Search for Supernova Neutrino-Bursts with the AMANDA Detector

2001

The core collapse of a massive star in the Milky Way will produce a neutrino burst, intense enough to be detected by existing underground detectors. The AMANDA neutrino telescope located deep in the South Pole ice can detect MeV neutrinos by a collective rate increase in all photo-multipliers on top of dark noise. The main source of light comes from positrons produced in the CC-reaction of anti-electron neutrinos on free protons $\antinue + p \to e^+ + n$. This paper describes the first supernova search performed on the full sets of data taken during 1997 and 1998 (215 days of live time) with 302 of the detector's optical modules. No candidate events resulted from this search. The performan…

First T2K measurement of transverse kinematic imbalance in the muon-neutrino charged-current single- π+ production channel containing at least one pr…

2021

This paper reports the first T2K measurement of the transverse kinematic imbalance in the single-$\pi^+$ production channel of neutrino interactions. We measure the differential cross sections in the muon-neutrino charged-current interaction on hydrocarbon with a single $\pi^+$ and at least one proton in the final state, at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The extracted cross sections are compared to the predictions from different neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators. Overall, the results show a preference for models which have a more realistic treatment of nuclear medium effects including the initial nuclear state and final-state interactions.

Search for heavy vector-like quarks coupling to light quarks in proton–proton collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2012

This letter presents a search for singly produced vector-like quarks, Q, coupling to light quarks, q. The search is sensitive to both charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) processes, p p --> Q q --> W q q' and p p --> Q q --> Z q q' with a leptonic decay of the vector gauge boson. In 1.04/fb of data taken in 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, no evidence of such heavy vector-like quarks is observed above the expected Standard Model background. Limits on the heavy vector-like quark production cross section times branching ratio as a function of mass m_Q are obtained. For a coupling kappa_(qQ) = v/m_Q, where v is the Higgs vacuum expectation value…

A method for detection of muon induced electromagnetic showers with the ANTARES detector

2012

The primary aim of ANTARES is neutrino astronomy with upward going muons created in charged current muon neutrino interactions in the detector and its surroundings. Downward going muons are background for neutrino searches. These muons are the decay products of cosmic-ray collisions in the Earths atmosphere far above the detector. This paper presents a method to identify and count electromagnetic showers induced along atmospheric muon tracks with the ANTARES detector. The method is applied to both cosmic muon data and simulations and its applicability to the reconstruction of muon event energies is demonstrated. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Prospects for charged current deep-inelastic scattering off polarized nucleons at a future electron-ion collider

2013

We present a detailed phenomenological study of charged-current-mediated deep-inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized nucleons at a future Electron-Ion Collider. A new version of the event generator package DJANGOH, extended by capabilities to handle processes with polarized nucleons, is introduced and used to simulate charged current deep-inelastic scattering including QED, QCD, and electroweak radiative effects. We carefully explore the range of validity and the accuracy of the Jacquet-Blondel method to reconstruct the relevant kinematic variables from the measured hadronic final state in charged current events, assuming realistic detector performance parameters. Finally, we est…

Asymptotic 3-loop heavy flavor corrections to the charged current structure functions FLW+−W−(x,Q2) and F2W+−W−(x,Q2)

2016

We derive the massive Wilson coefficients for the heavy flavor contributions to the nonsinglet charged current deep-inelastic scattering structure functions ${F}_{L}^{{W}^{+}}(x,{Q}^{2})\ensuremath{-}{F}_{L}^{{W}^{\ensuremath{-}}}(x,{Q}^{2})$ and ${F}_{2}^{{W}^{+}}(x,{Q}^{2})\ensuremath{-}{F}_{2}^{{W}^{\ensuremath{-}}}(x,{Q}^{2})$ in the asymptotic region ${Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\gg}{m}^{2}$ to 3-loop order in quantum chromodynamics at general values of the Mellin variable $N$ and the momentum fraction $x$. Besides the heavy quark pair production, also the single heavy flavor excitation $s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}c$ contributes. Numerical results are presented for the charm quark contributions, …

Search for the t and b' quarks in hadronic decays of the Z0 boson

1990

We present a search for the third generation up type quark t and a possible fourth down type quark b' in hadronic Z0 decays observed in DELPHI at the LEP collider. For any scenario with a decay through the charged current or into a charged Higgs with a mass at least 6 GeV/c2 below the t and 3 GeVc2 below the b' mass, we set a lower limit for the t quark mass at 44.0 GeV/c2 and for the b' mass at 44.5 GeV/c2. For specific scenarios the mass limits are slightly higher, e.g. for charged current decays the limits are 44.5 and 45.0 GeV/c2 respectively, where all limits are given at a 95% confidence level. © 1990.

First Observation of PeV-Energy Neutrinos with IceCube

2013

We report on the observation of two neutrino-induced events which have an estimated deposited energy in the IceCube detector of 1.04 $\pm$ 0.16 and 1.14 $\pm$ 0.17 PeV, respectively, the highest neutrino energies observed so far. These events are consistent with fully contained particle showers induced by neutral-current $\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$ ($\bar\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$) or charged-current $\nu_{e}$ ($\bar\nu_{e}$) interactions within the IceCube detector. The events were discovered in a search for ultra-high energy neutrinos using data corresponding to 615.9 days effective livetime. The expected number of atmospheric background is $0.082 \pm 0.004 \text{(stat)}^{+0.041}_{-0.057} \text{(syst)}$. T…
