Quantitative corneal anatomy: evaluation of the effect of diabetes duration on the endothelial cell density and corneal thickness.

2014

Purpose To evaluate the differences in endothelial cell density (ECD) and central corneal thickness (CCT) between type II diabetic patients and age-matched healthy controls, and determine the impact of time from diagnosis. Methods This is a comparative study of 77 eyes of type II diabetic patients (33 males, 44 females) and 80 eyes of healthy subjects (42 males, and 38 females) whose ages ranged from 38 to 56 years. CCT, ECD, HbA1c levels, and Goldmann tonometry were measured. Results The CCT was significantly higher and the ECD significantly lower in long-term diabetic patients (10 years + since diagnosis) when compared with short-term diabetic patients (<1 year since diagnosis) and contro…

Evaluation of the Fermentation Dynamics of Commercial Baker’s Yeast in Presence of Pistachio Powder to Produce Lysine-Enriched Breads

2019

The present work was carried out to evaluate the microbiological, physicochemical, and sensory characteristics of fortified pistachio breads. Pistachio powder (5% w/w) was added to flour or semolina and fermented by a commercial baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Pistachio powder did not influence the biological leavening of the doughs. The kinetics of pH and total titratable acidity (TTA) during dough fermentation showed that the leavening process occurred similarly for all trials. The concentration of yeasts increased during fermentation and reached levels of 108 CFU/g after 2 h. Pistachio powder decreased the height and softness of the final breads and increased cell density…

FACTORS AFFECTING CHINESE HAMSTER OVARY CELL PROLIFERATION AND VIABILITY

2019

Advantageous cultivation procedures for the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are necessary for the productive commercial production of biopharmaceuticals. A main challenge that needs to be addressed during the process development is the differences in each cell line requirements concerning the nutrients and feed strategies in order to achieve the desired growth characteristics. Therefore, within the current research, a naïve high cell density serum free suspension adapted CHO cell line was tested with glucose and glutamine rich feeds in fed-batch Erlenmeyer shake flask cultures. Glucose consumption rate was adjusted to develop the optimal feed strategies. Obtained results indicated that hi…

Postoperative Repositioning of Inverted Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty Grafts

2019

Item does not contain fulltext PURPOSE: To present 4 cases of postoperative repositioning of inverted grafts after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). METHODS: Retrospective case reports of 4 patients presenting with subtotal to total graft detachment after DMEK, most probably owing to upside-down graft positioning. Graft repositioning was performed 1 to 14 days after initial DMEK surgery. In 3 cases (cases 1, 3, and 4), repositioning was performed without removing the graft from the anterior chamber (AC), whereas for case 2, the graft had to be removed from the AC to attain correct graft orientation. RESULTS: In all 4 cases, the initially upside-down DMEK grafts could be suc…

Immobilized glycolipids from human diploid fibroblasts inhibit DNA synthesis of cultured human fibroblasts*1

1987

Several previous studies have shown that glycolipids isolated from plasma membranes of cultured cells and added to cells in culture inhibit the growth rate in a concentration-dependent fashion. In order to investigate the possible involvement of glycolipids in the growth regulation of normal cells by cell-cell contacts, we tested the effect of immobilized glycolipids, isolated from human fibroblasts, on the DNA synthesis of freshly seeded fibroblasts. Gangliosides inhibited DNA synthesis to a great extent, whereas neutral glycolipids had only a minor effect. The degree of inhibition of DNA synthesis by immobilized gangliosides depended both on the cell density of the cultures from which the…

Posterior‐chamber phakic implantable collamer lenses with a central port: a review

2020

Abstract We aimed to summarize the outcomes reported following the implantation of the V4c implantable collamer lens with a central port (ICL, STAAR Surgical Inc) for myopia correction. A literature search in PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus was carried out to identify publications reporting clinical outcomes of patients who were implanted with the V4c ICL model and had a follow‐up period of at least 6 months. A total of 35 clinical studies published between 2012 and 2020 were included in the present review. A comprehensive analysis of the available data was performed, focusing on visual and refractive outcomes at different time‐points post‐surgery. In addition, adverse events and other pa…

Boosting Ethanol Productivity of Zymomonas mobilis 8b in Enzymatic Hydrolysate of Dilute Acid and Ammonia Pretreated Corn Stover Through Medium Optim…

2019

The presence of toxic degradation products in lignocellulosic hydrolysate typically reduced fermentation rates and xylose consumption rate, resulting in a decreased ethanol productivity. In the present study, Zymomonas mobilis 8b was investigated for high cell density fermentation with cell recycling to improve the ethanol productivity in lignocellulosic hydrolysate. The fermentation performances of Z. mobilis 8b at various conditions were first studied in yeast extract-tryptone medium. It was found that nutrient level was essential for glucose and xylose co-fermentation by Z. mobilis 8b and high cell density fermentation with cell recycling worked well in yeast extract-tryptone medium for …

Biofiltration of toluene in the absence and the presence of ethyl acetate under continuous and intermittent loading

2008

BACKGROUND: Two peat biofilters were used for the removal of toluene from air for one year. One biofilter was fed with pure toluene and the other received 1:1 (by weight) ethyl acetate:toluene mixture. RESULTS: The biofilters were operated under continuous loading: the toluene inlet load (IL) at which 80% removal occurred was 116 g m−3 h−1 at 57 s gas residence time. Maximum elimination capacity of 360 g m−3 h−1 was obtained at an IL of 745 g m−3 h−1. The elimination of toluene was inhibited by the presence of ethyl acetate. Intermittent loading, with pollutants supplied for 16 h/day, 5 days/week, did not significantly affect the removal efficiency (RE). Biomass was fully activated in 2 h a…

Manganese-dependent growth of Oenococci

2005

Abstract Oenococci are usually grown in complex media supplemented with tomato juice. The manganese concentration of tomato juice is about 10 µM, which shows a growth-stimulating effect. Unexpectedly, we found that high concentrations of manganese (34 mM) could replace tomato juice. At this concentration, far exceeding the concentration in growth media, several Oenococcus oeni strains yielded the same cell density as in the presence of tomato juice. The observed significant differences in the manganese dependence should also have an impact on the growth of oenococci in must and wine, where they are used as starter cultures for the removal of malic acid.

Evidence of autoinduction heterogeneity via expression of the agr system of listeria monocytogenes at the single-cell level

2011

ABSTRACT To investigate if the primary function of the Agr system of Listeria monocytogenes is to monitor cell density, we followed Agr expression in batch cultures, in which the autoinducer concentration was uniform, and in biofilms. Expression was heterogeneous, suggesting that the primary function of Agr is not to monitor population density.
