Glossing wind names in Low German in Salisbury? A newly discovered text in London, British Library, Cotton Vitellius A.xii

It's an essay investigating a text on the names of the winds in ms London, British Library, Cotton Vitellius A.xii (s. xi), where both Latin and vernacular names are given. The text may ultimately derive from Einhard's Life of Charlemagne (ch. 29), but it appears as a self-contained text in the form of a Class Glossary. Although inserted in a manuscript copied in England at Salisbury, the vernacular words of the text are not in Old English. The essay makes a case for a possible connection with Flanders, with the text being one of the very rare surviving specimen of the Old Low Franconian language.

On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …
Una nuova acquisizione iconografica per la ricostruzione della tribuna di Antonello Gagini nella Cattedrale di Palermo

La recente digitalizzazione di un dipinto di anonimo siciliano nelle collezioni del Museo de Historia di Madrid e il suo inserimento nei database del patrimonio culturale spagnolo ed europeo ha consentito di riportare all’attenzione della comunità scientifica un’importante raffigurazione pittorica della tribuna di Antonello Gagini nella Cattedrale di Palermo. Dopo avere ripercorso le principali fonti documentarie ed iconografiche relative alla tribuna, viene qui presentata l’opera oggi a Madrid, che fornisce un prezioso riscontro alle fonti fin qui note.

Il progetto nasce dalla considerazione che l’attenzione scientifica verso la storia dell’architettura “normanna” di Sicilia si è focalizzata soprattutto sulle grandi architetture del periodo del Regno (1131-1196), ad esempio le cattedrali di Cefalù Palermo e Monreale, intese come la trasposizione materiale del sincretismo culturale che caratterizzava la società multietnica siciliana del secolo XII. In realtà questo sincretismo è però il punto d’arrivo di un percorso iniziato durante il periodo della Contea (1061-1131), grazie all’azione politica del Gran Conte di Ruggero I d’Altavilla. In Sicily the first service of active protection of monuments was experimented with a law of Ferdinand IV Borbone, who named the princes of Biscari and Torremuzza ‘royal guardians’ and Carlo Chenchi ‘architect of antiquities’. In that period, the temple of Segesta was restored, which had been damaged by lightning in 1726 which struck the eastern façade and a column was built with different stones which, a few years later, was declared too distinguishable. The Agrigento Cathedral was built about nine centuries ago on the edge of a steep slope made up of alternating inclined layers of soft calcarenites and fine-grained soils; its behaviour has never been satisfactory especially as far as the North aisle is concerned. Many corrective measures have been attempted during its lifespan and also a few years ago. They proved invariably unsuccessful.
