Elaboration of metal / ceramic functionally graded materials by SPS for ballistic protection

The objective is to improve ballistic performance of armors. A perfect armor combines ductility to resistto the impact and high hardness to stop projectile’s fragments. However, such an association of properties is inconsistent witha single material. The solution is to perform a functionally graded material (FGM) with a ductile metal at the back side of thesample and a hard ceramic on the top side. Non-conventional technologies like Spark Plasma Sintering allow joining orsintering all types of materials with different and additional properties. Questa monografia costituisce la sintesi dello studio effettuato dall'autrice sulle ceramiche di produzione locale e di importazione rinvenute durante le campagne di scavo realizzate negli anni 2010-2014 lungo la cinta muraria di Erice. Sono stati analizzati in modo approfondito, fornendone un catalogo dettagliato, i frammenti ceramici provenienti dagli strati di fondazione delle mura di età arcaica, studiati nell'ambito del loro contesto di scavo.

Object of this written are African cooking ware pieces found during the excavations of the so-called “Zona Mura” in the Archaeological Park of Marsala. Supported by the Soprintendenza BB.CC.AA. of Trapani, research in collaboration with the Universities of Hamburg and Palermo on the topic of “Lilybaeum Archaeological Project” are still in course of making. Ceramiche di età islamica provenienti da Castello della Pietra (Trapani)

This paper presents the first results of the study on the medieval ceramic discovered during the diggings in the hilltop of Castello della Pietra (Trapani) in the years 1973-74. The research is still in progress. Materials were found within cavities reused as dumps and are exceptionally well preserved. Within the ceramic uncovered, there are fragments of tableware, storage vessels and amphorae. These wares were used by some of the people occupying the site between the second half of the 10th century and the 11th century. Links with Ifriqija are proved by the significant importation of glazed wares.

La classificazione della ceramica da scavo prevede l’attribuzione di una tinta ad ogni coccio rinvenuto, ma l’uso regolare di un sistema per la specificazione del colore è ad oggi un problema aperto. Gli archeologi prediligono le Munsell Soil Color Chart ma la classificazione che ne deriva, oltre che della soggettività insita in tale sistema, soffre di un’ulteriore variabile legata alla difficile realizzazione sui siti di scavo delle condizioni di illuminazione controllata necessarie per il confronto tra le tavole e i cocci. Abstract In this work, a comparison of the performances of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) and portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry for the characterization of cobalt blue pigments used in the decoration of Valencian ceramics is presented. Qualitative data on the elemental composition of the blue pigments obtained using both techniques show a good agreement. Moreover, the results clearly illustrate that potters utilized different kinds of cobalt pigments in different historical periods.
