The ocular penetration of oral sparfloxacin in humans

1994

The penetration of sparfloxacin into the aqueous humor after oral administration was studied in 28 patients undergoing cataract surgery. Each patient received a single, oral dose of 400 mg of sparfloxacin. In eight other patients scheduled to undergo vitreal surgery, multiple daily oral doses were administered for a total amount of 1,000 mg. The aqueous levels were (mean +/- SEM) 0.127 +/- 0.036 microgram/ml to 0.404 +/- 0.159 microgram/ml from two to 24 hours after ingestion. In the vitreous, the mean drug level was 0.840 microgram/ml (range, 0.480 to 2.060 microgram/ml), from 4.3 to 8.0 hours after the most recent oral dose. Blood samples obtained at the same time as vitreous and aqueous …

Sulcus implantation of a single-piece foldable acrylic intraocular lens after posterior capsular rupture in cataract surgery.

2012

Purpose. To evaluate the safety of a foldable acrylic single-piece intraocular lens (IOL) in cases of complicated cataract surgery and sulcus implantation. The setting was University and private anterior segment surgery practices. Methods. In this observational case series study, 13 eyes of 13 patients were included after complicated phacoemulsification with extensive posterior capsule rupture with or without vitreous loss. A foldable acrylic single-piece IOL (Rayner Superflex 620H; Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, Hove, East Sussex, UK) was implanted in the ciliary sulcus in each eye. Postoperative follow-up included best-corrected visual acuity, anterior segment biomicroscopy, IOL centr…

Pupil size differences between female and male patients after cataract surgery.

2022

Purpose To evaluate the changes in pupil diameter in women and men after cataract surgery. The correlation of pupillary changes with the variables age and anterior chamber depth will be analyzed. Methods The values of 109 randomized eyes who underwent cataract surgery were obtained and divided into two groups, 71 women and 38 men. Pupil diameter was measured preoperatively and 3-months postoperatively using the pupillometer software of the Topolyzer Vario (Wavelight Laser Technologie AG). Anterior chamber depth was obtained with Pentacam® (Oculus). Differences in pupillary diameters were investigated and correlations with age and anterior chamber depth were analyzed. Results For mesopic pup…

Contrast sensitivity after implantation of a spherical versus an aspherical intraocular lens in biaxial microincision cataract surgery.

2007

Purpose To determine whether implantation of a microincision intraocular lens (IOL) with a modified anterior surface, designed to compensate for the positive spherical aberration of the cornea in eyes of cataract patients, results in improved pseudophakic quality of vision in pseudophakic eyes after biaxial microincision phacoemulsification. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods In a nonrandomized parallel cohort investigation, the visual performance of 52 eyes of 52 patients unilaterally implanted with the aspherical Acri.Smart 36 A IOL (Acri.Tec) were compared with those of 25 eyes of 25 age-matched patients unilaterally implanted with…

Factors predicting normal visual acuity following anatomically successful macular hole surgery

2021

Purpose: To assess the incidence of normal vision following anatomically successful macular hole surgery and associated clinical variables. Methods: Multicentre, retrospective chart review. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records from seven European vitreoretinal units. Inclusion criteria were as follows: eyes undergoing primary vitrectomy for idiopathic full-thickness macular hole from January 2015 to January 2018; postoperative macular hole closure confirmed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT); preoperative pseudophakia or phakic eyes receiving combined cataract surgery; one-year follow-up. The primary o…

Determinants of inappropriate hospitalization in cataract surgery in the south of Italy: a retrospective study

2017

Purpose To analyze the frequency of inappropriate hospitalization in cataract surgery and the type of related determinants. Methods A nested retrospective case–control study was carried out on 2708 consecutive cataract surgery patients operated between January 2013 and Decem- ber 2015. All cases with inappropriate hospitalization (day surgery or ordinary hospitalization) were com- pared with a control group of cases treated in an appropriate (day service) regimen. The predictive value for inappropriate admissions to the hospital was assessed using a logistic regression model. Significant variables from the univariate analysis were included in a multivariate model. Results Forty-five cases (…

Prophylaxis of Pseudophakic Cystoid Macular Edema with Intraoperative Pegaptanib

2011

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of an intraoperative intravitreal pegaptanib injection during phacoemulsification in preventing the development of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (CME) following cataract surgery. This prospective, controlled pilot study was carried out at the Department of Ophthalmology, Nuevo Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe, Valencia (Spain). Five hundred patients with cataract and healthy retina were included in the study. Patients were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive an intraoperative intravitreal pegaptanib injection (n=250) or not (control group, n=250) associated with standardized phacoemulsification surgery and postoperative tr…

Toric intraocular lens versus opposite clear corneal incisions to correct astigmatism in eyes having cataract surgery.

2009

To compare toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with paired opposite clear corneal incisions (OCCIs) for astigmatism correction in patients having cataract surgery.Ophthalmology Service, Donostia Hospital, San Sebastián, Spain. This randomized prospective clinical study comprised eyes with more than 1.00 diopter (D) of preexisting corneal astigmatism. One group had AcrySof toric IOL implantation and the other, paired 2.75 mm/3.20 mm OCCIs in the steep axis with spherical IOL implantation. Uncorrected (UCVA) and best corrected (BCVA) visual acuity, refraction, corneal and total higher-order aberrations (HOAs), photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity, and toric IOL axis were measured 3 …

Implantation of a toric poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lens to correct high astigmatism

1999

Abstract A 57-year-old man experienced a decrease in visual function because of cataract formation. Corneal astigmatism was 13.4 diopters (D) because he had had a penetrating keratoplasty 27 years before. Cataract surgery was planned, and biometric data for toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were collected for the manufacture of a custom IOL. After phacoemulsification, a toric poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) IOL of +19.0 D spherical and +12.0 D cylindrical power was implanted via a sclerocorneal tunnel incision. Three months postoperatively, corneal astigmatism was 14.3 D and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), 20/25. Postoperative refraction (+1.5 −3.0 × 90) and BCVA remained stab…

Visual Acuity and Contrast Sensitivity in Eyes Implanted with Aspheric and Spherical Intraocular Lenses

2009

Purpose To compare visual acuity and contrast sensitivity (CS) in eyes implanted with aspheric and spherical intraocular lenses (IOLs) after cataract surgery. Design Randomized, prospective study. Participants Five hundred twenty-four eyes from 262 cataract surgery patients implanted with 2 IOL models: the AcrySof IQ (262 eyes) and AcrySof SN60AT (262 eyes; Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, TX). Methods High-contrast photopic best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA) and CS under photopic (85 cd/m 2 ) and mesopic (6 cd/m 2 ) conditions were measured. Pupil diameter was analyzed for distance vision under both lighting conditions. Follow-up was carried out for 6 months in all patients. Main …
