Sediment quality of the ecoregion Engure, Gulf of Riga, assessed by using ecotoxicity tests and biomarker responses

2014

Testorganismu izdzīvotība bija robežās no 8…

Late Pleistocene vertebrate - bearing deposits at San Teodoro Cave (North-Eastern Sicily): Preliminary data on faunal diversification and chronology

2008

Abstract This paper deals with the chronology and the possible correlations among levels of different excavated areas in the Pleistocene vertebrate-bearing deposits at the large San Teodoro Cave (North-Eastern Sicily). Two trenches have been excavated along the eastern side of the cave, located at a distance from the entrance, respectively, of 8 m ( α trench) and 28 m ( β trench) and at different depths. Lithological features, biometrical data from small mammals and ecological data from molluscs point to similar environmental conditions for the α trench deposits and those located along the eastern wall of the cave in the eastern part of the β trench. The same evidence, and the taphonomic fe…

Factor selection procedures in a Google Earthtm aided landslide susceptibility model: application to the Beiro river basin (Spain)

2011

A procedure to select the controlling factors connected to the slope instability has been defined. It allowed to assess the landslide susceptibility in the Rio Beiro basin (about 10 km2) over the north-eastern area of the city of Granada (Spain). Field and remote (Google EarthTM) recognition techniques allowed to generate a landslide inventory consisting in 127 phenomena. Univariate tests, using both association coefficients and validation results of single parameter susceptibility models, allowed to select among 15 controlling factors the ones that resulted as good predictor variables; these have been combined for unique conditions analysis and susceptibility maps were finally prepared. In…

In vitro comparative study on the friction of stainless steel wires with and without Orthospeed (JAL 90458) on an inclined plane

2016

Background: During the treatment of orthodontics, in the mechanics of slide, there takes place friction, which they reduce the slide of the arch across bracket. Therefore, clinical there takes place an increase of the time of treatment. There are different the technologies that try to reduce this friction, as the self-ligating braces. The purpose of this study was to research the in vitro behavior of JAL 90458 as a buffering agent which reduces friction between brackets and stainless steel arch wires of different cross sections and sizes. Material and Methods: Three types of stainless steel wires with different cross sections and three types of ligatures were used with and without JAL 90458…

Volcanic risk and the role of the media. A case study in the Etna area

2019

On December 24, 2018, the Etna volcano has recorded a significant eruption. Linked to this phenomenon, after a seismic swarm of 72 shocks, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck a large area North of Catania city, on the Eastern coast of Sicily. Six villages reported 28 injured people and damages to the building. According to seismologists the earthquake had an unusual level of magnitude. Yet, despite the real danger of this event, many people who live around the volcano, in one of the most densely populated areas of Sicily, perceived these facts in an ambivalent way. Indeed, their lives continued as before even in awareness of the natural hazard, while several media presented the situation as r…

Notes on Shore Flies (Diptera: Ephydridae) from Finland and north-western Russia

2015

The recent checklist of the Ephydridae of Finland by Zatwarnicki and Kahanpää (2014) mentioned 13 ephydrid species as new for Finland without further details. This paper presents detailed records for those species and a few other species of interest. Four species are recorded for the first time from Russia. Trimerina indistincta Krivosheina, 2004 is herein considered as a new junior synonym of Trimerina microchaeta Hendel, 1932, syn. nov.

The interactive effects of various nitrogen fertiliser formulations applied to urine patches on nitrous oxide emissions in grassland

2017

AbstractPasture-based livestock agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) nitrous oxide (N2O). Although a body of research is available on the effect of urine patch N or fertiliser N on N2O emissions, limited data is available on the effect of fertiliser N applied to patches of urinary N, which can cover up to a fifth of the yearly grazed area. This study investigated whether the sum of N2O emissions from urine and a range of N fertilisers, calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) or urea ± urease inhibitor ± nitrification inhibitor, applied alone (disaggregated and re-aggregated) approximated the N2O emission of urine and fertiliser N applied together (aggregated). Application of fertili…

MR3157399 Reviewed: Kesavan, S. Continuous functions that are nowhere differentiable. Math. Newsl. 24 (2013), no. 3, 49–52. (54C05)

2014

The author uses the Baire category theorem to prove the existence of nowhere differentiable functions in C([0,1]). Precisely, the author proves the following: Theorem 1. There exist continuous functions on the interval [0,1] which are nowhere differentiable. In fact, the collection of all such functions forms a dense subset of C([0,1]).
