Volume XXVI is dedicated to the themes discussed during the scientific conference Dynamic Asia: Shaping the Future that took place in Riga on 13–15 April 2018, and were further explored after this conference. The conference was organised in cooperation between the Latvian Society for the Study of Religions and the Baltic Alliance for Asian Studies. This event brought together more than 80 participants from 20 countries. The topics presented at the conference are reflected in the current volume. Many of these articles are dedicated to Japanese culture, where spiritual, material and routine aspects intermingle in all walks of life. The Far East topic is expanded in papers on Korea and South E…

Teologia chińska. Szansa czy zagrożenie?

2022

Chinese theology is a challenge for Christianity. On the one hand, it presents new opportunities, and on the other, it prompts the redefinition of many terms, dogmas, and ways of thinking. Under the influence of Chinese theology, classical theology may become sinicized, i.e. influenced by the Chinese way of perceiving the world, man and the upernatural. Without knowing the philosophy, religion, art and language of the Chinese, Chinese theology may cause fear and apprehension. This can only be overcome by learning about the Asian world without fear.

Influence of traditional Chinese anti-inflammatory medicinal plants on leukocyte and platelet functions.

2003

Abstract The enzymes 5-lipoxygenase and elastase are therapeutic targets in dermatological disorders such as psoriasis. Fifteen extracts from traditional Chinese medicinal plants used to treat topical inflammations were screened for their inhibitory effect on lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase and elastase activity in intact leukocytes and platelets. Astragalus membranaceus, Forsythia suspensa and Poria cocos inhibited 5-lipoxygenase, with IC50 values of 141, 80 and 141 μg mL−1, respectively. The latter two species, along with Angelica dahurica and Angelica pubescens, also inhibited elastase (IC50 values of 80, 123, 68 and 93 μg mL−1, respectively), while A. pubescens, Atractylodes macrocephala, …

Arsenic-induced DNA hypomethylation affects chromosomal instability in mammalian cells

2004

Early genetic instability induced in dividing V79-Cl3 Chinese hamster cells by inorganic arsenic, as demonstrated in our previous investigation, was evidenced by aneuploidy and nuclear abnormalities, but not by chromosomal rearrangements. Here we report the results of cytogenetic and morphological analyses performed on the progeny of cells dividing at the end of sodium arsenite treatment after they had been expanded through 120 generations (ASO cells) and then cloned. The acquired genetic instability persisted and was increased by highly unstable chromosomal rearrangements, namely dicentric chromosomes and telomeric associations, which were not seen following acute exposure. A peculiar find…

Stable expression of rat cytochrome P450IA2 cDNA and hydroxylation of 17β-estradiol and 2-aminofluorene in V79 Chinese hamster cells

1991

In continuation of our work toward the establishment of a working cell bank for metabolic and toxicological studies, V79 Chinese hamster cells were genetically engineered for stable expression of rat cytochrome P450IA2. Full-length cDNA encoding rat P450IA2 was obtained by searching a cDNA library made from Aroclor 1254-induced rat liver mRNA and by joining a small 5'-end fragment to a fragment containing the rest of the cDNA. The sequence of the cDNA was confirmed by DNA sequencing and comparison to a previously published cDNA sequence. The reconstructed full-length cDNA was inserted into a simian virus 40 early promoter-containing eukaryotic expression vector and cotransferred with the ne…

Artesunate derived from traditional Chinese medicine induces DNA damage and repair.

2008

Abstract Artesunate is a semisynthetic derivative from artemisinin, a natural product from the Chinese herb Artemisia annua L. It exerts antimalarial activity, and, additionally, artemisinin and its derivatives are active against cancer cells. The active moiety is an endoperoxide bridge. Its cleavage leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species and carbon-centered radicals. These highly reactive molecules target several proteins in Plasmodia, which is thought to result in killing of the microorganism. DNA damage induced by artemisinins has not yet been described. Here, we show that artesunate induces apoptosis and necrosis. It also induces DNA breakage in a dose-dependent manner as sho…

Overexpression of Ogg1 in mammalian cells: effects on induced and spontaneous oxidative DNA damage and mutagenesis

1999

Chinese hamster ovary cell lines (AA8 and AS52) were stably transfected to overexpress hOgg1 protein, the human DNA repair glycosylase for 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG). In the transfectants, the repair rate of 8-oxoG residues induced by either potassium bromate or the photosensitizer [R]-1-[(10-chloro-4-oxo-3-phenyl-4H-benzo[a]quinolizin-1-yl)-carbo nyl ]-2-pyrrolidinemethanolplus light was up to 3-fold more rapid than in the parental cells. However, the improved repair had little effect on the mutagenicity of potassium bromate in the guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (gpt) locus of the OGG1-transfected AS52 cells. The steady-state (background) levels of DNA base modifications sensiti…

Detoxification of optically active bay- and fjord-region polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon dihydrodiol epoxides by human glutathione transferase P1-1 e…

1998

Dihydrodiol epoxides (DEs) are important carcinogenic metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The metabolic formation of four stereoisomeric DEs (a pair of optically active diastereomers termed as syn- and anti-form) is possible. Glutathione tranferases (GSTs) have been demonstrated to catalyze the detoxification of DEs. Purified GSTs display remarkable differences in catalytic efficiencies towards bay- and fjord-region DEs along with a high degree of regio- and stereoselectivity. Here we determined to which extent heterologously expressed human GSTP1-1, a major GST isoform in lung, affects the mutagenicity of stereoisomeric bay-region DEs of benzo[a]pyrene in Chinese hamste…
