Patient education in physiotherapy in total hip arthroplasty (THA) - The perspective of physiotherapists

2018

Background and Purpose There is limited knowledge about patients’ and physiotherapists’ perceptions of patient education in physiotherapy in hip arthroplasty. The aim of this study was to describe physiotherapists’ conceptions of the patient education in physiotherapy needed by patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Methods The data for this qualitative study were collected using group and individual semi-structured interviews. Seven physiotherapists were interviewed. The research data were analyzed using a phenomenographic method. Results Three categories of patient education in physiotherapy in hip arthroplasty were produced and the categories formed a hierarchy. The narrowest descri…

T2-mapping of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 Tesla: a feasibility and reproducibility study

2018

Objective: To evaluate the reproducibility of T2 relaxation time measurements of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 T. Materials and methods: Healthy volunteers underwent an oblique axial multislice multiecho spin-echo sequence of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 T. Regions of interest were manually drawn using a dedicated software by two musculoskeletal radiologists to include the cartilaginous part of the sacroiliac joints. A senior radiologist performed the measurement twice, while a resident measured once. Intra- and inter-observer reproducibility was tested using the Bland-Altman method. Association between sex and T2 relaxation times was tested using the Mann-Whitney U test. Correlation between…

Mid- to Long-Term Outcome of Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty in Younger Patients

2010

Purpose. To assess mid- to long-term outcomes of cementless primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) in younger patients. Methods. Records of 28 women and 34 men (75 hips) aged 18 to 55 (mean, 38) years who underwent primary THA using a hydroxyapatite-coated stem and a threaded cup and had been followed up for a mean of 10 (6–15) years were reviewed. 13 of the patients had bilateral THAs. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated. Results. After a minimum follow-up of 7 (range, 7–14) years, 12 (16%) of the hips were revised, of which 8 (11%) were for the cup. The causes for revision were late deep infections (n=2), aseptic loosening of the cup (n=4), and polyethylene wear (n=6). No stem…

On orienting the hand to reach and grasp an object.

1996

Subjects were required to reach and grasp a parallelepiped, the position, orientation and size of which were varied. The kinematics of reaching and grasping movements was studied in full vision and in no vision conditions. Both direction and movement amplitude of reaching were affected by object orientation. Conversely, both the time course of finger axis orientation and the angular displacement of the hand at wrist were influenced by object position. These results were not modified by the absence of visual control. Finger aperture during grasping was affected by both object size and orientation. This latter result was not due to a distorted size perception, as shown by a control matching e…

Effect of self-etching primer/adhesive and conventional bonding on the shear bond strength in metallic and ceramic brackets

2011

Introduction: Bracket debonding from the tooth surface is a common problem in fixed orthodontics. The aims of the present study were to assess the bond strength and failure sites in two ways of bonding technique, with metallic and ceramic brackets. Material and Methods: One hundred premolars were assigned to 4 groups of 25 each: Group A, metallic brackets/ conventional procedure; Group B, metallic brackets/Transbond XT; Group C, ceramic brackets/conventional procedure; and Group D, ceramic brackets/Transbond XT. Transbond XT composite paste was used for bracket bonding and cured by conventional light-cure device. Specimens were subjected to thermocycling. One week after bonding shearing for…

Effect of continuous oestradiol-medroxyprogesterone administration on plasma lipids and lipoproteins

1991

Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 21 post-menopausal women after 4 and 8 months of continuous treatment with an orally administered combination of oestradiol and medroxyprogesterone acetate. The mean concentrations of cholesterol and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were reduced by 12% (P less than 0.001) and 11% (P less than 0.01), respectively, after 4 months of treatment and by 9% (P less than 0.05) and 12% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months. The mean level of high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol showed an initial fall of 5% (P less than 0.05) after 4 months and then increased by 13% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months of treatment. The plasma triglycerides leve…

Effect of a web-based positive psychology intervention on prenatal well-being: A case series study

2018

Abstract Background Detrimental effects of women’s negative feelings during pregnancy have been extensively examined and documented, but research on the influence of positive feelings and protective factors on their prenatal mental health is scarce. Evidence from the positive psychology field has shown that practicing some brief positive exercises, called positive psychology interventions, can maximize well-being by increasing positive emotions, engagement, and meaning. Aim The aim of this study is to examine the effect of a positive psychology web-based intervention on indices of women’s prenatal well-being. Methods Specifically, a case series design was adopted, and data from six women ar…

The role of osteonectin in human tooth development: An immunohistological study

1992

We investigated immunohistologically 160 teeth and dental germs in various stages of tooth development taken from human individuals (13th week of pregnancy to the 24th year of life) to study the osteonectin expression in dental hard tissue. In the course of dentinogenesis, the predentin, the odontoblasts, and their cell processes show a positive osteonectin staining reaction. During cementogenesis, osteonectin is synthesized by cement-producing fibroblasts, cementoblasts, and cementocytes. The expression of osteonectin during dentinogenesis and cementogenesis is closely related to the development of the respective calcified tissue. All cells of the inner and outer enamel epithelium, the cel…

Idursulfase treatment of Hunter syndrome in children younger than 6 years: results from the Hunter Outcome Survey.

2011

Purpose: To use the Hunter Outcome Survey, an international database, to assess the safety and effectiveness of enzyme replacement therapy with idursulfase in patients with Hunter syndrome who started treatment before 6 years of age. Methods: The study population included all patients enrolled in the Hunter Outcome Survey who started idursulfase infusions (0.5 mg/kg every other week) before 6 years of age and who had at least one follow-up examination recorded. Results: The study population included 124 patients, younger than 6 years, who had a mean age at start of idursulfase of 3.6 ± 1.6 years (mean ± SD). The mean duration of treatment was 22.9 ± 14.6 months. A total of 69 infusion-relat…
