Partial oxidation of aromatic alcohols via TiO2 photocatalysis: the influence of substituent groups on the activity and selectivity

2012

Aromatic alcohols with substituent groups in different positions have been partially oxidised to the corresponding aldehydes in a photocatalytic system in order to investigate the influence of the substituents on reactivity and selectivity to aldehyde. To this aim benzyl alcohol, 2-methoxybenzyl alcohol, 3-methoxybenzyl alcohol, 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol, 2,4-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol have been photocatalytically oxidised to their corresponding aldehydes in aqueous TiO2 suspensions under near-UV irradiation. Home-made and commercial rutile TiO2 samples were used as photocatalysts. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, T…

Interpenetrated 3D porous scaffolds of silk fibroin with an amino and octadecyl functionalized hyaluronic acid

2015

An ethylenediamine (EDA) and octadecylamine (-C18) hyaluronic acid (HA) derivative, named HA-EDA-C18, has been used for the production of interpenetrated composite biomaterials with silk fibroin. The peculiar ionic strength sensibility of this HA derivative allows the production of porous matrices without the need for chemical crosslinking. Scaffolds have been produced through a salt leaching procedure by exploiting the properties of silk fibroin and HA-EDA-C18 to physically crosslink when forced through a syringe loaded with NaCl. The porosity of the sponges, comprised between 70-80%, was dependent on the amount of each polymer and NaCl size distribution. Moreover, through FT-IR analysis, …

Highly fluorescent and photostable organic- and water-soluble CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots capped with thiols

2012

Highly fluorescent organic- and water-soluble CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with thiol ligands chemisorbed on the QD surface were synthesized by the replacement of amine ligands by alkyl thiols under very mild conditions. The QDs exhibited an even greater photostability than the initial core-shell amine capped QDs.

Structural studies of adsorbed protein (betalactoglobulin) on natural clay (montmorillonite)

2014

International audience; In this work, the adsorption of a small globular protein (betalactoglobulin, BLG), on a natural montmorillonite clay (Mt) was investigated in acidic buffer (pH = 3). The combination of different characterization techniques such as zetametry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscopy, fluorescence and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies shed light on the interaction mechanism between the clay mineral and the proteins. For low BLG concentration, a slight increase of the interlayer spacing of the clay mineral was noticed as well as structural changes of the protein. In contrast, as the concentration of BLG increased, the adsorption led to a…

Radiation synthesis of polyaspartamide functionalised hydrogels for sustained release of fragrances

2005

The aim of the present investigation is to assess the possibility of obtaining a biocompatible material device which is able to deliver oil-soluble fragrances in air over a length of time. Aqueous solutions of polyaspartamide functionalised with glycidyl methacrylate have been cross linked through gamma irradiation in the presence of a lipophilic model fragrance, emulsified prior to irradiation. Two emulsification conditions have been considered at two different concentrations of both fragrance and surfactant in water. Chemical hydrogels have been obtained in correspondence to two irradiation absorbed doses and have been characterised for their solubility properties and swelling ability in …

Synthesis of polycaprolactone by microwave irradiation ? an interesting route to synthesize this polymer via green chemistry

2003

Poly(e-caprolactone) has become an important biocompatible and biodegradable polymer. Indeed, due to its multiple biomedical applications, the synthesis of polycaprolactone has received increased attention in the past few decades. Moreover, microwave irradiation is a very clean modern technique widely used for green chemistry. Here, several polymers were synthesized by microwave irradiation, without any solvent, using nontoxic, biologically acceptable lanthanide halides as initiators. Reaction times varied between 2 and 90 min. The molecular weights of the obtained polymer products were between 3,000 and 16,000 g/mol. After polymerization, the polycaprolactone polymers were functionalized b…

Insights into the Formation and Structures of Molecular Gels by Diimidazolium Salt Gelators in Ionic Liquids or “Normal” Solvents

2016

Insights are provided into the properties of molecular gels formed by diimidazolium salts both in “normal” solvents and ionic liquids. These materials can be interesting for applications in green and sustainable chemistry in which ionic liquids play a significant role, like catalysis and energy. In particular, two positional isomers of a diimidazolium cation have been examined with a wide range of anions for their ability to form gel phases. In particular, di-, tri-, and tetravalent anions bearing aliphatic or aromatic spacers were paired with the divalent cations. The properties of the organo- and ionogels formed have been analyzed by means of several different techniques, including calori…

Thioester-functionalised and oxime-based hexametallic manganese(iii) single-molecule magnets

2017

Two novel hexametallic MnIII complexes of formulae [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(3-atpa)2(EtOH)6]·2EtOH·2H2O (1) and [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(6-atha)2(EtOH)6]·6EtOH (2) [H2N-saoH2 = salicylamidoxime, 3-hatpa = 3-(acetylthio)propionic acid, 6-hatha = 6-(acetylthio)hexanoic acid] have been synthesised by using thioester-carboxylate ligands and magnetostructurally characterised. 1 crystallises in the triclinic system with space group P and 2 crystallises in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c. The study of the dc and ac magnetic susceptibility reveals single-molecule magnet behaviour for both compounds with spin-ground states S = 12 and S = 4 for 1 and 2, respectively. Hence, 1 and 2 are new mem…

Sorption of high pressure fluid mixtures into semi-crystalline polymers: investigation of the system carbon dioxide/vinylidenefluoride/poly(vinyliden…

2008

A novel experimental apparatus for measuring gas absorption has been adopted to study sorption of carbon dioxide CO2 and vinylidenefluoride (VDF) in a semi crystalline polymer, namely poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF). The experimental technique allows to calculate simultaneous absorption of different components in the polymer phase, through a gas chromatographic determination of the composition of the fluid phase. To take into account indirectly the polymer swelling, a suitable not-absorbable probe, namely argon, has been added to the fluid phase. Concentrations of molecules absorbed in the polymer phase were simply calculated through mass balance equations written for each component in the …

Elaboration and characterization of organic/inorganic hybrid nanoporous material incorporating Keggin-type Mo-Si polyanions

2007

A novel nanoporous (pore size of 11 nm in average, BET surface area of 30 m2/g, pore volume of 300 mm3/g) hybrid inorganic-organic material was synthesized using the solid-phase interaction at room temperature of plant-originated phenylpropanoid polymer lignin and a Keggin-type heteropolyanion [SiMo12O40]4-. The partly reduction of Mo(VI) to Mo(V) and complexes formation between lignin and polyanion have been established by EPR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. The XRD pattern and FT-IR spectrum of the hybrid material and indicates that [SiMo12O40]4- anion maintains the Keggin structure.
