Cicero and the Opinion of the People: The Nature, Role and Power of Public Opinion in the Late Roman Republic
2007
Abstract This article deals with the concept of public opinion in the life and works of the Roman orator, philosopher and politician Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BC). It is conceptualized as a contribution to the historiography of public opinion theory. The basis for the analysis of Cicero’s body of thought is his complete oeuvre: almost 800 letters, about 60 speeches and more than 20 treatises. After an introduction to the concepts of public opinion, the article is subdivided into four sections. First, Cicero’s terms and definitions of public opinion are excerpted from his speeches and philosophical treatises. Second, the text depicts which role and qualities Cicero attributed to public o…
A way to follow the viability of encapsulated Bifidobacterium bifidum subjected to a freeze-drying process in order to target the colon: Interest of …
2012
The aim of this work was to apply flow cytometry in order to assess and compare the viability of freeze-dried entrapped bacteria with an usual technique by quantification by plate count techniques. It also aimed at studying the effect of various cryoprotectants on the viability of an entrapped Bifidobacterium bifidum subjected to freeze-drying to check their ability to be delivered all along the gastro-intestinal tract. The alginate-pectinate beads were chosen as the encapsulation matrix added with different protectants. The beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and the viability was checked by both methods. The best combination to improve viability of entrapped bacteria …
Determination of aerobic-anaerobic metabolism-related compounds in aChaoborus flavicans population by infusion ion trap mass spectrometry of extracts…
2006
In a daily migration, the aquatic larvae of Chaoborus flavicans (a phantom midge) alternate oxygen-saturated and anoxic lake strata. To investigate this cycle, larvae were collected at a natural environment, and acetate, propionate, pyruvate, lactate, glycerol, phosphate, maleate, succinate, glucose and citrate were determined. Each larva was homogenized with 200 microL water and deproteinized with a spin-filter; 50 microL aliquots were mixed with 50 microL of a buffer containing 80 mM propylamine, 20 mM HCl and 0.06 mM 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (internal standard) in methanol. The extracts were infused in an electrospray ionization ion-trap mass spectrometer. The limits of detection for th…
SPEECH AND SILENCE IN CICERO'S FINAL DAYS
2014
Composed in spring of 46 BC, Cicero's Brutus emphasizes oratorical silence, in stark contrast with the prominence of the speech act found in the Pro Marcello and first Philippic. Yet in the face of those difficult times and amidst the silence that such times engender, Cicero ironically finds his voice. This paper will demonstrate Cicero's acute awareness, in his final days, of the need to employ his rediscovered voice in light of eloquence's changed role in Rome's new political climate.
Prognostic and clinicopathological significance of tumor-stroma ratio in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma:a systematic review
2021
Analysis of the tumor microenvironment has been proposed as a strategy for the treatment and prognosis of different neoplastic processes. A grading system based on the tumor-stroma ratio (TSR), which evaluates the proportion of stroma in relation to neoplastic parenchyma at the invasion front, has shown a strong prognostic value in different neoplastic processes. The aim of the present systematic review was to understand the role of the TSR in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), evaluating its correlation with clinical and prognostic parameters. An electronic search was performed in PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Collaboration Lib…
The mechanism of hydrolysis of beta-glycerophosphate by kidney alkaline phosphatase.
1975
1. To identify the functional groups that are involved in the conversion of β-glycerophosphate by alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1) from pig kidney, the kinetics of alkaline phosphatase were investigated in the pH range 6.6-10.3 at substrate concentrations of 3 μM-30 mM. From the plots of log ṼH+ against pH and log ṼH+/KH+m against pH one functional group with pK = 7.0 and two functional groups with pK = 9.1 were identified. These groups are involved in substrate binding. Another group with pK = 8.8 was found, which in its unprotonated form catalyses substrate conversion. 2. GSH inhibits the alkaline phosphatase reversibly and non-competitively by attacking the bound Zn(II). 3. The influenc…
Vox Naturae: The Myth of Animal Nature in the Latin Roman Republic
2016
The paper examines the representation of animals as embodiment of nature in the culture of the late Roman republic. By discussing a selection of passages from Sallust, Cicero and Lucretius in conjunction with other Greek and Latin sources, the paper shows that the typically Western myth of 'animal nature' - the cultural belief that animal mirror a perennial state of nature, as opposed to human society - played a very important role in the ethical debate of the first century BC and took in this period a form which was bound to influence the centuries to come.
Sulla potuit, ego non potero? (Cic. Att. 9, 10, 2).
Silla soon becomes a real exemplum, precious, also for its flexibility, to build a framework for the interpretation of reality. And on the other hand, the events of Silla seem not by chance also to constitute …
