Numerical Simulations on the Growth of Thin Oxide Films on Aluminum Substrates

2010

We investigated the oxidation of nanocrystalline aluminum surfaces by using variable charge molecular dynamics at 600 K under three oxygen pressures: 1, 10 and 20 atm. The interaction potential was described by the electrostatic plus (Es+) model that allows dynamical charge transfer among atoms. We mainly focused on the effect of the oxygen pressure on the oxidation kinetic, the chemical composition and the microstructure of the oxide films formed. The results show that oxidation kinetics as well as chemical composition and microstructure depend on the applied oxygen pressure. The oxide film thickness tends to a limiting value equal to ~3 nm. Finally, we obtained a partially crystalline oxi…

Effect of Mechanoactivation on Interfacial Interaction in Metal/Oxide Systems

2006

Properties of interfaces in solid state metal/oxide joints (Al/SiO2, Al/MgO, Al/glass, Mg/MgO, Mg/SiO2, In/glass etc.) are reported. The interfaces were formed by plastic deformation of metal on the oxide surface at room temperature. Their structure, chemical composition, and micromechanical properties were studied by the AFM, XRD, SIMS, optical microscopy, and precision microindentation techniques. A noticeable adhesion was observed for metals with high affinity for oxygen and only in the regions of the maximum shear stress. Formation of an interfacial reaction zone with an oxygen concentration gradient is detected. In this zone metals are nanostructured and noticeably hardened. The effect…

Low-pressure synthesis and Bridgman growth of Hg1−xMnxTe

1999

To reduce Hg high pressure related to the high-temperature synthesis reaction between the components in elemental form, Hg 1-x Mn x Te bulk crystals were produced by a two-step procedure including (I) the alloy synthesis using HgTe crystals grown by the cold travelling heater method and elemental Mn and Te to complete the desired composition, followed by (II) the Bridgman growth. The growth was carried out at temperature in the range of 700-850°C and rate of 1 mm/h. The Hg 1-x Mn x Te crystals have been characterised by X-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and Hall effect techniques. Although the distribution coefficient of Mn was…

Abstract. This paper presents results from the "INUIT-JFJ/CLACE 2013" field campaign at the high alpine research station Jungfraujoch in January/February 2013. The chemical composition of ice particle residuals (IPR) in a size diameter range of 200–900 nm was measured in orographic, convective and non-convective clouds with a single particle mass spectrometer (ALABAMA) under ambient conditions characterized by temperatures between −28 and −4 °C and wind speed from 0.1 to 21 km h−1. Additionally, background aerosol particles in cloud free air were investigated. The IPR were sampled from mixed-phase clouds with two inlets which selectively extract small ice crystals in-cloud, namely the Count…

Dynamics of pistachio oils by proton nuclear magnetic resonance relaxtion dispersion

2011

A number of pistachio oils were selected in order to test the efficacy of nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation dispersion (NMRD) technique in the evaluation of differences among oils (1) obtained from seeds subjected to different thermal desiccation processes, (2) retrieved from seeds belonging to the same cultivar grown in different geographical areas and (3) produced by using seed cultivars sampled in the same geographical region. NMRD measures relaxation rate values which are related to the dynamics of the chemical components of complex food systems. Results not only allowed to relate kinematic viscosity to relaxometry parameters but also were successful in the differentiation among the…

First Principles Calculations of Oxygen Vacancy Formation and Migration in Ba1−xSrxCo1−yFeyO3−δPerovskites

2011

Based on first principles DFT calculations, we analyze oxygen vacancy formation and migration energies as a function of chemical composition in complex multicomponent (Ba,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3−δ perovskites which are candidate materials for SOFC cathodes and permeation membranes. The atomic relaxation, electronic charge redistribution and energies of the transition states of oxygen migration are compared for several perovskites to elucidate the atomistic reason for the exceptionally low migration barrier in Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ that was previously determined experimentally. The critical comparison of Ba1−xSrxCo1−yFeyO3−δ perovskites with different cation compositions and arrangements shows that …

Metal distribution in road dust samples collected in an urban area close to a petrochemical plant at Gela, Sicily

2006

Eight samples of road dust were collected from three different localities (industrial, urban, peripheral) of the town of Gela (Italy) to characterize their chemical composition and to assess (a) the influence of the petrochemical plant and the urban traffic on the trace element content in different grain-size fractions of street dust and (b) the solid-phase speciation of the analysed metal using sequential extraction. The samples were sieved into six particle size ranges: 500–250, 250–125, 125–63, 63–40, 40–20 and <20 μm and then analysed for 15 trace elements by ICP-MS. Sequential extraction of metals was performed on each subsample. A principal component analysis was also carried out to d…

Chemical composition of the essential oils of three endemic species of Anthemis sect. Hiorthia (DC.) R.Fern. growing wild in Sicily and chemotaxonomi…

2014

The chemical composition of the essential oils isolated from the aerial parts of Anthemis pignattiorum Guarino, Raimondo & Domina and A. ismelia Lojac. and the aerial parts and flowers of Anthemis cupaniana Tod. ex Nyman , three endemic Sicilian species belonging to the section Hiorthia, was determined by GC-FID and GC/MS analyses. (Z)-Muurola-4(14),5-diene (27.3%) was recognized as the main constituent of the A. pignattiorum essential oil, together with isospathulenol (10.6%), sabinene (7.7%), and artemisyl acetate (6.8%), while in the oil obtained from the aerial parts of A. ismelia , geranyl propionate (8.8%), bornyl acetate (7.9%), β-thujone (7.8%), neryl propionate (6.5%), and t-muurol…

XRMA analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis of dental enamel from human permanent teeth exposed to hydrogen peroxide of varying pH

2019

Background This in vitroinvestigation shows how 3.3% H2O2, at different pH-values affects the enamel. Material and Methods A number of fifteen human premolars were used. The enamel of the coronal half in six of the teeth, were exposed by H2O2. Nine teeth were prepared to enamel powder. The enamel was exposed to 3.3% H2O2, at six different pH-values (pH range 4.5 - 7.0). Analyses of the topography of enamel performed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the chemical composition of enamel by X-ray microanalysis (XRMA). X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysed the crystallinity in enamel powder. Results The exposure to H2O2 at pH5.5 resulted in a decrease of O in the exposed enamel, and ch…
