The influence of fire history, plant species and post-fire management on soil water repellency in a Mediterranean catchment : The Mount Carmel range,…

2017

Fire is a key factor impacting soil hydrology in many Mediterranean catchments. Soil water repellency (SWR) can stimulate land degradation processes by reducing the affinity of soil and water thereby triggering a reduction in soil fertility and increasing soil and water losses. The effects of two consequent fires (1989 and 2005) on SWR were assessed in the Carmel Mountains, Israel. Fire history, plant recovery and post-fire management (14 treatments) were investigated as determining factors in a time dependent system. In total 210 locations were investigated 9 times from October 2011 to February 2012, which totals 1890 water drop penetration tests that were performed. During each visit to t…

Assessment of the Pressure Level over Lentic Waterbodies through the Estimation of Land Uses in the Catchment and Hydro-Morphological Alterations: Th…

2021

The features of lentic waterbodies largely depend on the surrounding environment. Mediterranean coastal lagoons have been historically altered, with their catchment being highly modified for agricultural, livestock, or urban uses. Changes in land uses induce pressures that impact the waterbodies and alter their ecological status. The objectives of this paper were: to develop a methodological approach (LUPLES: Land Uses for estimating Pressure Levels to approach the Ecological Status), to quantify the main pressures on the waterbodies and to forecast the possible impacts of these pressures on their ecological status. Corine-Land Cover maps and Geographic Information System technics were used…

A GIS-Based Method to Assess the Pedestrian Accessibility to the Railway Stations

2018

Modern cities, affected by congestion, atmospheric and acoustic pollution, land consumption, should change and return to being on a human scale, rather than designed for cars. Proper land-use planning, infrastructure improvement and implementation of targeted interventions have to ensure that there is a rapprochement of citizens about the public transport, in order to reduce these problems. An important aspect of modal choice by users of the public transport system is, however, linked to the quality of the pedestrian routes. In fact, every journey made by public transport begins and finishes on foot. Therefore, studying pedestrian accessibility to transit stations and the walkability of the…

Analiza stanu świadomości zagrożenia zjawiskiem powodzi na obszarze zlewni rzeki Biała Głuchołaska

2016

Celem pracy było zbadanie poziomu świadomości dotyczącej powodzi wśród osób zamieszkujących zlewnię transgranicznej rzeki Biała Głuchołaska. Empiryczną analizę przeprowadzono za pomocą ankiety w grupie około 300 osób. Wśród ankietowanych wyróżniono sześć grup wiekowych. Respondenci udzielili odpowiedzi na 25 pytań. Ankieta stanowiła narzędzie do określenia poziomu wiedzy z zakresu zabezpieczeń przeciwpowodziowych, systemów ostrzegania, zachowania się w czasie powodzi i częstości jej występowania oraz strat, jakie ze sobą niesie, przygotowania służb reagowania do powodzi, ogólnego poziomu obawy przed powodzią, stopnia przygotowania ludności do wystąpienia powodzi oraz ochrony przeciwpowodzio…

Quantification of diffuse and concentrated pollutant loads at the watershed-scale: an Italian case study

2009

In this study, diffuse and point source pollutant loads were evaluated using an Italian case study: the Nocella catchment, which has been subject to extensive monitoring. The Nocella catchment is located in Sicily (Italy) and has an area of about 60 km2. The river receives wastewater and stormwater from two urban areas drained by combined sewers. The two sewer systems, two wastewater treatment plants and a river reach were monitored during both dry and wet weather periods. Thereafter, an integrated catchment-scale model was applied to simulate point pollutant sources, i.e., pollution coming from the urban drainage system, and nonpoint pollutant sources, i.e., pollution coming from agricultu…

Long-Range Ecogeomorphic Processes

2013

Processes operating at larger spatial scales interact with those operating at smaller scales (discussed in the previous chapter) to produce spatial patterns in drylands. Hydrological processes operating at the catchment scale, the effects of grazing, fire, water and wind erosion are considered separately and in relation to their interactions with propagules and plants. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the extent to which feedbacks are central to pattern formation.

The long-term use of psychiatric services within the Open Dialogue treatment system after first-episode psychosis

2017

AbstractOpen Dialogue is a family-oriented early intervention model for mental health problems developed in the health district of Western Lapland, Finland. In the present study, the aim was to describe how psychiatric services were used in Western Lapland after decades of first-episode psychosis services, and to analyze how baseline characteristics were related to re-admission rates and the total duration of psychiatric treatment in geographical area where Open Dialogue approaches were developed and efforts made to systematically apply them to all psychiatric treatments. The data were obtained from the medical histories of patients who had first-episode psychosis in 1992–2005 and who lived…

Flash-Floods Influence Macroinvertebrate Communities Distribution in Lotic Ecosystems

2019

Abstract Stream dwelling invertebrate populations are facing an ample array of stressors including the habitat imbalance caused by important floods. In this research we used a novel way to estimate the impact of floods upon the substrate, by utilising a remote variable named “flash-flood potential” (FFP), which accounts for the site slope and the average slope of the upstream catchment. The results showed that certain groups are sensitive to the influence of the FFP whereas other are not. We propose this remote variable as a surrogate for assessing stress imposed by floods and sediment scouring for lotic macroinvertebrates.

Exploring relationships between pixel size and accuracy for debris flow susceptibility models: a test in the Giampilieri catchment (Sicily, Italy).

2014

Debris flows are among the most hazardous phenomena in nature, which typically take the form of multiple-occurrence regional landslide events triggered by intense driving inputs such as storms or earthquakes. The main tasks of this study were to verify whether cell-based susceptibility models is capable of predicting debris flow initiations in the Giampilieri catchment (southern Italy) and to explore the relationships between the pixel size of the adopted mapping units in terms of predictive performances of the derived models. The Giampilieri catchment is a small area (10km 2 ) hit by a storm on the 1 st October 2009 which resulted in the triggering of more than one thousand landslides and …

Analyse cartographique de données pédologiques et hydrogéologiques appliquée à la gestion responsable de produits phytosanitaires

2014

BASF launched a Responsible Bentazone Management plan in 2011, in order to preserve water resources and sustain its bentazon based herbicide solutions. This molecule is commercialized by the company for several years and is found at concentrations above the standard for drinking water in about 1% of groundwater catchments in France. The action plan aims to reduce contamination situations with recommendations on the use of bentazone (dose, timing of application, restrictions on vulnerable soils on groundwater catchment areas) that complement the commercialization authorization. The study carried out during the internship focused on the diagnosis of a groundwater catchment area located in the…
