In a previous paper, it has been reported about the formation of catechol di-, tri- and tetramers within an oxidative polymerization catalyzed by synthetic water-soluble iron-porphyrin as an efficient alternative to bio-labile natural peroxidase. It has also been demonstrated the occurrence of both C-C and C-O-C coupling mechanisms. Bifunctional CA-PEG (catechol-poly(ethylene glycol)) and multifunctional CA-PEG-PGA/PEVGE (poly(glycidyl amine)/poly(ethylene glycol vinyl glycidyl ether)) ligands for the functionalization and solubilization of nanoparticles are introduced. Catechol Acetonide Glycidyl Ether (CAGE): A Functional Epoxide Monomer for Linear and Hyperbranched Multi-Catechol Functional Polyether Architectures

A protected catechol-containing epoxide monomer, catechol acetonide glycidyl ether (CAGE), is introduced. CAGE is conveniently obtained in three steps and enables the incorporation of surface-active catechol moieties into a broad variety of hydrophilic and biocompatible polyether architectures by copolymerization. Via acidic cleavage of the acetal protecting groups, the polymer-attached catechol functionalities are liberated and available for surface attachment or metal complexation. Multifunctional linear (CA-linPG) and hyperbranched polyglycerols (CA-hbPG) bearing a single catechol unit were synthesized by use of an acetonide-protected catechol initiator for the anionic polymerization of ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) and glycidol, respectively. A key feature for the synthesis of the hyperbranched structures was a selective, partial acetal deprotection step. Catechol ligands that bear carbonyl functions such as esters or aldehydes in the 3-position (1a–c-H2) form triple-stranded, helicate-type complexes [Li3(1a–c)6Ti2]– with titanium(IV) and the corresponding double-stranded compounds [Li2(1a–c)4B2] with boron(III) in hierarchical, lithium-templatedprocesses. The related 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands 2a,b-H can be used for the formation of similar complexes[Li3(2a,b)6M2]+ with cobalt(II), nickel(II), or zinc(II). Linking Electrostatic Effects and Protein Motions in Enzymatic Catalysis. A Theoretical Analysis of Catechol O-Methyltransferase

The role of protein motions in enzymatic catalysis is the subject of a hot scientific debate. We here propose the use of an explicit solvent coordinate to analyze the impact of environmental motions during the reaction process. The example analyzed here is the reaction catalyzed by catechol O-methyltransferase, a methyl transfer reaction from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) to the nucleophilic oxygen atom of catecholate. This reaction proceeds from a charged reactant to a neutral product, and then a large electrostatic coupling with the environment could be expected. The interactions of dopamine [2-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)ethylamine, (Dop−)] with cadmium(II), copper(II) and uranyl(VI) were studied in NaCl(aq) at different ionic strengths (0 ≤ I/mol dm−3 ≤ 1.0) and temperatures (288.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 318.15). From the elaboration of the experimental data, it was found that the speciation models are featured by species of different stoichiometry and stability. In particular for cadmium, the formation of only MLH, ML and ML2 (M = Cd2+; L = dopamine) species was obtained.
