Abstract PHARC (Polyneuropathy, Hearing loss, Ataxia, Retinitis pigmentosa and Cataracts) (MIM# 612674 ) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by mutations in the ABHD12 gene. We evaluated two Spanish siblings affected with pes cavus, sensorimotor neuropathy, hearing loss, retinitis pigmentosa and juvenile cataracts in whom the genetic test of ABHD12 revealed a novel homozygous frameshift mutation, c.211_223del (p.Arg71Tyrfs*26). The earliest clinical manifestation in these patients was a demyelinating neuropathy manifested with a Charcot-Marie-Tooth phenotype over three decades. Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses to correct high myopia: A comparative study between Staar and Adatomed models

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of using posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (PIOLs) to treat high myopia, comparing two different models, Staar and Adatomed. METHODS: Twenty-four eyes from 12 patients were studied prospectively. A phakic Staar IOL was implanted in one eye of each patient, and the other eye received a phakic Adatomed IOL. Patients with uveitis or ocular trauma prior to ocular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, or capsular pseudoexfoliation were excluded. Combined procedure for glaucoma and cataract: A retrospective study

Abstract To ascertain the long-term effects of a triple procedure in the case of coexisting cataract and glaucoma, we did a retrospective study of 93 eyes that had cataract extraction, IOL implantation, and trabeculectomy within a ten-year period. Mean follow-up was 32.4 ± 21.9 months. Mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly lower than preoperatively, even though fewer medications were being used. One year after surgery, 60% of eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better with an average improvement of 3.8 Snellen lines. Background: The use of a viscoelastic substance facilitates cataract surgery. Healon 5 is a new viscoelastic product with special rheological properties. We evaluated the postoperative effect of Viscoat and Healon5 on intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell counts and laser flare.
