Modulation of haem oxygenase-1 expression by nitric oxide and leukotrienes in zymosan-activated macrophages

Phagocytosis of unopsonized zymosan by RAW 264.7 macrophages upregulated protein expression of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. In the presence of zymosan, exogenous prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) did not exert significant effects on the expression of these three enzymes. In contrast, exogenous leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) and LTC(4) in the nanomolar range inhibited HO-1 and iNOS expression, as well as nitrite accumulation. Confinement stress in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) depresses peritoneal leukocyte cytotoxicity

Fish respond to stressful conditions via neuroendocrine responses (primary response) which result in increased levels of plasma cortisol which is considered immunosuppressive. Sea bass were confined at low (10 kg/m3) and high (60 kg/m3) density for 3-48 h. Plasma cortisol and glucose were evaluated and two principal cellular immune responses were assayed. A significant increase in plasma cortisol and glucose levels, as well as osmolarity, was found following stress. The level of expression of secondary sexual characters has been suggested to signal male ability to resist parasitic infestations. To test this idea, several studies have examined the link between sexual signals and immunocompetence in birds. However, most of them have used only a single aspect of immune response to evaluate immunocompetence. Abstract Ageing is associated with declines in many physiological parameters, including multiple immune system functions. The rate of acceleration of the frequency of death due to cardiovascular disease or cancer seems to increase with age from middle age up to around 80 years, plateauing thereafter. By causing experimental lesions of dermatophytosis in rabbits inoculated and reinoculated with T. mentagrophytes var. granulosum and T. rubrum a study was carried out of the state of cellular immunity response, during infection, and also of the antigens responsible for the sensitization. Children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) operations have an increased risk of developing severe infections. Impairment of the immune system may contribute to the development of sequelae such as capillary leaks, pulmonary dysfunction and auto-immune reactions. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of cardiac surgery with CPB on the immune system of infants and young children.
