Evolution of Pediatric Migraine Patients Admitted at an Emergency Department after a 10-Year Follow-Up

2023

Background: Despite its high prevalence, the clinical course of pediatric migraine has not been fully understood, and previous studies present conflicting results. We present here the findings of a 10-year follow-up study involving children with severe migraine pain admitted to our emergency department. Furthermore, all studies were carried out on selected outpatient clinical case studies. Our aim was to evaluate a population of migraine children admitted to an emergency department because of increased severity or frequency of pain or even because of very anxious parents concerning their child’s headache in order to describe their long-term outcomes, whether it differed from that of o…

The influence of short term, intensive hippotherapy on gait in children with cerebral palsy

2010

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of short term hippotherapy on functional gait changes in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Participants were two boys (ages 12 and 13) with spastic diplegia and a girl (14 yrs) with athetoid CP. Single-subject (ABA) design was used to determine quantitative changes in functional gait parameters (velocity, stride length, and cadence) following three weeks of hippotherapy. The two boys demonstrated improvement in stride length and gait velocity without sustained improvement in cadence. There was increase in stride length and cadence, but most noticeable improvements in velocity for the girl. The results indicated that it is possible th…

Reflections on Global Developments in Media Literacy Education: Bridging Theory and Practice

2011

The field of media literacy education is maturing, as evidenced by the quality of presentations of research and practice shared at the 2010 World Summit on Children and Media in Karlstad. In this article, we offer our reflections on the opportunities and challenges faced by media literacy educators as we build our global community network, develop a shared theoretical framework that transcends culture and nationality, and return to consider foundational questions about the relationship between power and agency as new visions of digital literacy emerge as educators and creative media professionals explore the new capacities and limitations of the Internet and social media.

Oral Candidiasis in children and adolescents with cancer. Identification of Candida spp

2007

Oral candidiasis represents a serious problem for children with cancer. The mortality rate of this infection has increased due to fungal septicemia, associated with a primary buccal infection. Objective: Identify the Candida spp. in buccal lesions of patients with cancer, establish the predominant species and correlate them to age and sex of the patient, clinical presentation, type of neoplasic disease and cytostatic therapy received. Study design: 62 patients, between 0-16 years, were investigated in a cross sectional study. Sample inclusion criteria: Patients with malignant neoplasic disease that were receiving cytostatic treatment and had suspicious lesions of oral candidiasis. Patients …

A Rationale and a Method for Media Education in Contemporary Society

2010

This chapter opens offering a general overview of the conceptual and methodological foundations of Media Education (ME) in the light of the deep transformations that Western society – particularly its educational institutions – has been experiencing in the last decades because of the rapid diffusion of information and communication technologies. It is argued that ME can offer valid ways to re-build a sense of citizenship in a media-saturated world. In fact, by adopting a ME perspective, education can re-establish the centrality of its role in orienting and governing change in contemporary society. School education in particular will have the chance to open itself to society and re-catch stu…

Idiopathic Non-Dental Facial Pain Syndromes in Italian Children: A Clinical Case Series

2023

Background. The orofacial pain syndromes (OFPs) are a heterogeneous group of syndromes characterized by painful attacks involving the orofacial structures. They may be summarily subdivided into two great categories: (1) orofacial pain mainly attributed to dental disorders such as dentoalveolar and myofascial orofacial pain or temporomandibular joint (TM) pain; (2) orofacial pain mainly attributed to non-dental pain as neuralgias, facial localization of primary headaches or idiopathic orofacial pain. The second group is uncommon, often described by single case reports, can often show overlapping symptoms with the first group, and represents a clinical challenge, carrying the risk of underval…

Normal-weight obesity and cardiometabolic risk : A 7-year longitudinal study in girls from prepuberty to early adulthood

2017

Objective: To study whether normal-weight obesity in childhood is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk in early adulthood. Methods: This study assessed data for 236 girls followed from prepuberty to early adulthood. Growth chart data were obtained from birth to 18 years. Body composition was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and cardiometabolic risk by calculating continuous clustered risk score (at ages 11, 14, and 18). The association of body weight status with cardiometabolic risk from childhood to early adulthood was examined. Results: Subjects with normal-weight obesity were virtually indistinguishable from their normal-weight lean peers in terms of relative body w…

The honeymoon phase – what we know today about the factors that can modulate the remission period in type 1 diabetes

2016
