Young people' s willingness to pay for environmental protection

2021

Abstract The cost of the ongoing degradation of natural capital will inevitably be borne by the younger generations. And, as the wave of school strikes for action against climate change have proved, they do not want their voice to be ignored. Discrete Choice Experiments are increasingly used for the valuation of environmental goods, but they have never been conducted with minors. We designed and administered such an experiment to elicit the willingness of children and teenagers, aged 8–19, to pay for environmental projects. The results suggest that their marginal willingness to pay is higher for projects in their own country (Italy) and that the utility of environmental protection is greate…

Maternal Life Satisfaction and Child Outcomes: Are They Related?

2011

This paper investigates the association between maternal life satisfaction and the developmental functioning of two- to three-year-old children as well as the socio-emotional behavior of five- to six-year-old children. We use data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP), which allows us to control for a rich set of child and parental characteristics and to use the mother’s life satisfaction before the birth of her child as an instrument to eliminate potential reverse causality. The results indicate that the more satisfied the mother, the better her child’s verbal skills and the lower his or her socio-emotional problems. The relation is more pronounced for boys than for girls. The …

Unaccompanied foreign minors in the Italian context: From legal order to networking in educational services

2016

As the result of armed conflict, poverty or natural disasters, many children move away from their families and culture of origin. In 2014, in Italy, the number of unaccompanied foreign minors was approximately 11,000. They represent the most vulnerable of the migration phenomenon and for this reason, in December 2013, the Directorate General of Immigration and Integration Policy of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, adopted new guidelines for policies on reception, repatriation and effective integration arrangements of unaccompanied foreign minors. It is possible to promote the implementation of the opportunities aimed at the children concerned activating a networking that involve Na…

AFFETTIVITA' ED ETICA NELLE RELAZIONI EDUCATIVE FAMILIARI. PERCORSI DI PHILOSOPHY FOR CHILDREN AND COMMUNITY

2021

2020

When describing the figures of saints, Eliza Piotrowska follows the order set by hagiography. However, it does not mean the reproduction of the cultural stereotype of a saint to which we have been accustomed by religious literature and folklore. We will find many images and motifs transferred from fictionalised biographies of “wondrous children.” Bearing in mind the small audience, she replaces seriousness with humour, which dominates all levels of the text. The author is not afraid to juxtapose book protagonists with contemporary children, which she also illustrates herself. She reaches for anecdotes, jokes, aphorisms, and different points of view. The author’s narrative and graphic skills…

Are paediatric headaches in the emergency department increasing? An Italian experience

2020

The aim of this study was to assess admissions, for headache, to the emergency department (ED) of the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo over a decade. The total number of ED admissions for headache was retrospectively analysed considering two 24-month periods: 2009-2010 and 2017-2018. Total admissions to the ED decreased from 55,613 to 50,096 (-10%) between the two periods considered, while the number of admissions for headache increased by 63.56% (p < 0.0001). There was also a significant increase in the number of multiple ED admissions by single children (9.5% versus 17.98% of the patients accessing the ED for headache). This significant increase in admissions for paediatric h…

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHILDREN'S SELF-PERCEIVED AND TEACHER RATINGS IN TRAIT EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ANXIETY: IS THERE A RELATIONSHIP WITH SCHOLASTI…

2022

The construct of Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been studied as a potential predictor of psychological wellbeing and social interaction during childhood. Among the different possible EI formulations, some studies about Trait EI during development have also focused on its relationship with academic performance. One main limitation pertains the self-report nature of trait EI assessment tools. The use of cross-informant ratings has become an important aspect of research and clinical practice for those working with children and adolescents because potentially resulting in a less biased approach in the evaluation process. The present study is a cross informant design which involved 150 children…

ANGER IN CHILDREN: A MINIREVIEW

2017

Aggressive behavior is a peculiar characteristic of most animal species playing an important role in species preservation and two types have been identified: interspecific and intraspecific aggression. The interspecific refers purely to the instinct of predation, while the intraspecific is the purpose for species preservation. Anger has been found in very young children between the ages of four and seven, is manifested through vocalizations, expressions and global movements affecting the entire body of the child: it is a means of communication privileged to express themselves and communicate. Anger must be considered a positive event, even if it may frighten it has a positive effect: transf…
