On the internal multivariate quality control of analytical laboratories. A case study: the quality of drinking water

2001

Abstract Multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) tools, based on principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS) regression and other regression models, are used in the present study for automatic detection of possible errors in the methods used for routine multiparametric analysis in order to design an internal Multivariate Analytical Quality Control (iMAQC) program. Such tools could notice possible failures in the analytical methods without resorting to any external reference since they use their own analytical results as a source for the diagnosis of the method's quality. Pseudo-univariate control charts provide an attractive alternative to traditional univariate …

Applying polygenic risk scoring for psychiatric disorders to a large family with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder

2018

Psychiatric disorders are thought to have a complex genetic pathology consisting of interplay of common and rare variation. Traditionally, pedigrees are used to shed light on the latter only, while here we discuss the application of polygenic risk scores to also highlight patterns of common genetic risk. We analyze polygenic risk scores for psychiatric disorders in a large pedigree (n ~ 260) in which 30% of family members suffer from major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. Studying patterns of assortative mating and anticipation, it appears increased polygenic risk is contributed by affected individuals who married into the family, resulting in an increasing genetic risk over generat…

Boundaries between law and religion: considerations regarding the use of curses in the documents of Norman Sicily

2022

The word ‘boundary’ does not only indicate a physical division between different worlds. The border often represents a point of contact. This concept of a ‘boundary’ is particularly critical in the field of legal history because often the plurality of iura contributes not only to the fusion of different cultures but also to the creation of new ones. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relevance and the meaning of expressions of Anathema and curse it’s possible to find in some Latin documents that date back to the Norman period of Sicily. This period is pivotal for the consolidation of the secular and spiritual power of the Church and the use of curses by the lay power highlights…

Pushing in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy to the shores of the Island of stability

2013

One hundred years after the discovery of the atomic nucleus by Ernest Rutherford, the nuclear chart has been extended far from stability, providing more and more stringent tests for nuclear models. Nuclei at the extremes of the chart are produced with extremely low production cross-sections and one has to ingeniously upgrade the best experimental devices in order to reduce the observational limits.

Modeling Changes for SHOIN(D) Ontologies: An Exhaustive Structural Model

2013

Ontology development starts with a rigorous ontological analysis that provides a conceptualization of the domain to model agreed by the community. An ontology, specified in a formal language, approximates the intended models of this conceptualization. It needs then to be revised and refined until an ontological commitment is found. Also ulterior updates, responding to changes in the domain and/or the conceptualization, are expected to occur throughout the ontology life cycle. To handle a consistent application of changes, a couple of ontology evolution methodologies have been proposed. Maintaining the structural consistency is one of the ontology evolution criteria. It implies modeling chan…

Ingegneri militari nella Sicilia degli Asburgo: formazione, competenze e carriera di una figura professionale tra Cinque e Seicento

2015

During the Sixteenth century and the first half of the following one, Sicily played a key role in the strategy of defense of the Spanish Empire from the looming Turkish threat, being an island considered as a baluarte against the Turks. Yet despite this absolute centrality in the military policy of the Spanish monarchy, till now historical research has preferred to provide broader spectrum interpretations at the expense of in-depth studies on individual technicians or overall pictures about the figure of the military engineer. We will present a synoptic view attesting the time period of activity covered by each military technician working for the kingdom of Sicily, within a wider study conc…

It is time to abandon “Expected bladder capacity.” Systematic review and new models for children's normal maximum voided volumes

2013

Background There is an agreement to use simple formulae (expected bladder capacity and other age based linear formulae) as bladder capacity benchmark. But real normal child's bladder capacity is unknown. Aims To offer a systematic review of children's normal bladder capacity, to measure children's normal maximum voided volumes (MVVs), to construct models of MVVs and to compare them with the usual formulae. Methods Computerized, manual and grey literature were reviewed until February 2013. Epidemiological, observational, transversal, multicenter study. A consecutive sample of healthy children aged 5–14 years, attending Primary Care centres with no urologic abnormality were selected. Particip…

Analyzing E-Commerce Websites: A Quali-Quantitive Approach for the User Perceived Web Quality (UPWQ)

2016

The electronic commerce (e-commerce) is an increasingly important phenomenon and this research deals with perceived quality from the users-customers point of view. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the critical factors determining the User Perceived Web Quality (UPWQ) for e-commerce.

We use the Pareto Chart as qualitative methodology able to identify the UPWQ considering not only technical features (ease of use, design, smart phone and tablet responsivity, information), but also emotional features such as trust, empathy, free shipping and discount. The Pareto chart main has the advantage to classify the selected features by their relevance.
<p&…
