The glocalizing duality of contemporary sport

2010

AbstractThis paper assesses the current debate, in the sphere of the sociology of sport, on globalization and sport, arguing that the advance of world sport now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, is better understood in terms of the phenomenon of glocalization, that is, as a process by which global demands and forces conform or adapt to local conditions (Robertson), contributing in this way to the production of ‘township’ and ‘community’ and to the emergence of national identities. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 1993 European Football Championship and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Football Cup are presented as examples of the dual and paradoxical character of contemporary sport i…

2013

Background: Acute stress may trigger vascular events. We aimed to investigate whether important football competitions involving the French football team increased the occurrence of stroke. Methods: We retrospectively retrieved data of fatal and nonfatal stroke during 4 World Football Cups (1986, 1998, 2002, and 2006) and 4 European Championships (1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004), based on data from the population-based Stroke Registry of Dijon, France. Engagement in sports virtual brand communities

2018

Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of sports sponsorship in virtual brand communities (VBCs) on consumers' engagement within these communities. We used a professional team in the Scotiabank National Opening Championship (Chile) as the study context and collected data from participants (N = 268) on the team's social networks. We used structural equation systems and the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) technique to test the hypotheses. The results present five causal combinations, considering factors inherent to the team sponsor that influence engagement within a VBC. The QCA model and SEM explain 78.5% and 71% of engagement, respectively. The most noteworthy variab…

2021

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we conduct daily life, as well as sports training and sports competitions. Given the stress produced by COVID-19, and the “bubble” safety measures for the World Sambo Championship, held in Novi Sad, from the 6th to the 8th of November, 2020, athletes might have experienced more stress than athletes normally would in non-pandemic conditions. Therefore, the current study aimed to create a psychological profile of sambo athletes participating in the Sambo World Championship and living in this condition. Methods: One-hundred-fifteen participants took part in the study, completing the Profile of Mood Scale (POMS), the Pittsburg Sleep Quality I…

Concepts and Framework

2014

Alongside defining the term ‘event’, the relevant literature has developed five characteristics for distinguishing events: (1) the event schedule, (2) the event strategy, (3) the event period, (4) the event content and (5) the event size (Preuss et al., 2009, 26). While singular events in the area of art and culture (including historical jubilee celebrations and concerts) are considered as being of vital importance, singular events in sports are rather an exception and comparatively limited (ibid.) Events in the area of sport are typically considered as regularly held events within an event series (Kurscheidt, 2006). It is however to be differentiated between guest-events being held from a …

The Role of Financial and Managerial Variables on the Policy towards Home-grown Players in English Soccer

2012

The training and development of young players both as athletes and individuals is one of the task soccer governing bodies assign to professional soccer team in order to fully exploit the social aspects of sport activities. Recently UEFA imposed new rules to improve the use of home-grown players. We analyze a panel data of English Premier and Championship league clubs for the seasons 2001-02 to 2005-06 in order to understand what clubs characteristics lead to the employment of young players in the team during official matches. Sport commercialization and the employment of star players have been considered harmful to this role. Our findings suggest that, counter-intuitively, economic and comm…
