Background: Carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the testis is considered to be a precancerous germinal cell lesion, but the precise cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying transformation of CIS into invasive pluripotent cancer cells remain to be elucidated. Background: The study of the expression of different biological markers in non-neoplastic, pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of prostate could help to better understand their role in carcinogenesis and to find new diagnostic and prognostic tools. Materials and Methods: In the present work we evaluated, by immunohistochemistry, the presence and the expression of PCNA, p53, HSP60, HSP10 and MUC-2 in a series of nodular hyperplasia, low- and high-grade prostatic intraepithelial lesions and adenocarcinomas. Lactate: mirror and motor of tumor malignancy

A number of studies have shown that malignant transformation is associated with an increase in glycolytic flux and in anaerobic and aerobic cellular lactate excretion. Using quantitative bioluminescence imaging in various primary carcinomas in patients (uterine cervix, head and neck, colorectal region) at first diagnosis of the disease, we showed that lactate concentrations in tumors in vivo can be relatively low or extremely high (up to 40 micromol/g) in different individual tumors or within the same lesion. Regulation of cell-to-cell communication in non-tumorigenic and malignant human prostate epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND Gap-junction-mediated intercellular communication (GJIC) is required for normal development and tissue homeostasis. However, the role of GJIC in human prostate carcinogenesis and progression remains ill-defined. METHODS The ability of hormones, anti-hormones, and the anti-hypertensive drug, forskolin, to restore GJIC in non-tumorigenic (RWPE-1 and PWR-1E) and malignant (RWPE-2, LNCaP, DU-145) human prostate epithelial cell lines, was examined by Scrape-Loading/Dye Transfer (SL/DT) and Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP) methods using an Ultima laser cytometer. Essential thrombocythemia terminating in pure erythroleukemia

Transformation into acute leukemia is a rare event in essential thrombocythemia (ET). The blasts are usually of myeloid, rarely of megakaryoblastic differentiation. We present the case of a patient with pure erythroleukemia after a nearly 10-year course of ET, which was treated with hydroxyurea. The patient, a 58-year-old male, presented with an elevated thrombocyte count (926,000/μL) and normal values of hemoglobin and leukocytes. After 10 years of therapy with hydroxyurea, the patient developed acute leukemia of solely erythroid differentiation. Chemotherapy with cytarabine and daunorubicin resulted in incomplete remission. Modulation of accessory cell function of immortalized bone marrow-derived macrophages by granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor.

To generate cloned macrophage populations with sensitivity towards granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMM phi) were immortalized by transformation with SV40. A panel of transformed clones was established. The majority of clones represented independently derived transformants, as evidenced by restriction fragment length polymorphism using genomic DNA digested with EcoRI and TaqI and the 5.2 kb SV40 DNA for hybridization analysis.
