The aim of this essay is to argue against the atomistic conception of man that underlies much of modern philosophy and to support, in contrast, a hermeneutical approach that makes possible to defend a holistic individualism. The article constitutes a prolegomenon to the issue of the service of Silesian Evangelicals in the Swedish army during the Great Northern War (1700 –1721), which has so far been absent in scholarly literature. The main objective of this text is to analyse their motives for joining the military service of the Kingdom of Sweden, as well as to trace their career and position in the officer corps. Tämä tutkielma käsittelee tiedon ja taidon suhdetta pragmatistisessa tietoteoriassa samalla sivuten kasvatusfilosofiaa. Tieto ja taito nähdään pragmatismissa yhteenkietoutuneina. Väitän, että tämä pitäisi ottaa huomioon koulutusjärjestelmäämme pohtiessa. Tutkielman kannalta tärkein argumenttini on pragmatismin väite, ettei tietoa voi nähdä toiminnasta erillisenä. Charles de Gaulle, one of the most notable leaders of the French history, rose to power outside democratic processes. When he departed for London in June 1940 to continue the opposition against Germany, de Gaulle was not an elected official nor did he hold a significant governmental post. He was also lacking public support, but nevertheless managed to become the symbol of French resistance and emerge as the leader of post-war France. Years later, he again became the head of his country outside democratic processes, yet history does not question his legitimacy as a leader.
