A Multipurpose Instrument To Measure the Vitreous Properties of Charged Colloidal Solids

We present a new high-precision light-scattering setup to study the properties of colloidal solids. It combines static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, and torsional resonance spectroscopy with a flexible and reliable preparational procedure. All three experiments can be performed quasi-simultaneously on the same mechanically undisturbed sample. Thus, unequivocal identification of glassy behavior in a comprehensive characterization dependent on interaction parameters becomes possible. A detailed description of the mechanics is given. Enhanced structural correlations accelerate diffusion in charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions

Theoretical calculations for colloidal charge-stabilized and hard sphere suspensions show that hydrodynamic interactions yield a qualitatively different particle concentration dependence of the short-time self-diffusion coefficient. The effect, however, is numerically small and hardly accessible by conventional light scattering experiments. Applying multiple-scattering decorrelation equipment and a careful data analysis we show that the theoretical prediction for charged particles is in agreement with our experimental results from aqueous polystyrene latex suspensions.

The signature of trapped antihydrogen ($\overline{\mathrm{H}}$) atoms is the annihilation signal detected when the magnetic trap that confines the atoms is suddenly switched off. This signal would be difficult to distinguish from the annihilation signal of any trapped $\overline{p}$ that is released when the magnetic trap is switched off. This work deduces the large cyclotron energy ($g$137 eV) required for magnetic trapping of $\overline{p}$, considers the possibility that such $\overline{p}$ are produced, and explores the effectiveness of an electric field applied to clear charged particles from the trapping volume before $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ detection. A search is presented for new particles in an extension to the Standard Model that includes a heavy Higgs boson (H-0), an intermediate charged Higgs-boson pair (H-+/-), and a light Higgs boson (h(0)). The analysis searches for events involving the production of a single heavy neutral Higgs boson which decays to the charged Higgs boson and a W boson, where the charged Higgs boson subsequently decays into a W boson and the lightest neutral Higgs boson decaying to a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. Such a cascade results in a W-boson pair and a bottom-antibottom-quark pair in the final state. The Debye-Huckel-Potential in combination with an effective or renormalized charge is a widely and often successfully used concept to describe the interaction in charged colloidal model systems and the resulting suspension properties. Charged colloidal particles in a charged wedge: do they go in or out?

Using real-space microscopy experiments, theory and computer simulation, we study the behaviour of highly charged colloidal particles which are confined between two highly charged plates forming a wedge geometry. Under low salt conditions it is experimentally observed that colloidal particles accumulate in the cusp of a wedge to form dense fluid or crystalline ordered structures. This behaviour is found for various cell geometries, salt concentrations and gravitational strengths, and even stays stable when additional convection is present in the system. The rate coefficients for capture of charged particles by spherical top molecules, which by isotopic substitution become symmetric top molecules with small dipole moment, are expressed analytically for the two limiting cases of weak coupling of the molecular angular momentum to the collision axis (dominating Coriolis interaction, the fly-wheel [FW] approximation) and strong coupling (negligible Coriolis interaction, the adiabatic channel [AC] approximation).
