Implant-supported metal-ceramic and resin-modified ceramic crowns: A 5-year prospective clinical study.
2018
Abstract Statement of problem Because of market demand for innovation, new restoration materials have been introduced without adequate testing; clinical failure may be the consequence, and clinical studies are needed. Purpose The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the biological and mechanical clinical behavior of implant-supported resin-modified ceramic crowns compared with that of metal-ceramic crowns. Material and methods Forty-two participants aged between 35 and 65 years received single implants in posterior edentulous sites. After the osseointegration period, half of the implants (selected randomly) (n=25) were restored with metal-ceramic crowns (MC group) and the other ha…

The superior effect of nature based solutions in land management for enhancing ecosystem services
2017
The rehabilitation and restoration of land is a key strategy to recover services -goods and resources- ecosystems offer to the humankind. This paper reviews key examples to understand the superior effect of nature based solutions to enhance the sustainabilit y of catchment systems by promoting desirable soil and landscape functions. The use of concepts such as connectivity and the theory of system thinking framework allowed to review coastal and river management as a guide to evaluate other strategies to achieve sustainability. In land management NBSs are not mainstream management. Through a set of case studies: organic farming in Spain; rewilding in Slovenia; land restoration in Iceland, s…

Influence of bruxism on survival of porcelain laminate veneers
2013
Objectives: This study aims to determine whether bruxism and the use of occlusal splints affect the survival of porcelain laminate veneers in patients treated with this technique. Material and Methods: Restorations were made in 70 patients, including 30 patients with some type of parafunc - tional habit. A total of 323 veneers were placed, 170 in patients with bruxism activity, and the remaining 153 in patients without it. A clinical examination determined the presence or absence of ceramic failure (cracks, frac - tures and debonding) of the restorations; these incidents were analyzed for association with bruxism and the use of splints. Results: Analysis of the ceramic failures showed that …
A prospective evaluation of zirconia anterior partial fixed dental prostheses: Clinical results after seven years.
2014
Abstract Statement of problem Because of the high mechanical strength of zirconium dioxide, the metal in fixed partial prostheses can now be replaced. However, the material is susceptible to aging or hydrothermal degradation and to chipping of the feldspathic veneer. Purpose The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the survival (without failure) and success (survival without any complication or failure) rate and clinical efficacy of anterior zirconia partial fixed dental prostheses. Material and methods Twenty-seven anterior partial fixed dental prostheses of 3 to 6 units were fabricated. All participants were examined after 1 month and 6 months, then annually for 7 years. Resu…
Survival rates of a lithium disilicate-based core ceramic for three-unit esthetic fixed partial dentures: a 10-year prospective study.
2013
Purpose The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and long-term survival rate of three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made from lithium disilicate-based core ceramic. Materials and methods Twenty-one three-unit FPDs were placed in 19 patients to replace single lost teeth in the esthetic area, following a study protocol that took clinical, esthetic, and radiologic aspects into consideration. Each case was reviewed at 1 week following placement, at 6 months, and then annually for 10 years. Statistical analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results Out of the 19 patients, 14.3% presented reversible postoperative sensitivity. Recession was…
In vitro retentive strength of zirconium oxide ceramic crowns using different luting agents
2005
Statement of problem In contrast to gold crowns, in vitro determination of the retentive strength of all-ceramic crowns is more difficult because components allowing connection to testing apparatus are not as easily integrated into the all-ceramic material. Nevertheless, retentive strength data are crucial for obtaining information about the potential clinical performance of luting cements for all-ceramic restorations. Therefore, a new in vitro model was necessary to evaluate the retentive strength of all-ceramic crowns. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the retentive strength of 4 resin-cement systems, a compomer, a glass-ionomer cement, a resin-modified glass-ion…
Luting of ceramic crowns with a self-adhesive cement: Effect of contamination on marginal adaptation and fracture strength
2012
Objectives: This study evaluated the percentages of continuous margins (%CM) and fracture strength (FS) of crowns made out from blocs of leucite-reinforced ceramic (IPS Empress CAD) and luted with a representative self-adhesive cement (RelyX Unicem) under four contaminating agents: saliva, water, blood, a haemostatic solution containing aluminium chloride (pH= 0.8) and a control group with no contamination. Study Design: %CM at both tooth-cement (TC) and cement-crown (CC) interfaces were determined before and after a fatigue test consisting of 600’000 chewing loads and 1’500 temperature cycles changing from 5º C to 50º C. Load to fracture was recorded on fatigued specimens. Kruskal-Wallis t…
Choice of ceramic for use in treatments with porcelain laminate veneers.
2006
