Billiards in magnetic fields: A molecular dynamics approach

2009

We present a computational scheme based on classical molecular dynamics to study chaotic billiards in static external magnetic fields. The method allows to treat arbitrary geometries and several interacting particles. We test the scheme for rectangular single-particle billiards in magnetic fields and find a sequence of regularity islands at integer aspect ratios. In the case of two Coulomb-interacting particles the dynamics is dominated by chaotic behavior. However, signatures of quasiperiodicity can be identified at weak interactions, as well as regular trajectories at strong magnetic fields. Our scheme provides a promising tool to monitor the classical limit of many-electron semiconductor…

Types I and II intermittencies in a cascade laser model

1995

Abstract We report on types I and II intermittencies found in a cascade laser model. A continuous transition from one to another type of intermittency, which involves the coexistence of both types of laminar phases within the same time series, is found. Type II intermittency has special characteristics such as its origin at a frequency locked two-torus. When frequency unlocked this torus bifurcates to a three-torus, further giving rise to a type II intermittent like behaviour with new features during the laminar phases.

Apparent remote synchronization of amplitudes: A demodulation and interference effect

2018

A form of "remote synchronization" was recently described, wherein amplitude fluctuations across a ring of non-identical, non-linear electronic oscillators become entrained into spatially-structured patterns. According to linear models and mutual information, synchronization and causality dip at a certain distance, then recover before eventually fading. Here, the underlying mechanism is finally elucidated through novel experiments and simulations. The system non-linearity is found to have a dual role: it supports chaotic dynamics, and it enables the energy exchange between the lower and higher sidebands of a predominant frequency. This frequency acts as carrier signal in an arrangement rese…

Spectral analysis of two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard models

2016

One-dimensional Bose-Hubbard models are well known to obey a transition from regular to quantum-chaotic spectral statistics. We are extending this concept to relatively simple two-dimensional many-body models. Also in two dimensions a transition from regular to chaotic spectral statistics is found and discussed. In particular, we analyze the dependence of the spectral properties on the bond number of the two-dimensional lattices and the applied boundary conditions. For maximal connectivity, the systems behave most regularly in agreement with the applicability of mean-field approaches in the limit of many nearest-neighbor couplings at each site.

Chaotic Antiferromagnetic Nano-Oscillator driven by Spin-Torque

2021

We theoretically describe the behavior of a terahertz nano-oscillator based on an anisotropic antiferromagnetic dynamical element driven by spin torque. We consider the situation when the polarization of the spin-current is perpendicular to the external magnetic field applied along the anisotropy easy-axis. We determine the domain of the parametric space (field, current) where the oscillator demonstrates chaotic dynamics. Characteristics of the chaotic regimes are analyzed using conventional techniques such as spectra of the Lyapunov exponents. We show that the threshold current of the chaos appearance is particularly low in the vicinity of the spin-flop transition. In this regime, we consi…

Turbulent mixing and dispersion mechanisms over flexible and dense vegetation

2019

The present study investigates flow turbulence and dispersion processes in the presence of flexible and dense vegetation on the bed. The turbulent dispersion coefficients and the terms of the turbulent kinetic energy equation are determined by using data collected in a straight laboratory channel with living vegetation on the bed. Results show that the turbulent integral lengths assume an order of magnitude comparable to the stems’ characteristic dimension independently by the direction and the turbulence assumes an isotropic behavior. The coefficients of dispersion have a trend similar to that of the turbulent lengths and assume low values in the longitudinal, transversal and vertical dire…

Chaotic-like behavior of modulated waves in a nonlinear discrete LC transmission line

2003

International audience; Modulational instability (MI) in a discrete nonlinear LC transmission line is investigated. The higher order nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation modeling modulated waves propagation in the network allows to predict the MI conditions, with additional features, compared to the standard NLS model. More precisely, a chaotic-like behavior of the system, which is observed in a particular frequency domain, is related to the nonrepeatability of the numerical experiments.
