The Playful Affordances of Picture Book Apps for Children

2021

The tradition of children’s literature has evolved side by side with the market of children’s entertainment, games, and toys. The selection of contemporary print products includes a wide variety of materially or technologically enhanced picture books. This background is rarely considered in the examination of children’s book applications that have attracted scholarly interest after the arrival of smartphones and tablets during the early 2010s.The relationship between picture book apps, mobile games, and digital playthings requires further examination that considers the specific affordances of the mobile platform. Leaning on five case studies, this article examines how picture book apps affo…

Psychometric properties of the Assessment Tool for Perceived Agency (ATPA-22) - utility for the rehabilitation of young adults not in education, empl…

2020

Background: Promoting and supporting agency have been at the heart of the debate multidisciplinary. To promote self-awareness of young people’s agency and identify persons in need of support the Assessment Tool for Perceived Agency (ATPA-22) was developed. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the ATPA-22. Participants were young adults not in education, employment or training (NEETs) and students in higher education (HEI). Materials and methods: The main data analysis was implemented by Many Faceted Rasch (MFR) analysis. Results: The ATPA-22 items defined a unidimensional construct with reasonable internal consistency and separation ability. The ATPA-22 was capabl…

Pharmacogenomics: A Step forward Precision Medicine in Childhood Asthma.

2022

Personalized medicine, an approach to care in which individual characteristics are used for targeting interventions and maximizing health outcomes, is rapidly becoming a reality for many diseases. Childhood asthma is a heterogeneous disease and many children have uncontrolled symptoms. Therefore, an individualized approach is needed for improving asthma outcomes in children. The rapidly evolving fields of genomics and pharmacogenomics may provide a way to achieve asthma control and reduce future risks in children with asthma. In particular, pharmacogenomics can provide tools for identifying novel molecular mechanisms and biomarkers to guide treatment. Emergent high-throughput technologies, …

Does Physical Activity Improve Inhibition in Kindergarteners? A Pilot Study

2022

Substantial empirical evidence supports the positive effects of physical activity (PA) on executive functions, but not all forms of physical activity benefit equally. Among kindergarteners, cognitively-engaging exercise seems to more strongly effect EF than simple exercise. We aimed to investigate several qualitatively different exercise formats on kindergarteners' inhibition. Participants were 75 children (M age = 68.1 months), recruited from 14 classrooms of three kindergarten schools. They were randomly assigned to three groups: control group, free play group (non-cognitively-engaging PA), and an intervention group (cognitively-engaging PA). The intervention group performed 18 sessions …

Motorisen oppimisen vaikeuden tunnistaminen ja tukeminen kouluympäristössä

2018

Motorisen oppimisen vaikeudella, kuten kehityksellisellä koordinaatiohäiriöllä (DCD), tarkoitetaan huomattavaa vaikeutta oppia uusia motorisia taitoja ja soveltaa jo opittuja taitoja uusiin tilanteisiin. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kehittää opettajien käyttöön havainnointityökalu, joka auttaa tunnistamaan motorisen oppimisen vaikeuden esi- ja alkuopetusikäisillä lapsilla. Lisäksi tutkimus selvitti, miten opettajat voivat kouluympäristössä tukea lapsia, joilla on haasteita motorisessa oppimisessa. Tutkimus muodostui neljästä osatutkimuksesta. Ensimmäisessä tutkittiin systemaattisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla maailmalla käytössä olevien havainnointilomakkeiden psykometrisiä ominais…

Perceptions of Motivational Climate, Goal Orientations, and Light- to Vigorous-intensity Physical Activity Engagement of a Sample of Finnish Grade 5 …

2016

The aim of this study was the examination of relationships between children’s perceptions of motivational climate, goal orientation, and their engagement in light- to vigorous-intensity physical activity. The sample comprised 585 school children at age of 11 to 16-year-old from three small cities located in Northeast-Finland. The cross-sectional data was collected using online questionnaires in April 2014. The findings indicated that the higher task-involving motivational climate in physical education the children reported, the higher total light- and moderate-intensity levels they accumulated. Task-involving climate also indicated higher task orientation and ego-involving climate higher eg…

Tappeleva rapuhirviö : kauhun estetiikka lastenkulttuurissa

2016

Horror in picture books aimed at children appears in many forms and may be interpreted in multiple ways. It may include ghosts and monsters, nightmares and existential fears, or, violence and content labelled as “difficult”. These elements may be portrayed and interpreted as intellectually challenging and up- lifting, as cute, normal and ”not really frightening”, or as something violent and harmful or possibly empowering. In other words, cultural horror and the ways in which we discuss or use it may aim to shock, to reassure, or to entertain. The chosen way of meaning making depends on and reflects the social positioning and performative aims of the producer or interpreter. In this study, t…

Invasive pneumococcal diseases in children aged 1-59 months in sicily, Italy: Importance of active family paediatrician surveillance and vaccination …

2014

Purpose: Aim of this study was to analyze pediatric invasive pneumococcal disease rates several years after the implementation of infant pneumococcal vaccination. Methods: The study was carried out in Sicily and involved about 30,000 children, aged 1-59 months, actively monitored by 100 family pediatricians during 2010 and 2011. All children who met the inclusion criteria were considered eligible, recorded using a stan-dardized case report form and investigated for the presence of S. pneumoniae in speci-mens from sterile sites. Results: None of the 40 eligible children was confirmed as a case of invasive pneumococ-cal disease. The incidence rate of invasive pneumococcal disease cases was 0.…
