Palaeogeographical evolution of the Egadi Islands (western Sicily, Italy). Implications for late Pleistocene and early Holocene sea crossings by huma…

2019

Abstract The continental shelf morphology offshore of western Sicily suggests that during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 20 ka cal BP), two of the Egadi Islands, Favignana and Levanzo, were connected to Sicily by a wide emerged plain, while Marettimo was only separated from the other islands by a narrow channel. We studied the relative sea-level variation from the LGM until today, focussing on two important time slices: the Mesolithic (9.5–13 ka cal BP) and the Neolithic (6.5–7.5 ka cal BP). In this research, we discuss a sea-level rise model by means of geomorphological, archaeological and geophysical observations and new radiocarbon dating of marine and terrestrial fossil fauna. The resul…

Diet and feeding habits of nesting and non-nesting ravens (Corvus corax) on a Mediterranean island (Vulcano, Eolian archipelago)

2003

The almost complete absence of information on the trophic ecology of Corvus corax for Mediterranean areas prompted the present research on the small island of Vulcano. Focal observations allowed us to survey the population, which is divided into four territorial pairs and one non-nesting flock (mean n = 23.6 ± 16.3). This flock roosted preferentially near a rubbish dump. Ravens on Vulcano proved to be omnivorous and to feed upon a wide range of food items, with the differences in diet found to be more quantitative than qualitative and related to the season and to the social system. The flock birds consumed more vegetable matter, carrion of domestic animals, other organic matter (eggshells, …

Insular variation in central MediterraneanCrociduraWagler, 1832 (Mammalia, Soricidae)

1990

Morphometric variation of Crocidura mandible in Sicily and surrounding islands (Egadi archipelago, Ustica, Pantelleria and Gozo) was analyzed by principal component and canonical variate analyses in order to integrate recent chromosomal and biochemical observations. Specimens of C. suaveolens and C. leucodon from mainland Italy and of C. russula from Sardinia were used as reference in this analysis. The biometry of the only taxon of shrews living in Sicily is significantly different from the three reference samples. This result, coupled with a recently discovered new karyotype, provides strong evidence for a new Eurasian species, for which the name C. sicula Miller 1901, was chosen. Crocidu…

New records of marine Tardigrada in the Mediterranean Sea

1996

Abstract Meiofauna from Chafarinas archipelago (western Mediterranean, N. Africa) were studied, and marine Tardigrada were identified to species level. A total of 15 species, belonging to families Stygarctidae, Halechiniscidae (Subfamilies Halechiniscinae, Florarctinae, Styraconyxinae and Tanarctinae), Batillipedidae, and Echiniscoididae, were found for the first time from the Alboran Sea and southwestern Mediterranean area. Four species and one subspecies are new records for the Mediterranean Sea: Floractus acer , F. asper , F. stellatus , Actinarctus doryphorus and Echiniscoides sigismundi hispaniensis . The male of Floractus stellatus , previously unknown to science, is described. Many s…

A Tutorial on Computational Cluster Analysis with Applications to Pattern Discovery in Microarray Data

2008

Background Inferring cluster structure in microarray datasets is a fundamental task for the so-called -omic sciences. It is also a fundamental question in Statistics, Data Analysis and Classification, in particular with regard to the prediction of the number of clusters in a dataset, usually established via internal validation measures. Despite the wealth of internal measures available in the literature, new ones have been recently proposed, some of them specifically for microarray data. Results We consider five such measures: Clest, Consensus (Consensus Clustering), FOM (Figure of Merit), Gap (Gap Statistics) and ME (Model Explorer), in addition to the classic WCSS (Within Cluster Sum-of-S…

Determinants of endometrial receptivity.

2005

Understanding the molecular changes that occur during the window of implantation is fundamental to our knowledge of human reproduction. Lately, the development of microarray technology has allowed this process to be studied from a global molecular perspective. In the last 2 years, researchers have focused their efforts on throwing light on the gene expression profile of the receptive endometrium. The genes hold the key to the development of the endometrium at any stage, and we have focused our work on the window of implantation. The four most recently published works in this field have revealed a long list of genes that are up- or downregulated at the time of implantation. Although these st…

Multithreaded Peripheral Processor for a Multicore Embedded System

2012

Multithreaded and multicore architectures represent a good solution used for increasing of parallelism degree exploited in modern computing systems and they can reduce the power dissipated in the chip by using low-frequency clock signals. These advantages recommend these parallel architectures for integration in the embedded systems, with restrictions imposed by the relatively small integration area. Particularities of embedded applications require hardware support able to handling in real time the peripheral interrupt requests. The performance of this hardware influences the performance of the entire parallel system. The current trend is to integrate in one microcontroller more processors …

A statistical calibration model for Affymetrix probe level data

2009

Gene expression microarrays allow a researcher to measure the simultaneous response of thousands of genes to external conditions. Affymetrix GeneChip{ $Ⓡ$} expression array technology has become a standard tool in medical research. Anyway, a preprocessing step is usually necessary in order to obtain a gene expression measure. Aim of this paper is to propose a calibration method to estimate the nominal concentration based on a nonlinear mixed model. This method is an enhancement of a method proposed in Mineo et al. (2006). The relationship between raw intensities and concentration is obtained by using the Langmuir isotherm theory.

Modeling of the role of conformational dynamics in kinetics of the antigen-antibody interaction in heterogeneous phase.

2012

[EN] A novel approach that may potentially be used to study biomolecular interactions including the simultaneous determination of structural and kinetic binding parameters is described in this Article for the first time. It allows a rigid distinction between the possible reaction mechanisms of biomolecular recognition, induced fit and conformational selection. The relative importance of the two pathways is determined not by comparing rate constants but the structural aspects of the interaction instead. So the exact location of antigen molecules with respect to the capture antibody is depicted experimentally, avoiding the use of X-ray crystallography. The proposed pattern is applied to study…

On the potential of NoC virtualization for multicore chips

2008

As the end of Moores-law is on the horizon, power becomes a limiting factor to continuous increases in performance gains for single-core processors. Processor engineers have shifted to the multicore paradigm and many-core processors are a reality. Within the context of these multi-core chips, three key metrics point themselves out as being of major importance, performance, fault-tolerance (including yield), and power consumption. A solution that optimizes all three of these metrics is challenging. As the number of cores increases the importance of the interconnection network-on-chip (NoC) grows as well, and chip designers should aim to optimize these three key metrics in the NoC context as …
