Charles XIV Jean (alias Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte) and the Finnish Question

2008

One of the first important acts of Charles Jean XIV as head of Sweden was to renounce the idea of reconquering Finland. It was a difficult position to take, considering the conditions of the time, and in all likelihood, he swung back and forth for several months before taking a definitive decision, contrary to what he might have asserted later. Moreover, the regent, then sovereign, of Sweden, was forced to justify his choice throughout his reign and to navigate between the dangerous reefs of a diverse opposition , which was organised to varying degrees. Thus, the Finnish policy was, for another thirty years, a thorn in the side of the royal power at Stockholm.

"Nodier and sadism: the "monstrous turpitudes" of Smarra"

2021

Nodier studies have scarcely examined the relationship between Nodier and Sade, the first one having apparently done everything to lessen his interest in the sulphurous work of the marquis. However, little is known, Nodier is the inventor, or the propagator of the word “sadism” in the French language, which appeared for the first time in 1834, in the 8th edition of the "Dictionnaire Universel" by Boiste, that, precisely, revised, amended and largely amplified by Nodier. The objective of this article is to shed light on this immorality-stricken relationship between a writer concerned about his reputation and in search of respectability (Nodier was elected to the Académie française in 1833, a…

2017

Classical Archeology Clashing with the World of Diplomacy: the Case of Salomon Reinach in 1881 Studies on the ties between archeology and diplomacy focus mostly on the way a few individuals reconciled a double career and realized the ideal of a hybrid figure: the diplomat as archeologist. Less attention has been paid to the relations, on a daily basis, between classical archeology and the world of consulates and embassies in the Eastern Mediterranean. Most of the time, one relies on the widespread cliché of the archeologist as a victim of bureaucracy. The case studied here is that of Salomon Reinach (1858-1932) and his abundant correspondence, held by the bibliothèque Méjanes (Aix-en-Proven…

Navegando hacia Italia.

Opera, ball and spoken theatre at the royal palace of Caserta

2021

The royal palace of Caserta was built at the behest of Charles of Bourbon but completed under his son, Ferdinand IV. During the second half of the Eigheteenth Century, it hosted many different musical activities; succesfull serious and comic operas already performed in the theatres of Naples as well as vocal and instrumental concerts were offered there to a selected audience. Tragedies, “all’immprovviso” comedies and balls were also frequently enjoyed by the members of the royal family. In the small center of San Leucio, 4 kilometres far from Caserta, Paisiello’s “Nina o sia La pazza per amore” was premiered in 1789.

Sismondi nel giudizio di Francesco Ferrara

2011

2023

The understanding of contemporary economic geographies and global “social facts” represent the best challenge for Burawoy’s public sociology. Scholars wonder whether sociology can successfully address our time’s problems, keeping its spirit of service to the community alive. Indeed, recent political and economic events require formulating a new sociological imagination that is more creative, open, and accessible to the general public. In this paper, we use some of the most significant intersections of Mills’ work, between history and personal biography, to highlight the sociological imagination’s significant role in understanding the present. We use practical cases of applying the concept o…
