Extreme value theory versus traditional GARCH approaches applied to financial data: a comparative evaluation

2013

Although stock prices fluctuate, the variations are relatively small and are frequently assumed to be normally distributed on a large time scale. But sometimes these fluctuations can become determinant, especially when unforeseen large drops in asset prices are observed that could result in huge losses or even in market crashes. The evidence shows that these events happen far more often than would be expected under the generalised assumption of normally distributed financial returns. Thus it is crucial to model distribution tails properly so as to be able to predict the frequency and magnitude of extreme stock price returns. In this paper we follow the approach suggested by McNeil and Frey …

The TIER on Spanish Banks

2015

This paper studies the determinants that have affected the solvency of Spanish credit institutions. Six hypotheses with data from the annual accounts of credit institutions that ranges from 2004 to 2011 are contrasted. Econometric panel data models are used. The results show that the dependence on wholesale financial markets, the NPLs and provisions for impairment, contribute negatively to the solvency. The increase in: portfolio of assets, real estate investments, leverage, staff costs and administrative and interest margin and other income, serve to strengthen solvency

Hospitalisation Cost of Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Valencia (Spain) in the Period 2009–2013: A Retrospective Descriptive Analysis

2018

Ulcers are the main cause of hospitalisation and clinical complications in patients with diabetes. We analyse the length and cost of hospital stay of patients with diabetic foot ulcers, taking into consideration that hospitalisation and, if necessary, amputation represent the greatest area of expense to the healthcare system for such patients. This analysis focuses on the treatment provided to these patients in public hospitals in the region of Valencia (Spain), registered in the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set, during the period 2009&ndash

Bayesian calibration of the nitrous oxide emission module of an agro-ecosystem model

2008

1. NitroEurope Open Science Conference on Reactive Nitrogen and the European Greenhouse Gas Balance ; Ghent (Belgique) - (2008-02-20 - 2008-02-21) / Conférence; Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the main biogenic greenhouse gas contributing to the global warming potential (GWP) of agro-ecosystems. Evaluating the impact of agriculture on climate therefore requires a capacity to predict N2O emissions in relation to environmental conditions and crop management. Biophysical models simulating the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in agro-ecosystems have a unique potential to explore these relationships, but are fraught with high uncertainties in their parameters due to their variations over time and space. H…

Leratiomyces ceres (Strophariaceae, Basidiomycota), new to Poland

2019

Leratiomyces ceres, an extra-European species hitherto unknown in Poland, was identified in a public park in Rybnik City (SW Poland). The first Polish collections of the fungus were studied using macroscopic and microscopic features. A brief description and illustration of the species, based on Polish specimens, are presented. The ecology and characteristics distinguishing L. ceres from related Leratiomyces species are also discussed.

Reliģisko svētku statuss Latvijā

2020

Tēma šobrīd ir īpaši aktuāla, ņemot vērā to, ka kopš 1990. gada katras Saeimas deputāti iesniedz identiskus…

Recent visigothic coin findings. Gold and bronze in the north of Cáceres

2017

The paper aims to document a series of Visigoth gold and bronze coins fortuitously found in the province of Cáceres, all of them isolated and alone. The exact origin of all the coins is not fully known, but it is confined surely within Cáceres. Furthermo…
