The aim of this study was to demonstrate the different results obtained from a population-based and a hospital-based stroke study in the same city.Between January 1 and December 31, 1993, we collected information on all of the first strokes in the population of the city of Dijon, in conjunction with the Dijon Stroke Registry, collecting the first-ever strokes from patients living in Dijon as well as on all the first strokes in residents and nonresidents of Dijon who were treated at Dijon University Hospital. Prophylactic Percutaneous Sealing of Lumbar Postdural Puncture Hole with Fibrin Glue to Prevent Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage in Swine

UNLABELLED We explored the effect of fibrin glue injection at the site of dural puncture on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage in a swine model. Pigs were subjected to a lumbar dural CSF puncture in the sitting position with a 17-gauge Tuohy needle. Fibrin glue 1.4 mL was injected through the same needle into the epidural space. Evans blue dye was infused through the cisterna magna 15 min later, and the appearance of dyed CSF through the skin puncture and along the needle trajectory to the dura was inspected and categorized. Assessment of brain core temperature using MR DWI-thermometry in Alzheimer disease patients compared to healthy subjects

Purpose: To assess the brain core temperature of Alzheimer disease (AD) patients in comparison with healthy volunteers using diffusion-weighted thermometry. Materials and methods: Fourteen AD patients (3 men, 11 women; age range 60–81 years, mean age 73.8 ± 6.1 years) and 14 healthy volunteers, age and sex-matched (mean age 70.1 ± 6.9 years; range 62–84 years; 5 men, 9 women) underwent MR examination between February 2014 and March 2016. Uptake and metabolism of choline by rat brain after acute choline administration.

The present study is concerned with the uptake and metabolism of choline by the rat brain. Intraperitoneal administration of choline chloride (4-60 mg/kg) caused a dose-dependent elevation of the plasma choline concentration from 11.8 to up to 165.2 microM within 10 min and the reversal of the negative arteriovenous difference (AVD) of choline across the brain to positive values at plasma choline levels of greater than 23 microM. Net choline release and uptake were linearly dependent on the plasma choline level in the physiological range of 10-50 microM, whereas the CSF choline level was significantly increased only at plasma choline levels of greater than 50 microM. The intention of this study was to examine the relation of clinical variables and cognitive dysfunction to cerebrovascular blood flow in a sample of patients with Alzheimer''s disease without any sign or symptom of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. The patients met DSM-III-R criteria for dementia of Alzheimer type. Background and Purpose Photoreactive flow changes of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in control subjects and patients with unilateral occipital lobe infarction were investigated to study the hypothesis that occipital lobe infarction of varying extent leads to a reduced visually activated flow increase in the ipsilateral PCA. Inadequate oral anticoagulation with warfarin in women with cerebrovascular event and history of atrial fibrillation: the FibStroke study

Abstract Background Women with atrial fibrillation (AF) may be treated less actively with oral anticoagulation (OAC) than men. Patients and methods We assessed sex differences in the implementation of stroke risk stratification with CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores and reasons not to use OAC in 1747 AF patients suffering their first cerebrovascular event after the AF diagnosis. Results Women were older and had more often a high stroke risk (CHADS2/CHA2DS2-VASc ≥2) than men (p < .001). On admission, 46.4% of women and 48.2% of men were on OAC with no sex difference (p = .437).
