Effects of forest-fuel harvesting on the diversity of dead wood and epixylic macrolichens in clear-cuts
2016
Effect of tauroursodeoxycholic acid on bile acid-induced apoptosis in primary human hepatocytes
2000
Background/aims The accumulation of endogenous bile acids contributes to hepatocellular damage during cholestatic liver disease. To evaluate the potential role of apoptotic cell death due to increased concentrations of bile acids, primary human hepatocytes were treated with hydrophobic and hydrophilic bile acids. Because the Fas receptor–ligand system may mediate apoptosis in human liver cells, the effect of toxic bile acids on hepatocellular Fas receptor expression was evaluated. Materials and methods Primary human hepatocytes were incubated with 50 and 100 μM glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA) and co-incubated with equimolar concentrations of tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA). To evaluate…
Clinicopathologic data of individuals with oral lichen planus : a Brazilian case series
2019
Background The aim of the present series was to analyze the sociodemographic characteristics, clinicopathologic features, and oral health-related quality of life of 41 individuals with oral lichen planus (OLP). Material and Methods In a retrospective analysis (1998-2018), individuals with a clinical diagnosis of OLP from a referral service of Oral Medicine of Brazil were invited for follow-up. The individuals were assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) form. Histopathological data were reviewed according to the latest criteria proposed by the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP/2016). Results This series mainly consisted of females (70.7%) in thei…
Oral Lichen Planus : risk factors of malignant transformation and follow up. Ten years retrospective study
2020
Background Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is an inflammatory chronic disease. Modified World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic criteria (2003) suggest diagnosing OLP both clinically and histologically. Furthermore, it is known the potential of malignant transformation of OLP, especially those affecting mucosa. Aims of this retrospective study on 100 patients were i) to estimate the timing of transformation of OLP lesions in OSCC in a cohort of patients observed between 2008 and 2018; ii) to assess risk factors of OLP patients diagnosed with OSCC; iii) to analyse forms of OLP evolved in cancer. Material and methods A database of 100 patients diagnosed with OLP was evaluated and clinical, histol…
Application of remote online learning in oral histopathology teaching in China
2021
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the application of remote learning and virtual microscopy in oral histopathology teaching, a unique experience in China. The oral histopathology teaching in Nanjing Medical University has been extraordinary. Material and Methods 98 third-year dental students of Grade 2016 took oral histopathology theoretical course face-to-face in 2019 (Traditional group). The 94 participants of Grade 2017 took online oral histopathology course using digital methods(E-Learning platform and Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center for Dentistry) in 2020. During the practical laboratory sessions, the students in both Traditional group and Online group o…
Primary Biliary Cholangitis: advances in management and treatment of the disease
2017
Primary Biliary Cholangitis, previously known as Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, is a rare disease, which mainly affects women in their fifth to seventh decades of life. It is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by a progressive damage of interlobular bile ducts leading to ductopenia, chronic cholestasis and bile acids retention. Even if the disease usually presents a long asymptomatic phase and a slow progression, in many patients it may progress faster toward cirrhosis and its complications. The 10Â year mortality is greater than in diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus/Hepatitis C Virus coinfection and breast cancer. Ursodeoxycholic acid is the only treatment available today, b…
Chronic ulcerative stomatitis : a systematic review of the clinical and microscopic features
2019
Made available in DSpace on 2020-12-12T02:29:00Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-11-01 Background: the purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review regarding clinical and histopathological characteristics, immunopathological findings, and treatment for chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS). Material and Methods: articles in English, published from January 1962 up to November 2017, assessing clinical and immunological features, treatment, and follow-up of patientes with CUS, were retrieved from three databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library and SCOPUS). A manual literature search was also conducted. A total of 12 studies met inclusion criteria, therefore, were anal…
Considerations to the policy of future clinical therapeutic trials in DMD.
2002
In spite of rapidly increasing insight into the molecular basis of neuromuscular diseases, treatment still relies on convention and clinical studies. Experience with a multicentre double blind treatment study in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and with consecutive steroid treatment documentation for up to 8 years enables us to identify a series of crucial points on which to focus while planning such clinical trials. The most important seem to be: a carefully structured, detailed study, clear-cut aims and objectives, expertise of investigators, sufficient training of examiners, and careful monitoring. If patients with neuromuscular diseases are treated outside structured studies, their course sh…
Oral health-related quality of life of patients after solid organ transplantation is not affected by oral conditions:results of a multicentre cross-s…
2020
Background This multicentre cross-sectional study aimed in examination of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients after solid organ transplantation (SOT). Material and Methods Patients after SOT (liver, lung and heart) at one out of three German centers (Goettingen, Essen, Leipzig) were included. For comparison, a healthy control (HC) was recruited. OHRQoL was assessed by German short form of oral health impact profile (OHIP G14). Oral examination comprised: decayed-, missing- and filled-teeth index (DMF-T), remaining teeth and periodontitis severity. Results In total, 196 patients after SOT and 130 HC with comparable age, gender and smoking habits were included (p>0.05). D…
Muscle adenylate kinase in Duchenne muscular dystrophy
1986
Abstract On the basis of electrophoretic and enzyme inhibition studies it was postulated that an aberrant adenylate kinase occurs in muscle and serum of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Schirmer, R.H. and Thuma, E. (1972) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 268, 92–97; Hamada, M. et al. (1981) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 660, 227–237; Hamada et al. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 11595–11602. On the basis of the following results we conclude that Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients do not possess an unusual adenylate kinase isoenzyme. (1) In muscle biopsies from five Duchenne patients, the electrophoretic mobility of adenylate kinase and the inhibition of the enzyme by P 1 , P 5 -di(adenosine-5′)pentap…
