Human papillomaviruses in oral carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders: a systematic review.

2011

Human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral carcinoma (OSCC) and potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is controversial. The primary aim was to calculate pooled risk estimates for the association of HPV with OSCC and OPMD when compared with healthy oral mucosa as controls. We also examined the effects of sampling techniques on HPV detection rates. Methods: Systematic review was performed using PubMed (January 1966-September 2010) and EMBASE (January 1990-September 2010). Eligible studies included randomized controlled, cohort and cross-sectional studies. Pooled data were analysed by calculating odds ratios, using a random effects model. Risk of bias was based on characteristics of study group, appr…

Studi tassonomici sulle popolazioni italiane di Halocnemum strobilaceum (Amaranthaceae)

2012

Halocnemum strobilaceum (Pall.)

2000

UNLABELLED Spinal deformity is common in muscular dystrophy and usually occurs after loss of walking ability. Unlike in idiopathic and other scoliosis forms, there seems to be no side preference of the convexity. Aim of the study was to analyse, if there is any relation between incidence and extent of walking ability, lower limb contractures and development of scoliosis. METHODS In a retrospective study, 45 patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy who underwent surgery were analysed, concerning walking ability, contractures of lower extremities and scoliosis. RESULTS 1: No scoliosis was observed in ambulatory patients. 2: 96% of the wheelchair bound patients suffered from scoliosis. 3: 96%…

Fresh-cut products from cactus species

2005

Various species of Cactaceae family can serve a source of delicious and healthy fresh foodstuffs. Marketing cacti as ready-to-eat (fresh-cut) products may significantly expand their consumption, on condition that their quality, safety and longevity would answer the market demands. The present work was aimed at studying the storability of fresh-cut products prepared from several edible cactus species and looking for ways to improve their keeping quality. The experiments included fruit of cactus pear Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller, cactus apple (koubo) Cereus peruvianus (L.) Miller, and dragon fruit (pitaya) Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton and Rose, as well as cladodes (pads) of nopal (ve…

[Respiratory muscle aids during an episode of aspiration in a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy].

2005

We report the case of a Duchenne muscular dystrophy patient with good bulbar function but severely decreased forced vital capacity (9%) and spontaneous peak cough flow (PCF) (2.35 L/s). The patient needed continuous noninvasive ventilation (NIV) consisting of a volumetric ventilator with a nighttime nasal mask and a daytime mouthpiece. He also required application of manually assisted coughing techniques by insufflation with a resuscitation bag and chest thrust (manually assisted PCF after maximum insufflation capacity of 4.33 L/s). An episode of serious food aspiration was resolved by his main caregiver through NIV and manually assisted coughing. Bronchoscopy under sedation using NIV with …

Monthly Bonaire coral Sr/Ca from the last interglacial, 120.5 -129.7 ka ago

2016

Reconstructions of last interglacial (LIG, MIS 5e, ~127-117 ka) climate offer insights into the natural response and variability of the climate system during a period partially analogous to future climate change scenarios. We present well preserved fossil corals (Diploria strigosa) recovered from the southern Caribbean island of Bonaire (Caribbean Netherlands). These have been precisely dated by the 230Th/U-method to between 130 and 120 ka ago. Annual banding of the coral skeleton enabled construction of time windows of monthly resolved strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) temperature proxy records. In conjunction with a previously published 118 ka coral record, our eight records of up to 37 years in …
