Polyphenols of the Mediterranean Diet and Their Metabolites in the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer.
2021
The Mediterranean diet is a central element of a healthy lifestyle, where polyphenols play a key role due to their anti-oxidant properties, and for some of them, as nutripharmacological compounds capable of preventing a number of diseases, including cancer. Due to the high prevalence of intestinal cancer (ranking second in causing morbidity and mortality), this review is focused on the beneficial effects of selected dietary phytophenols, largely present in Mediterranean cooking: apigenin, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, quercetin-rutine, and resveratrol. The role of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention of colorectal cancer and future perspectives are discussed in terms of food polyp…
Monsoon onset over Sudan-Sahel: Simulation by the regional scale model MM5.
2006
[1] The Mesoscale Model MM5 is used to study the regional features of the West African Monsoon onset. In order to increase the results, simulations are carried out for eight consecutive seasons (March to September) of the years 1994 to 2001. The results show that the model can reproduce the dynamical features of the monsoon in a reasonably good manner but the seasonal cycle seems enhanced. It is hypothesized that overestimated rainfall amounts could be related to a poor representation of the land surface characteristics. Nevertheless, the mean simulated monsoon onset dates are similar to those find in the CMAP data set. The onset is characterized by an apparent increase in zonal flow that c…
Although rare, severe complications following intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin treatment should not be overlooked!
2015
An interesting series of 22 patients affected by severe systemic toxicity following bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) intravesical adjuvant therapy for bladder cancer is presented in this issue of Inf...
Preventing Persistence of HPV Infection with Natural Molecules
2023
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. In most cases, the infection is temporary and asymptomatic; however, when persistent, it may lead to lesions that can evolve into cancer in both women and men. Nowadays, prophylactic vaccination is the primary preventive strategy for HPV infections, but vaccines do not cover all types of HPV strains. Scientific research has uncovered the beneficial role of some natural supplements in preventing persistent HPV infections or treating HPV-related lesions. We review the current insight into the roles of natural molecules in HPV infection with a special focus on epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG),…
Time course of mycobacterial infection of dendritic cells in the lungs of intranasally infected mice
2004
Summary Setting : Dendritic cells (DC) could regulate between the protective and pathogenic immune responses following tuberculous infection. In this paper we investigated if their early infection in the lungs represents a plausible alternative to cross-priming with mycobacterial antigens acquired from infected macrophages. Objective : To determine the extent and time course of infection of lung DCs following intranasal inoculation of BALB/c mice with green fluorescent protein (GFP) tagged Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Results : A fraction of GFP-BCG infected lung cells were classified as monocytic DCs with the CD11c + IA + 33D1 + CD8a − phenotype. These cells represented 5–18% of the tot…
Occurrence of CTX-M Producing Escherichia coli in Soils, Cattle, and Farm Environment in France (Burgundy Region).
2012
Article en open access; International audience; CTX-M [a major type of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBU] producing Escherichia coli are increasingly involved in human infections worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate potential reservoirs for such strains: soils, cattle, and farm environment. The prevalence of bla(CTX-M) genes was determined directly from soil DNA extracts obtained from 120 sites in Burgundy (France) using real-time PCR. bla(CTX-M) targets were found in 20% of the DNA extracts tested. Samples of cattle feces (n = 271) were collected from 182 farms in Burgundy. Thirteen ESBL-producing isolates were obtained from 12 farms and further characterized for the pr…
Characterization of a complex rearrangement involving chromosomes 1, 4 and 8 by fish and array-CGH
2012
Complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCRs) are structural aberrations involving more than two chromosomes with at least three breakpoints. CCRs can be divided into familial and de novo. Balanced CCR are extremely rare in humans and are at high risk of producing unbalanced gametes. Individuals with balanced CCR are usually phenotipically normal but report fertility problems, recurrent miscarriages or congenital anomalies in newborn offsprings as consequence of either meiotic failure or imbalanced chromosomes segregation. We describe the case of an unbalanced CCR involving chromosomes 1, 4 and 8 found in a girl with developmental delay, hexadactilia and microcephaly. The rearrangement, apparent…
Emissions and spatial variability of N2O, N2 and nitrous oxide mole fraction at the field scale, revealed with 15N isotopic techniques.
2006
Abstract The accurate measurement of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and dinitrogen (N 2 ) during the denitrification process in soils is a challenge which will help to estimate the contribution of soil N 2 O emissions to global warming. Oxygen concentration, nitrate concentration and carbon availability are generally the main factors that control soil denitrification rate and the amount of N 2 O or N 2 emitted. The aim of this paper is to present a database of the N 2 O mole fraction measured at the field scale, and to test hypotheses concerning its regulation. A 15 N-nitrate tracer solution was added to 36 undisturbed soil cores on a 20 m×20 m cultivated field plot. Fluxes of CO 2 , N 2 O and N 2 f…
