Digital Storytelling Project as a Way to Engage Students in Twenty-First Century Skills Learning

2020

[EN] This paper is focused on the implications of a collaborative digital storytelling project on student engagement in the higher education context. The empirical study is conducted with an interdisciplinary group of bachelor students in a Nordic University (N = 22) and a university in Southern Europe (N = 21), and the data are collected through an online student survey. The results demonstrate that the digital storytelling project supported students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. In general, the students had positive emotional experiences with the project. This assignment format was found less stressful than a frontal presentation in the classroom, allowing the students…

Death of a 23-year-old man from cardiac conduction system injury through a blunt chest impact after a car accident.

2014

Abstract Cardiac contusion, usually caused by blunt chest trauma, has been recognized with increased frequency over the past decades. Traffic accidents are the most frequent causes of cardiac contusion resulting from a direct blow to the chest. Myocardial contusion is difficult to diagnose; the clinical presentation varies greatly, ranging from a lack of symptoms to cardiogenic shock and arrhythmia. Although death is rare, cardiac contusion can be fatal. The authors report a case of death due to a cardiac conduction system injury from a blunt chest impact following a car accident. The autopsy showed no external signs of thoracic trauma, no evident rib or sternum fractures. A small sub-endoc…

Hadron therapy information sharing prototype

2013

The European PARTNER project developed a prototypical system for sharing hadron therapy data. This system allows doctors and patients to record and report treatment-related events during and after hadron therapy. It presents doctors and statisticians with an integrated view of adverse events across institutions, using open-source components for data federation, semantics, and analysis. There is a particular emphasis upon semantic consistency, achieved through intelligent, annotated form designs. The system as presented is ready for use in a clinical setting, and amenable to further customization. The essential contribution of the work reported here lies in the novel data integration and rep…

Progressive calcifications of lung and liver in neonatal herpes simplex virus infection

1991

We report a female neonate who developed severe septicemia presenting with pneumonia and hepatitis due to an infection with herpes simplex virus type II. In spite of antiviral as well as intensive care therapy, three weeks after admission, extensive hepatic calcification was demonstrable on abdominal radiograph, a sign of severe cellular necrosis. In contrast the pulmonary infiltration recovered completely. The clinical follow up was completed by ultrasound and radiography. The infant died at the age of two months secondary to severe postnecrotic hepatic failure. At autopsy, histological evaluation confirmed the former diagnostic and technical findings; in addition, pulmonary calcifications…

Coronary artery calcium score on low-dose computed tomography for lung cancer screening

2013

Aim: To evaluate the feasibility of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) on low-dose non-gated chest CT (ngCCT). Methods: Sixty consecutive individuals (30 males; 73 ± 7 years) scheduled for risk stratification by means of unenhanced ECG-triggered cardiac computed tomography (gCCT) underwent additional unenhanced ngCCT. All CT scans were performed on a 64-slice CT scanner (Somatom Sensation 64 Cardiac, Siemens, Germany). CACS was calculated using conventional methods/scores (Volume, Mass, Agatston) as previously described in literature. The CACS value obtained were compared. The Mayo Clinic classification was used to stratify cardiovascular risk based on Agatston CACS. Differences and corre…

Deep Metric Learning for Transparent Classification of Covid-19 X-Ray Images

2022

This work proposes an interpretable classifier for automatic Covid-19 classification using chest X-ray images. It is based on a deep learning model, in particular, a triplet network, devoted to finding an effective image embedding. Such embedding is a non-linear projection of the images into a space of reduced dimension, where homogeneity and separation of the classes measured by a predefined metric are improved. A K-Nearest Neighbor classifier is the interpretable model used for the final classification. Results on public datasets show that the proposed methodology can reach comparable results with state of the art in terms of accuracy, with the advantage of providing interpretability to t…

[Respiratory muscle aids during an episode of aspiration in a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy].

2005

We report the case of a Duchenne muscular dystrophy patient with good bulbar function but severely decreased forced vital capacity (9%) and spontaneous peak cough flow (PCF) (2.35 L/s). The patient needed continuous noninvasive ventilation (NIV) consisting of a volumetric ventilator with a nighttime nasal mask and a daytime mouthpiece. He also required application of manually assisted coughing techniques by insufflation with a resuscitation bag and chest thrust (manually assisted PCF after maximum insufflation capacity of 4.33 L/s). An episode of serious food aspiration was resolved by his main caregiver through NIV and manually assisted coughing. Bronchoscopy under sedation using NIV with …

Arturo Toscanini

2018

Thanks to the new media, i.e., record, radio and TV, Arturo Toscanini was the first conductor known by every kind of public in the world. The essay examines Toscanini’s art of conducting in five crucial issues. The foundation of a supranational repertoire of orchestral music enclosing ancient, modern and contemporaneous authors (from Corelli to Strawinsky). The reform of opera house and the paths of maestro in re-thinking the Italian opera after a deep study of Richard Wagner’s Musikdrama. The impressive use of memory in view of a close control of the orchestra (he conducted by heart over 600 scores). The personal, inelegant but effective gesture, by which Toscanini fascinated orchestras in…
