2000

The colonial Commissions connected to the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques. In the late nineteenth century, the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques became a bigger and bigger research organization, always closely linked to the successive political governments. With each new French conquest, a commission of parisian scientists and local correspondents was created and attached to it, as in 1864, the scientific commission for Mexico, in 1884, the commission for Tunisia, in 1908, the archeological commission for Indochina. The example studied here is that of the commssion for Tunisia, which coordonated researches in archeology and epigraphy in North Africa, thanks to …

Molecular phylogenetics of Melastomataceae and Memecylaceae: implications for character evolution

2001

Melastomataceae are among the most abundant and diversified groups of plants throughout the tropics, but their intrafamily relationships and morphological evolution are poorly understood. Here we report the results of parsimony and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses of cpDNA sequences from the rbcL and ndhF genes and the rpl16 intron, generated for eight outgroups (Crypteroniaceae, Alzateaceae, Rhynchocalycaceae, Oliniaceae, Penaeaceae, Myrtaceae, and Onagraceae) and 54 species of melastomes. The sample represents 42 of the family’s currently recognized ~150 genera, the 13 traditional tribes, and the three subfamilies, Astronioideae, Melastomatoideae, and Memecyloideae (= Memecylaceae DC.). P…

Recent trends of temperature change under hot and cold desert climates: Comparing the Sahara (Libya) and Central Asia (Xinjiang, China)

2011

Abstract According to trend computations at three stations each in Sahara desert (Libya), characterized by a “hot” desert type (“BWh”, according to the Koeppen climate classification), and in Central Asia (Xinjiang, China) identified as a “cold” desert type (“BWk”, after Koeppen), increasing annual temperatures were detected over the period 1955–2005 corresponding with global temperature warming. From 1955–1978, negative (decreasing) temperature trends were, however, observed at all three hot desert stations and at two of the three cold desert stations. From 1979–2005, strikingly positive temperature trends were seen at all six stations. In seasonal respects, winter (December to February) a…

Climate Classification and Division of China

1988

As far as a climate classification and division is concerned, China represents a great complexity and diversity due to the country’s vast territory and extremely complex landforms. In detail, three major climate-governing factors must be taken into consideration for the climate of China as such and for its division over space: (1) the geographical latitude, (2) the elevation above sea level and (3) the distance from the Pacific Ocean. Of particular importance for a climate regionalization of China is the country’s location on the southeastern corner of the Eurasian continent against the Pacific Ocean, which means that the nature of the surrounding regions varies from open oceans to compact …

Climate Zones of China

1988

Note: The climate zones respectively climate types, according to the climate regionalization scheme of Huang Bing-wei (1986), were described with particular reference to the major climate characteristics and their variation over space and time. Each climate zone also contains a climate map of China, showing distinctly the spatial distribution of the climate zone concerned. A climate diagram for a representative station was added which expresses the annual variation of precipitation and temperature, based on long-term monthly means.

Employees’ Acceptance and Involvement in Accordance with Codes of Conduct – Chinese Business Behaviour vs. Western Compliance Management Systems

2015

Abstract More stringent anti-corruption and anti-bribery laws in the US, Europe and PR China as well as the current political anti-corruption-campaign in China force Western globally active companies to implement Code of Conducts at their subsidiaries worldwide – thus also in China. There are mixed results of existing academic research on the impact of Codes of Conduct regarding ethical behaviour of the employees in connection with these Codes. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the motivation and intention of employees to accept and act according to a local Code of Conduct. This research is conducted in a cross-cultural setting (PR China, Germany, Austria) by ta…

A new species of the genus Glischrochilus Reitter (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae: Cryptarchinae) from China

2016

The cosmopolitan genus Glischrochilus Reitter, 1873 (Nitidulidae: Cryptarchinae) is distributed in Holarctic and Oriental regions. According to the most recent catalogue (Jelínek & Audisio 2007), 32 species are known from the Palaearctic region. In China the genus is represented by 13 species, most of which were described by Jelínek (1975, 1982, 1999) and Lasoń (2009).

From Tian'anmen Square to the global world stage: framing China in the German press, 1986–2006

2011

Beginning with the historical background, the study investigates how two leading German newspapers covered the People's Republic of China from 1986 to 2006. These two decades were characterized by political turmoil and increased trade relations between the two economically powerful countries. The content analysis, which focuses on the amount of coverage, topics, and journalistic forms, attempts to describe how China has been framed over the years. The findings show an increasing significance of the economy on which again and again shadows were cast by political conflicts. Six frames can be observed; some are positive (political cooperation) and some are negative (scepticism with regard to p…
