Phase behavior and elastic properties of a slightly crosslinked liquid crystalline main-chain polymer

1990

A liquid crystalline main-chain polymer was slightly crosslinked by a reaction withα, ω-difunctionalized oligo-siloxanes. Crosslinking does not disturb the liquid crystalline phases, which are identified by x-ray measurements as smecticB and smecticA phases. Measurements of the elastic properties of the crosslinked sample show rubber-like elasticity, even in the liquid crystalline phases. A difference of 7 K was found between cooling and heating for the smecticA/isotropic transition from DSC and mechanical measurements.

Spinodal decomposition of chemically fueled polymer solutions

2021

Out-of-equilibrium phase transitions driven by dissipation of chemical energy are a common mechanism for morphological organization and temporal programming in biology. Inspired by this, dissipative self-assembly utilizes chemical reaction networks (CRNs) that consume high-energy molecules (chemical fuels) to generate transient structures and functionality. While a wide range of chemical fuels and building blocks are now available for chemically fueled systems, so far little attention has been paid to the phase-separation process itself. Herein, we investigate the chemically fueled spinodal decomposition of poly(norbornene dicarboxylic acid) (PNDAc) solution, which is driven by a cyclic che…

Study of the micro-phase separation in LC-polymers with paired mesogens

1990

Differential scanning calorimetry and miscibility investigations were used to study the micro-phase separation of liquid-crystalline dimesogenic side-group polysiloxanes. Diluted co-polysiloxanes exhibit two glass transition temperatures and an unusual miscibility behavior. The observed biphasic character is compared with that of certain amphiphilic systems.

Surfaces have a profound effect on the structure and related properties of multiphase polymeric materials, such as polymer mixtures and block copolymer mesophases. In particular, phase transitions in the bulk (unmixing, microphase separation, etc.) may be complemented by surface-induced transitions (formation of wetting layers, surface-directed spinodal decomposition, surface-induced ordering). This review gives a brief introduction to the phenomenological theories of such phenomena, emphasizing the simplest approach based on Flory—Huggins—de Gennes free energy functionals and associated Monte Carlo simulations. More sophisticated theories and recent experiments are mentioned briefly.

Reactions of Piperazin-2-one, Morpholin-3-one, and Thiomorpholin-3-one with Triethyl Phosphite Prompted by Phosphoryl Chloride: Scope and Limitations

2019

The reaction of the title lactams with triethyl phosphite prompted by phosphoryl chloride provided six-membered ring heterocyclic phosphonates or bisphosphonates. These novel scaffolds might be of interest as building blocks in medicinal chemistry. The course of the reaction was dependent on the structure of the used substrate. Thus, morpholin-3-one and thiomorpholin-3-one readily provided the corresponding 1,1-bisphosphonates (compounds 1, 2, 7, 14 and 16), whereas the protection of their nitrogen atom resulted in the formation of dehydrophosphonates (compounds 5, 6, and 8). Piperazin-2-one reacted differently yielding mixture of cis- and trans- piperazine-2,3-diyl-bisphosphonates (compoun…

Photoluminescence ZnO nanorod biosensors for medical and food safety applications

2017

Photoluminescence (PL) ZnO nanorods (NR) are prospect materials for biosensor applications. They can be deposited on solid state substrates and/or dispersed in liquid media. ZnO NRs demonstrate strong UV emission (3.28–3.3 eV), which depends on surface charge, formed by adsorbed molecules. In the present work we report on ZnO NRs, deposited on glass slides, used as biosensor templates for detection food pathogens. Change of ZnO PL after interaction with biomolecules was recorded. Dependence of PL intensity vs concentration of biomolecules was obtained. In the second part, ZnO nanorods were used as PL biomarkers. A suspension of ZnO NRs, conjugated with SSEA-4 antibodies (aSSEA-4) in PBS buf…

Facile laser-assisted synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles covered by a carbon shell with tunable luminescence

2015

We report a one-step strategy at ambient conditions for the production of hybrid inorganic core–carbon shell nanoparticles by means of pulsed laser ablation of inorganic targets (LiNbO3, Au, and Si) in hydrocarbon liquids such as toluene and chloroform. The core of these spherical nanoparticles consists of the target material, whereas the shells are carbon structures (multilayer graphite-type carbon and amorphous carbon), which are formed due to the thermal decomposition of the organic liquid in contact with hot inorganic nanoparticles ejected from the bulk target. These carbon shells emit photoluminescence in the blue-green spectral region and the obtained luminescence, in which the lumine…

High‐Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells Using Molecularly Engineered, Thiophene‐Rich, Hole‐Transporting Materials: Influence of Alkyl Chain Length on …

2016

The synthesis and characterization of a series of novel small-molecule hole-transporting materials (HTMs) based on an anthra[1,2-b:4,3-b′:5,6-b′′:8,7-b′′′]tetrathiophene (ATT) core are reported. The new compounds follow an easy synthetic route and have no need of expensive purification steps. The novel HTMs are tested in perovskite solar cells and power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of up to 18.1% under 1 sun irradiation are measured. This value is comparable with the 17.8% efficiency obtained using 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9′-spirobifluorene as a reference compound. Similarly, a significant quenching of the photoluminescence in the first nanosecond is observed, ind…

Photosensitive functionalized surface-modified quantum dots for polymeric structures via two-photon-initiated polymerization technique.

2015

In this paper, the surface modification of CdSe- and CdZnS-based quantum dots (QDs) with a functional silica shell is reported. Functionalized silica shells are prepared by two routes: either by ligand exchange and a modified Stober process or by a miniemulsion process with amphiphilic poly(oxyethylene) nonylphenylether also know as Igepal CO-520 (IG) as oligomeric amphiphile and modified silica precursors. The polymerizable groups on the functionalized silica shell allow covalent bonding to a polymer matrix and prevent demixing during polymerization and crosslinking. This allows the homogeneous incorporation of QDs in a crosslinked polymer matrix. This paper furthermore demonstrates that t…
