Simulation of the relative atomic populations of elements 1 ≤ Z ≤89 following charge exchange tested with collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy…

2019

© 2019 The Authors Calculations of the neutralisation cross-section and relative population of atomic states were performed for ions beams (1 ≤ Z ≤ 89) at 5 and 40 keV incident on free sodium and potassium atoms. To test the validity of the calculations, the population distribution of indium ions incident on a vapour of sodium was measured at an intermediate energy of 20 keV. The relative populations of the 5s 2 5p 2 P 1/2 and 5s 2 5p 2 P 3/2 states in indium were measured using collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy and found to be consistent with the calculations. Charge exchange contributions to high-resolution lineshapes were also investigated and found to be reproduced by the calc…

Upgrades to the collinear laser spectroscopy experiment at the IGISOL

2020

Abstract We give an overview of recent changes to the collinear laser spectroscopy beamline in the IGISOL laboratory. We present a new data acquisition system, commissioning of a newly installed charge exchange cell, and cooler-voltage calibration measurements. Currently ongoing modifications to the RFQ cooler-buncher are also discussed.

Energy loss and straggling of MeV Si ions in gases

2017

We present measurements of energy loss and straggling of Si ions in gases. An energy range from 0.5 to 12 MeV/u was covered using the 6 MV EN tandem accelerator at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and the K130 cyclotron accelerator facility at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Our energy-loss data compare well with calculation based on the SRIM and PASS code. The new straggling measurements support a pronounced peak in He gas at around 4 MeV/u predicted by recent theoretical calculations. The straggling curve structure in the other gases (N2, Ne, Ar, Kr) is relatively flat in the covered energy range. Although there is a general agreement between the straggling data and the theoretical calculat…

Charge-exchange reactions on double-βdecaying nuclei populatingJπ=2−states

2017

The $(\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}\mathrm{He},t)$ charge-exchange reaction populating ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states has been examined at 420 MeV incident energy for a series of double-$\ensuremath{\beta}$ decaying nuclei, i.e., $^{76}\mathrm{Ge}$, $^{82}\mathrm{Se}$, $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$, $^{100}\mathrm{Mo}$, $^{128}\mathrm{Te}$, $^{130}\mathrm{Te}$, and $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$. The measurements were carried out at the Grand Raiden spectrometer of the Research Center for Nuclear Physics at the University Osaka with typical spectral resolution of 30--40 keV. It is found that the charge-exchange reaction leading to ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ spin-dipole states is selective to…

Approximate triangle amplitude for three-body charge exchange processes.

1996

The single-rescattering contribution to the amplitude pertaining to three-body charge exchange reactions (triangle amplitude) contains the off-shell Coulomb {ital T}-matrix {ital T}{sup {ital C}} describing the intermediate-state Coulomb scattering of charged subsystems. For ease of computation, the latter is usually replaced by the potential {ital V}{sup {ital C}} which, however, is unsatisfactory in many cases. An alternative approximation, obtained by {open_quote}{open_quote}renormalizing{close_quote}{close_quote} the {open_quote}{open_quote}triangle{close_quote}{close_quote} contribution with {ital V}{sup {ital C}} instead of {ital T}{sup {ital C}} by a simple analytic expression, is sh…

Energy-loss straggling of 2-10 MeV/u Kr ions in gases

2013

Measurements have been performed on a time-of-flight setup at the Jyväskylä K130 cyclotron, aiming at energy-loss straggling of heavy ions in gases. Theoretical predictions based on recently developed theory as well as an empirical interpolation formula predict that straggling can be more than ten times higher than Bohr straggling in the MeV/u regime. Our measurements with up to 9.3 MeV/u Kr ions on He, N2, Ne and Kr targets confirm this feature. Our calculations show the relative contributions of linear straggling, bunching including packing, and charge exchange. Our results for stopping cross sections are compatible with values from the literature. Funding Agencies|EU||Academy of Finland …

Nuclear weak response from the combined study of beta-decay and charge-exchange reaction

2009

Studying the weak nuclear response, especially the Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions, of stable as well as unstable pf-shell nuclei, is one of the key issues in nuclear and astro-nuclear physics. We study the decay half-lives and the GT transitions starting from Tz = ±1 and ±2 mirror nuclei, respectively, by means of β decays and complementary hadronic (3 He , t) charge-exchange reactions. Under the assumption that isospin is a good quantum number, symmetry is expected for mirror nuclei and the GT transitions starting from the mirror nuclei. The half-lives and branching ratios and the measured strength distributions of GT transitions are compared and also combined for the understanding of the …

Inclusive pion double charge exchange on 16O at 0.6-1.1 GeV

2003

The inclusive pion double charge exchange (DCX) on oxygen nuclei has been measured in the region where additional pion production is kinematically forbidden. The experiment was performed at ITEP PS at incident pi- kinetic energies T_0= 0.59, 0.75 and 1.1 GeV. The integrated forward differential cross section was found to decrease with energy slowly. At 1.1 GeV it exceeds the theoretical prediction within the conventional sequential single charge exchange mechanism with a neutral pion in the intermediate state (Glauber elastic rescattering) by about half an order of magnitude. The sequential mechanism with two pions in the intermediate state (Glauber inelastic rescatterings), which was propo…

Threshold π0 photo- and electro-production in a meson-exchange model

2003

We show that, within a meson-exchange dynamical model describing well most of the existing pion electromagnetic production data up to the second resonance region, one is also able to obtain a good agreement with the pi^0 photo- and electroproduction data near threshold. In the case of pi^0 production, the effects of final state interaction in the threshold region are nearly saturated by single charge exchange rescattering. This indicates that in ChPT, it might be sufficient to carry out the calculation just up to one-loop diagrams for threshold neutral pion production.

Response of asymmetric nuclear matter to isospin-flip probes

1999

Abstract We investigate the RPA response of asymmetric nuclear matter to external fields which induce charge exchange between nucleons, both at zero and finite temperature. Closed expressions are obtained for the RPA response in each spin channel when the nucleon–nucleon interaction is of the Skyrme type. Exchange terms are fully taken into account. We consider the transferred momentum, asymmetry and temperature as the relevant parameters of our study. Special emphasis is given to the role of neutron excess in relation to the collective states at low momentum.
