Frequencies of pseudocholinesterase variants in Icelanders, Greeks and Pakistanis.

1968

THE formation of the human pseudocholinesterase variants is controlled by at least four alleles at one autosomal locus termed E1 (ref. 1). The four alleles are , , and (refs. 2–5). The heterozygotes have been found in remarkably uniform frequencies, about 3 to 6 per cent, in Caucasians from Europe and North America3,8–11, and also in Australian aborigines12 and Mexican Indians13, but are relatively rare among Negroes11 and Mongoloids10,11,14.

Birth Size and Brain Function 75 Years Later

2014

BACKGROUND: There are several lines of evidence pointing to fetal and other early origins of diseases of the aging brain, but there are no data directly addressing the hypotheses in an older population. We investigated the association of fetal size to late-age measures of brain structure and function in a large cohort of older men and women and explored the modifying effect of education on these associations. METHODS: Within the AGES (Age Gene/Environment Susceptibility)-Reykjavik population-based cohort (born between 1907 and 1935), archived birth records were abstracted for 1254 men and women who ∼75 years later underwent an examination that included brain MRI and extensive cognitive ass…

Matilde Ucelay Maortua. Single-family house for Vincente Sebastian Llegat

2016

Between 1931 and 1936, the Second Republic in Spain was proclaimed. A social and political model consolidated as one of the most prolific according the artistic point of view. The new democratic regime brought many basic rights for women as the chance to complete their university studies. An emblematic figure of the cultural and architectural revolution of Spain was Matilde Ucelay Maortua. The project here analyzed is the house of Vicente Sebastián Llegat in Pradolargo-Pozuelo de Alarcón, of 1968. Matilde Ucelay designed a building with two levels, a large garden, a swimming pool and the outside porch marking the environment of the L-structure of the house. The critical redrawing of the Uce…

History of bioavailable lead and iron in the Greater North Sea and Iceland during the last millennium – A bivalve sclerochronological reconstruction

2014

We present the first annually resolved record of biologically available Pb and Fe in the Greater North Sea and Iceland during 1040-2004 AD based on shells of the long-lived marine bivalve Arctica islandica. The iron content in pre-industrial shells from the North Sea largely remained below the detection limit. Only since 1830, shell Fe levels rose gradually reflecting the combined effect of increased terrestrial runoff of iron-bearing sediments and eutrophication. Although the lead gasoline peak of the 20th century was well recorded by the shells, bivalves that lived during the medieval heyday of metallurgy showed four-fold higher shell Pb levels than modern specimens. Presumably, pre-indus…

Hacer películas chilenas desde Francia: Marcela Said y Jairo Boisier

2018

Severe tetracycline dental discoloration: Restoration with conventional feldspathic ceramic veneers. A clinical report

2017

The treatment of severe tetracycline discoloration is a challenge for the dentist. There are several treatment options and one of the most effective is the use of feldspathic veneers. The aim of this clinical case was to carry out the replacement with conventional feldspathic ceramic veneers on a patient with highly stained teeth (grade IV tetracycline) by a minimally invasive approach. Clinical examination revealed gingival retraction, color change of the veneers, ceramic cracked of 1.1 and 1.3 and incisal wear in lower anterior teeth. The decision was to retreat with feldspathic ceramic veneers from 1.6 to 2.6. Premolars and first molars were included because its dark color intensifies th…

Coronary artery calcium and physical performance as determinants of mortality in older age: The AGES-Reykjavik Study

2013

Background. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) and physical performance have been shown to be associated with mortality, but it is not clear whether one of them modifies the association. We investigated the association between the extent of CAC and physical performance among older individuals and explored these individual and combined effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and non-CVD mortality. Methods. We studied 4074 participants of the AGES–Reykjavik Study who were free from coronary heart disease, had a CAC score calculated from computed tomography scans and had data on mobility limitations and gait speed at baseline in 2002–2006 at a mean age of 76 years. Register-based mortalit…

A blunted diurnal cortisol response in the lower educated does not explain educational differences in coronary heart disease: Findings from the AGES-…

2015

Lower educational attainment generally is a strong predictor of coronary heart disease (CHD). The underlying mechanisms of this effect are, however, less clear. One hypothesis is that stress related to limitations imposed by lower socioeconomic status elicits changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functioning, which, in turn, increases risk of CHD. In a large cohort study, we examined whether educational attainment was related to risk of fatal and non-fatal CHD and the extent to which salivary cortisol mediated this relation independent of potential confounders, including lifestyles. Data came from 3723 participants aged 66 through 96 from the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility (A…
