Remembering a past princess : Catherine Jagiellon and the construction of national narratives in Sweden and Finland

2019

This chapter tackles the role a Jagiellonian princess, Catherine Jagiellon, has been given in Swedish and Finnish history culture. It illustrates how her figure has entered the historical-cultural memory of both countries, forging and re-forging their national self-image from the end of the sixteenth century through the Cold War, and into contemporary school history teaching. The chapter highlights the differences as well as the similarities of collective memory and history culture associated with Catherine Jagiellon in two Nordic countries with a shared history. It focuses on largely on physical sites of memory such as archives, museums, cathedrals, chapels, castles, commemorative monument…

2019

Performance art (like Orlan’s “Carnal Art”) involves artist body in the performance itself and it is based on a clear phenomenological assumption: we “do not have” a body, but we “are” our body, we are our “sculpture”. Fascinated by the enigmas of change, Aesthetics has sought to address the metaphysical question concerning metamorphosis and the problem of identity persistence in change; the solution has been found for centuries in the opposition between essence and appearance: as highlighted by fantastic literature (Ovid, Apuleius, Kafka), in metamorphosis the “substance” remains unchanged and only appearance (or accident) changes. However, the reflection carried out by Catherine Malabou o…

Antoniego Zabłockiego relacja o pobycie Katarzyny II i Józefa II w Chersoniu i na Krymie w roku 1787

2022

From July 1784 to mid-1792, a Polish trade and diplomatic post operated in Kherson (until the spring of 1788), and then in Mirgorod, in the Black Sea territories of the Russian Empire. From mid-1784 until the end of 1791, Antoni Zabłocki, a former soldier of the Crown Army, the Bar Confederate, and an exile in Russia, was the head of the facility, and from the summer-autumn 1786, the consul. He did not have any diplomatic preparation, and his qualifications were limited to the knowledge of the Russian language and the realities of social and economic life in the tsarist state, as well as to close contacts with the surroundings of King Stanisław August. This secured him a job as a royal agen…
