Towards a General Definition of Modeling

What is a model? Surprisingly, in philosophical texts, this question is asked (sometimes), but almost never – answered. Instead of a general answer, usually, some classification of models is considered. The broadest possible definition of modeling could sound as follows: a model is anything that is (or could be) used, for some purpose, in place of something else. If the purpose is “answering questions”, then one has a cognitive model. Could such a broad definition be useful? Isn't it empty? Can one derive useful consequences from it? I'm trying to show that there is a lot of them.

Pētījuma mērķis bija novērtēt Engures ekoreģiona (Rīgas līča rietumu piekrastes) sedimentu kvalitāti, izmantojot sedimentu ekotoksicitātes testus. Lai noteiktu bioloģiskās atbildes reakcijas uz dažāda veida stresoriem, kā testorganismi pielietotas sānpeldes Monoporeia affinis and Pontogammarus robustoides, un izvēlēti biomarķieri (AChE, GST, GR, CAT, MT), kas noteikti gliemenēs Macoma balthica. Engures ekoreģionu varētu uzskatīt par nepiesārņotu rajonu, jo tā sedimentus raksturo salīdzinoši zemas smago metālu koncentrācijas. Engures ekoreģiona sedimentu ekotoksicitātes testu rezultāti neuzrādīja statistiski būtisku (>20% mirstība) toksisko efektu. Testorganismu izdzīvotība bija robežās no 8…

1596. g. Rīgā, Nikolausa Mollīna tipogrāfijā nodrukāta humānista Daniela Hermaņa (Daniel Hermann) poēma “De monstroso partu” (Par monstra dzimšanu). Autors precīzi attēlo Livonijā dzimušu bērnu ar iedzimtiem defektiem. Dzejnieks velk paralēles starp bērna deformētajiem orgāniem un valsts politisko un reliģisko stāvokli. Šis monstrs ir zīme jeb simbols Livonijai. Sabiedrībā šie monstri tiek uztverti kā laba vai ļauna zīme, kas pareģo nākotni vai brīdina. 16. gs. tie iegūst simbolisku nozīmi reliģiskās konfrontācijas. Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās glabājas unikāls eksponāts – sēņu mulāža, kas piederējusi Baltijas dabaspētniekam F. E. Štollam (1874 – 1966) un tikusi izmantota izglītības procesā. Iespējams, ka tā ir vienīgā Latvijā saglabājusies vēsturiskā sēņu mulāža.
