The question why low-density lipoprotein (LDL) stranded in the subendothelium of arteries should acquire the proinflammatory properties that initiate and sustain atherogenesis has puzzled researchers for decades. The most popular concept contends that oxidative processes are crucial because oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) produced in vitro has atherogenic properties and small amounts of it are found in atherosclerotic lesions. Abstract Sixty-five avian Chlamydia psittaci isolates collected worldwide, including 27 previously characterized reference strains, were analysed by restriction mapping of the major outer membrane protein gene ( omp1 ) obtained after DMA amplification by PCR. They were compared to 2 ruminant isolates, a feline pneumonitis and a guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis (GPIC) isolate. According to their omp1 restriction patterns, avian strains were heterogeneous in that they exhibited 6 and 4 distinct patterns using Alu I and Mbo II restriction enzymes, respectively, thus defining 7 groups. Background and Purpose— Recent findings suggest a causative role of infections in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The extent of atherosclerosis and the prognosis of patients with atherosclerosis seem to be increased by the number of infections to which an individual has been exposed. In a prospective study, we evaluated the effect of 8 pathogens and the aggregate pathogen burden on the progression of carotid atherosclerosis. Methods— In 504 patients (74.9% men; age, 62.9±10 years), we measured intima-media thickness and prevalence of carotid artery stenosis. Las clamidias son un grupo peculiar de bacterias, cuyo ciclo vital transcurre en parte en el interior de las células. Tienen la propiedad de adherirse a determinados epitelios, en los que pueden acabar produciendo infecciones. Existen tres especies patógenas para el hombre: Chlamydia trachomatis, que produce infecciones fundamentalmente en los epitelios genital y urinario, y C. psittaci y C. pneumoniae, que producen fundamentalmente infecciones respiratorias. A las dos últimas se les clasifica en la actualidad en un género diferente, el de las Chlamydophilas.

Herein, we studied the effects of C. pneumoniae infection and a diet with a low-cholesterol supplement on the development of autoantibodies to mouse Hsp60 and early lipid lesions in the aortic valve of C57BL/6JBom mice.
