Morphological analysis of the skeletal development in lateral cephalometric radiographs of HIV infected children ongoing Highly Active Antiretroviral…

2018

Background To investigate the skeletal development of HIV infected children through a morphological analysis of the cervical vertebrae (CV) in lateral cephalometric radiographs. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 86 lateral cephalometric radiographs of male and female children aged between 6 and 14 years old. The radiographs were equally distributed in groups 1 (HIV infected children) and 2 (non-infected children, paired by sex and age). Two examiners analyzed the CV according to the method of Hassel and Farman (1995). Spearman correlation coefficient was used to associate age and skeletal development within groups, while Mann-Whitney test compared the skeletal development between…

Nonsurgical treatment of skeletal anterior open bite in adult patients: Posterior build-ups.

2016

ABSTRACT Objective: To (1) evaluate the efficacy of build-ups in the correction of anterior open bite in adults, (2) evaluate their efficacy in producing molar intrusion, (3) analyze skeletal and dental changes, and (4) assess the long-term stability. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 93 lateral cephalograms from 31 patients with skeletal and dental anterior open bite. The patients had received orthodontic treatment consisting of bonded resin blocks on the maxillary molars combined with Tip-Edge Plus bracket appliances. Cephalometric measurements were performed on radiographs taken before treatment (T1), after treatment (T2), and after a retention period (T3), which were analyz…

Molar distalization with pendulum appliances in the mixed dentition: effects on the position of unerupted canines and premolars.

2004

Introduction: The pendulum appliance allows for rapid molar distalization without the need for patient compliance. Its efficiency has been confirmed in a number of clinical studies. However, the potential interactions and positional changes between the deciduous molars used for dental anchorage and the erupted and unerupted permanent teeth have yet to be clarified when this appliance is used for molar distalization in the mixed dentition. Methods: Twenty-nine patients in the mixed dentition each received a modified pendulum appliance with a distal screw and a preactivated pendulum spring for bilateral distalization of the maxillary molars. The patients were divided into 4 groups based on de…

Landmark identification on direct digital versus film-based cephalometric radiographs: A human skull study

2002

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in landmark identification on vertically scanned, direct digital and conventional (18 x 24 cm) cephalometric radiographs. Eight observers, all orthodontists or postgraduate orthodontic students, recorded 6 landmarks twice on 3 digital and 3 conventional cephalograms obtained from 3 human skulls in a standardized fashion. Digital images were displayed on a 15.1-in TFT monitor in 3:1 mode (20 x 26 cm). Recordings were transferred into standardized coordinate systems and evaluated separately for each coordinate. After correcting for magnification, precision was assessed with Maloney-Rastogi tests, and intraobserver and interobserver repr…

Early human peopling of Sicily: Evidence from the Mesolithic skeletal remains from Grotta d'Oriente

2010

The site of Grotta d'Oriente, Island of Favignana, Sicily has yielded the complete skeleton of an adult female (OB) dated to the Mesolithic age. The cranial morphometry of this individual can provide us with some useful information about the peopling of Sicily in the Early Holocene period.Morphological affinities of OB and other Sicilian Mesolithic specimens were assessed to verify hypotheses concerning the early peopling of Sicily.Craniofacial metric data were employed in a comparative analysis with European Upper Palaeolithic (UP), Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Copper/Bronze age samples, and contemporary Italians. Both a model-free and a model-bound approach were used not only to calculate c…

Surgical Highways to the Craniovertebral Junction: Is It Time for a Reappraisal?

2019

Background: The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) can be affected by a variety of congenital or acquired anomalies. Because of its complexity, a careful evaluation of bones and ligamentous structures in all three planes is required. This can be achieved by studying the CVJ in terms of several anatomical and radiological lines that have been visualized to facilitate understanding of its surgical anatomy. In this study we aimed to review the state-of-the art craniometric CVJ lines and approaches. Methods: In December 2016 a PubMed search was performed, including the search terms ‘CVJ surgical approach/line’, ‘cervical approach’, ‘craniometric measurement’, ‘CVJ anatomy’ and ‘ventral/dorsal/far-l…

Diagnostic of craniofacial asymmetry : literature review

2009

Facial asymmetry is a common feature in many syndromes, and requires surgery as the only valid treatment option. Routine diagnostic methods (frontal RX, panoramic RX and submentovertex RX) have serious limitations mainly due to the transfer from a three dimensional image to a two dimensional plane. The feasibility of such methods is poorly supported due to inherent projection errors (image magnification, cranial rotation) and identification errors (image quality, precision and reproducibility). The use of computer tomographies represents a substantial improvement in the sense of skeletal and soft tissue structures? reproduction precision. The interpretation of this new data source makes evi…

Orthopedic-orthodontic treatment of the patient with Turner's syndrome: Review of the literature and case report.

2018

Aims Turner syndrome (TS) patients have phenotypical variable presentations and they are more susceptible to endocrine, auto-immune, and structural anomalies. Typical clinical characteristics are short stature and premature ovarian insufficiency. Patients with TS show a typical cranial-facial morphology with bi-maxillary bi-retrusion, high-arched palate, micrognathia, and class II malocclusion. Aim of our study is to present the orthopedic-orthodontic treatment approach of a young TS patient and data of stability after 7 years. Methods and results A careful analysis of anamnestic data was performed. After extraoral and intraoral examination, cephalometric measurements and examination of mod…

Can cystic lesions of the jaws be considered as the cause of mandibular asymmetry?

2021

The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of condylar and ramal asymmetry in patients with a cyst larger than 10 mm in the maxilla or mandible. Condylar and ramal asymmetry index measurements of 47 patients (mean age: 28.85 ± 15.348) in the study group and 40 patients in the control group (mean age: 33.73 ± 13.095) were performed using panoramic radiographs. The study group consists of patients with cysts larger than 10 mm in diameter in the maxilla or mandible. The control group consisted of patients with no radiolucent lesions and no history of trauma. The possible statistical difference between the groups was evaluated by the Mann-Whitney U test. No statistically significant d…
