Modeling in Microbial Ecology

2014

SPE IPM; International audience; The bases and the principles of modeling in microbial community ecology and biogeochemistry are presented and discussed. Several examples are given. Among them, the fermentation process is largely developed, thus demonstrating how the model allows determining the microbial population growth rate, the death rate, and the maintenance rate. More generally, these models have been used to increase the development of bioenergetic formulations which are presently used in biogeochemical models (Monod, Droop, DEB models). Different types of interactions (competition, predation, and virus–bacteria) are also developed. For each topic, a complete view of the models used…

A novel technique for the CMRR improvement in a portable ECG system

2017

This paper presents a new technique to improve the quality of the ECG signals, increasing the Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR). We developed a portable wireless Bluetooth ECG system able to acquire 12 leads, communicating with Smartphones and PCs. Many experiments have been made for measuring CMRR decay due to the difference on skin-electrodes impedances, the asymmetries of the amplifiers input stages and external components. Using some digital potentiometers, the system is able to compensate for these, increasing the CMRR of about 18 dB.

Modulation of Nrf2/ARE pathway by food polyphenols: a nutritional neuroprotective strategy for cognitive and neurodegenerative disorders

2011

In recent years, there has been a growing interest, supported by a large number of experimental and epidemi-ological studies, for the beneficial effects of some phenolic substances, contained in commonly used spices and herbs, in preventing various age-related pathologic conditions, ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases. Although the exact mechanisms by which polyphenols promote these effects remain to be elucidated, several reports have shown their ability to stimulate a general xenobiotic response in the target cells, activating multiple defense genes. Data from our and other laboratories have previously demonstrated that curcumin, the yellow pigment of curry, strongly induces…

Calcitonin gene-related peptide partly protects cultured smooth muscle cells from apoptosis induced by an oxidative stress via activation of ERK1/2 M…

2003

Abstract Oxidative stress induced by a glucose/glucose oxidase (G/GO) generator system dose-dependently decreased the viability of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) as estimated by MTT assay. Cell death was induced in 40% of cells exposed to 0.2 IU/ml of the free radical generating mixture. Annexin-V labeling, Hoechst staining together with DNA laddering demonstrated that apoptosis was responsible for this cell loss. Pretreatment of the cells with 10−8 M calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) significantly attenuated the damaging effect of the oxidative stress. Indeed, cell viability was estimated to be 80% in CGRP-treated group, instead of 60% in absence of CGRP treatment. This …

Oxidation effects in antiaggregogenic properties of Epigallocatechingallate

2021

Epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant flavonoid in green tea, has been extensively studied for its potential in the treatment of amyloid related disorders. This molecule was found to modulate abnormal protein self-assembly, reducing resulting cellular toxicity. EGCG is known to suppress or to slow down the aggregation processes of several proteins, thus supporting the idea that general mechanisms regulate its anti-aggregogenic effects and, interestingly, in the oxidised form it demonstrated an higher efficiency in reducing protein aggregation with respect to intact molecule. We here investigate the effects of intact and oxidized EGCG the thermal aggregation pathway of Bovine Se…

Metal stresses modify soluble proteomes and toxin profiles in two Mediterranean strains of the distributed dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum

2022

WOS:000789651000009; HABs involving Alexandrium pacificum have been reported in metal-contaminated ecosystems, suggesting that this distributed species adapts to and/or can tolerate the effects of metals. Modifications in soluble proteomes and PST contents were characterized in two Mediterranean A. pacificum strains exposed to mono- or polymetallic stresses (zinc, lead, copper, cadmium). These strains were isolated from two anthropized locations: Santa Giusta Lagoon (Italy, SG C10-3) and the Tarragona seaport (Spain, TAR C5-4F). In both strains, metals primarily downregulated key photosynthesis proteins. Metals also upregulated other proteins involved in photosynthesis (PCP in both strains)…

Exercise ECG Testing and Stress Cardiac Magnetic Resonance for Risk Prediction in Patients With Chronic Coronary Syndrome

2021

Vasodilator stress cardiac magnetic resonance (VS-CMR) has become crucial in the workup of patients with known or suspected chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). Whether traditional exercise ECG testing (ExECG) contributes prognostic information beyond VS-CMR is unclear. We retrospectively included 288 patients with known or suspected CCS who had undergone ExECG and subsequent VS-CMR in our institution. Clinical, ExECG, and VS-CMR variables were recorded. We defined the serious adverse events (SAE) as a combined endpoint of acute coronary syndrome, admission for heart failure, or all-cause death.During a mean follow-up of 4.2 ± 2.15 yr, we registered 27 SAE (15 admissions for acute coronary syndr…

Analysis of Cardiac Pulse Arrival Time Series at Rest and during Physiological Stress

2022

The study of cardiovascular dynamics is pivotal in the prevention and monitoring of cardiovascular diseases. Pulse Arrival Time (PAT) series contain information concerning not only the dynamics of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), but of all the systems involved in the regulation of cardiovascular homeostasis. This study aims to highlight how indexes extracted from PAT series in time-, frequency- and information-domain allow to discriminate among different physiological conditions. Analyses were carried out on 76 young healthy subjects, at rest and during orthostatic or mental stress. Our results show that PAT indexes vary according to the ANS condition, and may thus be useful parameters …
