Teacher orchestration of classroom interaction in science: exploring dialogic and authoritative passages in whole-class discussions

2019

Whereas science is fundamentally a result of a dialogic debate, the authoritative approach has been conceived of as a fundamental part of school science. Dialogic interactions encompass the mutual appreciation of different ideas manifested in teacher supportiveness toward students and, in authoritative interactions, the focus is more on the science’s or teacher’s point of view. Whereas dialogic and authoritative interactions have been viewed as oppositional in recent educational research, authoritative interactions could well be the seed for and give strength and meaning to dialogic interactions, and thus, to the overall dialogue. The focus in this study is on the interplay between authorit…

Fulminantes Lungenödembei Malaria tropica

2003

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS A 54-year-old man was admitted because of intermittent fever for 2 days. Ten days earlier he had returned from Kenya. He had not taken any antimalarial drugs prophylactically. INVESTIGATIONS Initial blood smears showed Plasmodium falciparum in 10.4% of erythrocytes. Laboratory tests indicated hyponatremia and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Also, laboratory markers of infection and hemolysis were clearly positive and accompanied by a low-grade normocyticanaemia. Chest radiograph showed the heart size to be at the upper limit of normal and no signs of congestion, pleural effusion or inflammatory infiltrates. Sonography demonstrated hepatosplenomegaly wi…

A machine learning application to predict early lung involvement in scleroderma: A feasibility evaluation

2021

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a systemic immune-mediated disease, featuring fibrosis of the skin and organs, and has the greatest mortality among rheumatic diseases. The nervous system involvement has recently been demonstrated, although actual lung involvement is considered the leading cause of death in SSc and, therefore, should be diagnosed early. Pulmonary function tests are not sensitive enough to be used for screening purposes, thus they should be flanked by other clinical examinations

Polypeptide Markers Differentiating Juvenile and Adult Tissues in Chestnut

1993

Differences were observed between the polypeptide contents of in vitro shoot cultures derived from upper branches (adult material) and basal shoots (juvenile material) of the same chestnut tree. Cultures derived from mature crown growth yielded two polypeptide bands that were not afforded by cultures derived from juvenile basal shoots. Since all cultures were derived from the same tree the polypeptide differences appear to reflect the ontogenetic age of the starting material.

Designing for Networked Community Resilience

2016

Abstract Communities have been described to be at the heart of the preparedness for and the response to disasters. The increasing connectedness has made communities more vulnerable for their dependence on a complex network of critical infrastructures. At the same time, this very connectedness has the potential to enable communities to self-organise, engage, and connect with other communities to improve their resilience. While the pathway to more resilience is promising and has many advocates, the response to crises and disasters, time and again reveals the challenges related to (i) ad-hoc switching from preparedness to response; (ii) ad-hoc connecting professional responders, communities, v…

MALATTIA DI ERDHEIM–CHESTER: RARE LOCALIZZAZIONI SPLANCNO- ED INTRA-CRANICHE IN PAZIENTE CON STADIO AVANZATO DI MALATTIA

2015

The Samjiyon Orchestra as a North Korean Means for Gender Based Cultural Diplomacy

2020

In 2018 it appeared that a peace process on the Korean Peninsula had got underway. Lots of publicity was produced on inter-Korean relations and many types of messages and diplomatic actors started to move across the border with South Korea. One important element in this process was cultural diplomacy, conducted partly by athletes and cheering squads during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, and partly by musical ensembles. Selection of the Samjiyon Orchestra for the Pyeongchang events sheds light on the kind of image the North Korean leadership wanted to display of the country on the international stage. This article analyses the characteristics of the orchestra, where it came from, and …

Clonal population structure of the chestnut blight fungus in expanding ranges in southeastern Europe.

2008

Expanding populations are often less genetically diverse at their margins than at the centre of a species' range. Established, older populations of the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, are more variable for vegetative compatibility (vc) types than in expanding populations in southeastern Europe where C. parasitica has colonized relatively recently. To test whether vc types represent clones, we genotyped 373 isolates of C. parasitica from southern Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey using 11 sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers. Ten SCAR loci and six vegetative incompatibility (vic) loci were polymorphic in these samples. These population…

A framework for remission in SLE

2017

ObjectivesTreat-to-target recommendations have identified ‘remission’ as a target in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but recognise that there is no universally accepted definition for this. Therefore, we initiated a process to achieve consensus on potential definitions for remission in SLE.MethodsAn international task force of 60 specialists and patient representatives participated in preparatory exercises, a face-to-face meeting and follow-up electronic voting. The level for agreement was set at 90%.ResultsThe task force agreed on eight key statements regarding remission in SLE and three principles to guide the further development of remission definitions:1. Definitions of remission wi…
