Chryseobacterium indologenes bacteraemia in a diabetic child

2005

Chryseobacterium indologenes is a non-fermentative Gram-negative bacillus that is a rare pathogen in humans. Its occurrence in diabetic children has not been previously reported. In this report, a case is described of C. indologenes bacteraemia possibly associated with the use of a peripheral venous catheter. A 2-year-old boy with type I diabetes mellitus was admitted due to a coma caused by cerebral oedema and was successfully treated for his neurological condition but presented on the tenth day after admission with fever of 40 degrees C, agitation, restlessness, lack of appetite, somnolence and fatigue. His pulse rate was 90 min(-1) and his respiratory rate was 20 min(-1). Laboratory stud…

Problem-based learning for anesthesia resident operating room crisis management training.

2018

Background Senior anesthesia residents must acquire competency in crisis management for operating room (OR) emergencies. We conducted problem based learning (PBL) OR emergency scenarios for anesthesia residents, focused on emergencies in ‘Airway’, ‘Circulation’, ‘Central venous catheter’, and ‘Pain management complications’. Non-technical skills are an integral component of team-based OR emergency management. Methods Prior to integrated OR emergency clinical and non-technical skills PBL training, participating 35 anesthesia residents completed two 5-point scale surveys regarding frequency of emergency experiences in the operating room, and self-confidence for anesthesia-related crisis manag…

Effect of a surveillance system for decreasing neonatal nosocomial infections.

2018

Nosocomial infection in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants is a common complication with high morbimortality. New strategies to reduce its occurrence have recently led to the development of neonatal surveillance programs. To determine whether the NeoKissEs surveillance system implementation in our neonatal unit has been associated with a decrease in nosocomial infection in VLBW infants, as well as a reduction in the use of antibiotics and central venous catheters (CVC).Retrospective and descriptive study of infants1500 g admitted between January 2011 and December 2017. Rates of use of antibiotics and CVC were calculated, as well as late-onset sepsis incidence. Data were compared before and …

Bernard-Horner Syndrome after accidental lesion of carotid artery: case report

2012

Among the complications of internal jugular vein insertion there is the lesion of the cervical sympathetic trunk with the onset of Bernard-Horner syndrome, consisting of miosis, eyelid ptosis, enophthalmos and anhidrosis on the same side of the lesion. The neurological damage can be caused by the direct puncture of the trunk or by the irritating and compressive action of a hematoma during the puncture of the internal jugular; the clinical picture, when reversible, resolves in a few months. The case we report is about the onset of the syndrome after accidental puncture of carotid artery, followed by the total disappearance of signs in a few days.

Bedside surgery in the newborn infants: Survey of the Italian society of pediatric surgery

2020

Abstract Introduction This is the report of the first official survey from the Italian Society of Pediatric Surgery (ISPS) to appraise the distribution and organization of bedside surgery in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in Italy. Methods A questionnaire requesting general data, staff data and workload data of the centers was developed and sent by means of an online cloud-based software instrument to all Italian pediatric surgery Units. Results The survey was answered by 34 (65%) out of 52 centers. NICU bedside surgery is reported in 81.8% of the pediatric surgery centers. A lower prevalence of bedside surgical practice in the NICU was reported for Southern Italy and the islands …

Fundamental Research in Oncology and Thrombosis 2 (FRONTLINE 2): A Follow‐Up Survey

2020

Abstract Background Fundamental Research in Oncology and Thrombosis (FRONTLINE) is a global survey of physicians' perceptions and practice in the management of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with cancer. Materials and Methods The present survey, FRONTLINE 2, follows the original FRONTLINE survey (published in The Oncologist in 2003) and provides insights into how physicians perceive risk of VTE in cancer and approach its prophylaxis and treatment. Results Between November 2015 and February 2016, 5,233 respondents participated, representing cancer physicians and surgeons. Most believed that less than one in five patients with any cancer might be at risk of VTE, with a slightly high…

State-of-the-Art Review : Chemotherapy and Thrombosis in Gynecologic Malignancy

1999

Thromboembolism is a severe and frequent problem in gynecologic malignancy. The average DVT incidence during chemotherapy of 5% might represent the lower range of incidence because < 55% of thrombotic complication manifest clinical signs. However, it seems likely that in addition to chemotherapy other risk factors such as menopausal status, BMI of patients, or type of preceding surgery must coincide before thrombosis manifests. While monitoring of patients using sophisticated coagulation tests did not identify patients' risk for DVT during chemotherapy, an evaluation of the coagulation status before initiating chemotherapy is recommended. Patients with a venous access device (e.g., indwelli…

Heparin versus 0.9% sodium chloride intermittent flushing for prevention of occlusion in central venous catheters in adults

2014

Background Heparin intermittent flushing is a standard practice in the maintenance of patency in central venous catheters. However, we could find no systematic review examining its effectiveness and safety. Objectives To assess the effectiveness of intermittent flushing with heparin versus 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline) solution in adults with central venous catheters in terms of prevention of occlusion and overall benefits versus harms. Search methods The Cochrane Peripheral Vascular Diseases Group Trials Search Co-ordinator searched the Specialised Register (last searched December 2013) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (2013, Issue 11). Implementering av PICC-line – en kvalitativ studie av anestesisykepleieres erfaringer

2019

PICC-line, a peripherally inserted central venous catheter has been implemented by several Norwegian hospitals in recent years. Nurse Anesthetists play an important role in this process, and have been given new tasks as a result of PICC-line implementation. This study aimed to describe Nurse Anesthetists’ experiences with implementation of PICC-line in hospital. A qualitative design, the data are based on three focus groups interviews with fifteen nurse anesthetists. The interviews were analyzed using a hermeneutic approach. Being a PICC-line nurse led to a feeling of competence, independence, motivation and meaningfulness. The implementation required good structure and organization, as wel…
