Immediate effects of active versus passive scapular correction on pain and pressure pain threshold in patients with chronic neck pain.

2012

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of active vs passive scapular correction on pain and pressure pain threshold at the most symptomatic cervical segment in patients with chronic neck pain. METHODS: Twenty-three volunteers with chronic, idiopathic neck pain were recruited (age, 38.9 ± 14.4 years; sex [man/woman], 3/20; Neck Disability Index, 28.1% ± 9.9%). Subjects were randomly allocated to 2 groups: active scapular correction or passive scapular correction. Pressure pain threshold and pain intensity rated on a numerical rating scale during a posteroanterior glide over the most symptomatic cervical segment were measured before and immediately after the active…

Do adverse events after manual therapy for back and/or neck pain have an impact on the chance to recover? A cohort study.

2019

Background: Manual therapy is a commonly used treatment for patients with back and neck pain. Studies have shown that manual therapy-related adverse events are mainly short in duration and mild or moderate by their intensity, affecting up to 50% of the patients. If the presence of adverse events has an impact on the chance to recover from back/neck pain is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate if mild or moderate adverse events after manual therapy has an impact on the chance to recover from back/neck pain in men and women. Methods: A prospective cohort study of 771 patients with at least three treatment sessions in a randomized controlled trial performed in January 20…

Postoperative Patient Education in Physiotherapy after Hip Arthroplasty : Patients' Perspective

2016

The objective of the present study was to explore postoperative patient education in physiotherapy from total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients' perspectives, which has been a little-studied area of research. The usefulness of rehabilitation protocols after THA has been debated over the years, and there are no clear guidelines for physiotherapy after THA METHODS: The data for the present qualitative study were collected from nine patients with THA by using individual interviews at the hospital after surgery. The interviews were audio-recorded and analysed by using a phenomenographic method RESULTS: Four different categories of postoperative patient education in physiotherapy after hip arthrop…

Conformational behaviour of 2,2?-bipyrrole

1986

The rotational potential around the interannular bond in 2,2′-bipyrrole has been calculated making use of standard minimal STO-3G and split valence 4-31G basis sets. Geometrical optimization concerning the most significant interannular internal parameters has been performed with both basis sets. The trans conformer is predicted to be more stable than the cis. The minimal basis set predicts the existence of a cisoid-gauche minimum which after limited optimization becomes very shallow and it seems to be an artifact of the rigid rotor approximation. At 4-31G level, both the trans and cis conformers represent maxima in the potential curve and two gauche minima appear at θ=46.0° and θ=147.6°, th…

On the theoretical determination of the electron affinity of ozone

1993

Multiconfigurational electron correlation methods have been analyzed in order to theoretically compute the electron affinity (EA) of ozone. The near-degeneracy correlation effects, which are so important in O3 and O 3 − , have been described using complete active space (CAS) SCF wave functions. Remaining dynamic correlation effects are computed using second-order perturbation theory (the CASPT2 method). The best calculated adiabatic value (including zero-point energy corrections), 2.19 eV, is about 0.09 eV larger than the experimental value. Comparative studies using size-consistent coupled pair functional approaches (CPF and ACPF) have also been performed. The harmonic frequencies in O 3 −…

Comparison of cartesian and lobe function Gaussian basis sets

1970

The lobe function and cartesian (spherical harmonic) gaussian are compared with reference to calculations for second-row atoms. Single and grouped gaussian basis sets which have been reported for cartesian functions are taken over directly to construct corresponding lobe function bases with identical sets of exponents and with lobe separations chosen by a scaling procedure. Total and orbital energies and SCF coefficients resulting from calculations on the second-row atoms using the two types of functions for both primitive and grouped gaussian basis sets are seen to be in excellent agreement, thereby emphasizing the essential equivalence of lobe functions and cartesian gaussians, at the ver…

Analysis of the transition from normal modes to local modes in a system of two harmonically coupled Morse oscillators

1992

The system consisting of two Morse oscillators coupled via either a potential or a kinetic quadratic term is considered. The corresponding classical equations of motion have been numerically integrated and the initial conditions have been systematically analyzed in the regime of low total excitation energy of the system. Particular attention was paid to the full characterization of an intermediate type of motion, herein called transition mode, which appears at total energy values in between those typical of normal modes and those where local and normal modes coexist. A previously proposed perturbative approach (Jaffe C, Brumer P (1980) J Chem Phys 73:5646) is reanalyzed and compared with th…

PNO-CI and CEPA studies of electron correlation effects

1974

Ab initio calculations of the potential curves of low laying electronic states of OH are performed on the basis of a variational configuration interaction wavefunction (PNO-CI) and the coupled electron pair approximation (CEPA). The latter approach yields a ground state potential curve which deviates from the RKR curve by less than 200 cm−1 in the region from 0.7 to 1.6 A. Calculated ground state constants are as follows (experimental values in parentheses): r e = 0.972 (0.971) A, B e = 18.85 (18.87) cm−1, α e = 0.727 (0.714) cm−1, ω e = 3742 (3739) cm−1, ω e χ e = 85.3 (86.4) cm−1, μ0 = 1.686 (1.66) D, D e = 4.35 (4.63) eV,IP = 12.78 (13.36?) eV, El.Aff. = 1.51 (1.83) eV, v 00(2Π↔2Σ+) = 32…

Location of transition states and stable intermediates by MINIMAX/MINIMI optimization of synchronous transit pathways

1983

The MINIMAX/MINIMI concept for the location of transition states and/or stable intermediates of chemical reactions is introduced, based on the synchronous transit method. According to this strategy, minimization of quadratic synchronous transit path maxima or minima is achieved by constrained exhaustive optimization of internal coordinates. The method and its efficiency are demonstrated for two-dimensional model surfaces as well as for thermally allowed electrocyclic interconversions of cyclopropyl-/allyl-cation and cyclobutene-/butadiene (gauche) within the framework of MNDO-SCF calculations. Thus, in both cases a direct comparison with the exact solution determined by minimization of the …
