From Screening to Scale-Up: The DoE-Based Optimization of Electrochemical Reduction of l-Cystine at Metal Cathodes
2021
Design of experiment (DoE) is a powerful statistical tool in establishing improved chemical processes. An optimization and scale-up of the electrochemical reduction of l-cystine to l-cysteine is pr...
FEEDFORWARD CONTROL SCHEMES FOR CHEMICAL PROCESSES: AN ALGORITHMIC APPROACH
1983
Abstract A procedure for the systematic determination of feedforward control schemes for chemical processes is presented and an algorithm is derived. The proposed method makes use of the structural features of the process to be controlled and can be applied to linearized process models. Worked examples show how the algorithm can be a handy tool that systemizes the choice of manipulative and measuring variables in feedforward control schemes for multivariate processes.
Mechanical, Kinetic and Morphological Correlations during the Scale Growth of Niobium and Zirconium Oxides
2001
Oxidation of niobium at 700°C and zirconium at 850°C, in air or oxygen pressures from 20 to I 000 hPa, lead to the formation in one case of a stratified Nb 2 O 5 oxide scale and in the other case a more compact ZrO 2 oxide scale. Analyses of the evolutions of phases, crystalline textures and mechanical stresses during oxidation are determined by X-ray diffraction techniques. Interactions between chemical processes, crystalline building and mechanical processes constitute together the driving force of the reaction and can explain the differences in morphologies of oxide scales.

2020
Several different definitions were in the past proposed to describe the term chemical speciation, and some of them were accepted from the scientific community [...]
ChemInform Abstract: Coupled Semiconductor Systems for Photocatalysis. Preparation and Characterization of Polycrystalline Mixed WO3/WS2 Powders.
2010
Mixed WO3/WS2 powders were prepared by oxidation of WS2. The physical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy; they were strongly dependent upon the time and temperature of oxidation. The chemical state and the elemental distribution of the sample surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic results have showed that the aqueous suspensions of the mixed WO3/WS2 systems have significantly higher activities than pure WS2 and WO3 for the photodegradation of phenol. The enhanced performance can be related to the presence of heterojunctions WO3/WS2 on the single parti…
From Spherical Mesopores to Worm-Shaped Mesopores : Morphology Transition in Titania–Polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) Composite Films with Increasi…
2013
A morphology transition from spherical mesopores to worm-shaped mesopores within titania block copolymer composite thin films has been observed by varying the sol–gel reaction time from 40 min to 48 h in the four-component templating system of polystyrene-$\mathit{b}$-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-$\mathit{b}$-PEO), 1,4-dioxane, concentrated HCl, and titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) with a PS-$\mathit{b}$-PEO mass concentration of 0.25 wt.-%. The impact of the sol–gel reaction time on the local structure, long-range lateral structure, and vertical structure of the as-prepared, calcined, and UV-degraded thin films as well as the structural changes in solution have been systematically investigate…
Green synthesis of Pd@graphene nanocomposite: Catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols
2016
Abstract Due to their excellent physicochemical properties and synergistic effect, graphene metallic NPs based nanocomposites have gained significant attention in various technological fields including catalysis. Here we demonstrate a single pot, facile and environmental friendly synthesis of catalytically active palladium(Pd)@graphene nanocomposites (SP-HRG-Pd) by the simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide (GRO) and PdCl 2 using Salvadora persica L. (miswak) root extract (RE) as bioreductant. The synthesis of SP-HRG-Pd was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman and X-ray photoelectro…
CoIILnIII dinuclear complexes (LnIII = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) as platforms for 1,5-dicyanamide-bridged tetranuclear CoII2LnIII2 complexes: A magneto-…
2012
Five acetate-diphenoxo triply-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(I) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) of formula [Co(mu-L)(mu-Ac)Ln(NO3)(2)] and two diphenoxo doubly-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(III) = Gd, Tb) of formula [Co(H2O)(mu-L)Ln(NO3)(3)]center dot S (S = H2O or MeOH), were prepared in one pot reaction from the compartmental ligand N,N',N ''-trimethyl-N,N ''-bis(2-hydroxy3-methoxy-5-methylbenzyl)diethylene triamine (H2L). The diphenoxo doubly-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes were used as platforms to obtain 1,5-dicyanamide-bridged tetranuclear Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(III) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er). All exhibit ferromagnetic interactions between the Co-II and Ln(III) ions and in the case …
1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of diaryldiazomethanes across N-ethoxy-carbonyl-N-(2,2,2-trichloroethylidene)amine and reactivity of the resulting 2-azabut…
2016
Abstract 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of diaryldiazomethanes Ar2C N2 across Cl3C–CH N–CO2Et 1 yields Δ3-1,2,4-triazolines 2. Thermolysis of 2 leads, via transient azomethine ylides 3, to diaryldichloroazabutadienes [Ar(Ar')C N–CH CCl2] 4. Treatment of 4a (Ar = Ar' = C6H5) and 4c (Ar = Ar' = p-ClC6H4) with NaSR in DMF yields 2-azabutadienes [Ar2C N–C(H) C(SR)2] 5. In contrast, nucleophilic attack of NaStBu on 4 affords azadienic dithioethers [Ar2C N–C(StBu) C(H)(StBu)] (7a Ar = C6H5; 7b Ar' = p-ClC6H4). The reaction of 4a with NaSEt conducted in neat EtSH produces [Ph2C N–C(H)(SEt)–CCl2H] 8, which after dehydrochloration by NaOMe and subsequent addition of NaSEt is converted to [Ph2C N–C(SEt) C…
Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration
2013
Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.
