Ozone-Based Atomic Layer Deposition of Al2O3 from Dimethylaluminum Chloride and Its Impact on Silicon Surface Passivation

2017

Dimethylaluminum chloride (DMACl) as an aluminum source has shown promising potential to replace more expensive and commonly used trimethylaluminum in the semiconductor industry for atomic layer deposited (ALD) thin films. Here, the Al2O3 DMACl-process is modified by replacing the common ALD oxidant, water, by ozone that offers several benefits including shorter purge time, layer-by-layer growth, and improved film adhesion. It is shown that the introduction of the ozone instead of water increases carbon and chlorine content in the Al2O3, while long ozone pulses increase the amount of interfacial hydrogen at silicon surface. These are found to be beneficial effects regarding the surface pass…

The potential of cirrus clouds for heterogeneous chlorine activation

1996

The ER-2 data from ascents and descents through layers of cirrus clouds are utilized to study the heterogeneous reactions of ClONO 2 with H 2 O, of HOCl and ClONO 2 with HCl, and their potential role for the activation of chlorine in the tropopause regions which could affect ozone there. Lacking measured data for the three chlorine containing molecules their abundances as a function of altitude have been calculated from a 2D model. The aerosol surface data measured by a Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP-300) on the ER-2 were corrected for the expected asphericity of cirrus cloud particles by means of a T-matrix method. The results indicate considerable potential of cirrus clouds f…

Unprecedented layered coordination polymers of dithiolene group 10 metals: Magnetic and electrical properties

2016

One-pot reactions between Ni(ii), Pd(ii) or Pt(ii) salts and 3,6-dichloro-1,2-benzenedithiol (HSC6H2Cl2SH) in KOH medium under argon lead to a series of bis-dithiolene coordination polymers. X-ray analysis shows the presence of a common square planar complex [M(SC6H2Cl2S)2]2- linked to potassium cations forming either a two-dimensional coordination polymer network for {[K2(μ-H2O)2(μ-thf)(thf)2][M(SC6H2Cl2S)2]}n [M = Ni (1) and Pd (2)] or a one-dimensional coordination polymer for {[K2(μ-H2O)2(thf)6][Pt(SC6H2Cl2S)2]}n (3). In 3 the coordination environment of the potassium ions may slightly change leading to the two-dimensional coordination polymer {[K2(μ-H2O)(μ-thf)2][Pt(SC6H2Cl2S)2]}n (4) …

Trends of organochlorine compounds in Finnish inland waters

2001

Caged common lake mussels (Anodonta piscinalis) have been used in the monitoring of organochlorine compounds in pulp and paper mill recipient watercourses of Finland annually from 1984 to 1998. Statistically significant decreasing trends of chlorophenols and chloroguaiacols originating from chlorobleaching were observed in all recipients in parallel with the decreasing discharges from the mills. Metabolites of chlorophenols, chloroanisoles and chloroveratroles had no or slightly increasing trends. Elevated PCB concentrations were measured in four watercourses. In two areas, PCBs were found to be significantly increasing, in two other cases they showed no trend. A mill producing recycled pap…

Immunoreactivity of Roach,Rutilus rutilus,Following Laboratory Exposure to Bleached Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents

1998

Abstract In order to study immunomodulation, controlled laboratory experiments were carried out with roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) exposed to bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME) or spent bleach liquor (SBL) from two pulp and paper mills using elementary chlorine and chlorine dioxide for bleaching. The total number of immunoglobulin-secreting cells (ISC) and the number of specific antibody-secreting cells (ASC) were determined by ELISPOT assay. Exposure to BKME resulted in decreased numbers of ISC in the spleen. To study the capability of response against foreign antigens the fish were immunized with bovine γ-globulin. Exposure to BKME or SBL reduced antigen-specific ASC response in fish. Moreov…

Vertical distribution of AhR-activating compounds in sediments contaminated by modernized pulp and paper industry

2013

Increased ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity is a sensitive biomarker of exposure to the chemicals which activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and induce the cytochrome P450 system, such as many polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Pulp bleaching was one of the main sources of PCDDs and PCDFs until elemental chlorine free (ECF) and total chlorine free bleaching processes since 1990s have remarkably decreased but not completely eliminate discharges of these chemicals. In addition, historically contaminated sediments may act as a source of these persistent contaminants. In this study, the contam…

The impact of baking on chlorinated paraffins: Characterization of C10–C17 chlorinated paraffins in oven-baked pastry products and unprocessed pastry…

2019

Abstract This study presents an HPLC–ESI–Q–TOF method for simultaneous quantification of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs, C10–13) and an additional characterization of medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs, C14–17) in oven-baked pastry products (n = 38) and unprocessed pastry dough material (n = 15). Almost 2 times higher SCCP levels were found in the dough material. ΣSCCP concentrations in products ranged from 0.3 ng g−1 to 23.0 ng g−1 (mean: 6.3 ng g−1), while the results for dough ranged from 5.8 ng g−1 to 22.8 ng g−1 (mean: 12.9 ng g−1). Regardless of the sample matrix, the most abundant CP homologue groups were hepta- and octa-chlorinated undecanes and dodecanes. The avera…

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soils of the Moscow region: Concentrations and small-scale distribution along an urban–rural transect

2006

In soils of the Moscow region, we examined PCB concentrations in bulk samples and aggregate fractions. Topsoils under grassland and forest at five locations along a southeast-bound transect from Moscow and at a northeastern background location (grassland only) were analysed. We collected aggregates1 cm and fractionated them into interior and exterior portions and also analysed the remaining soil without the aggregates1 cm. The concentrations of the sum of 17 PCBs (sigma17PCBs) in 35 bulk soil samples ranged from 3.1 to 42 microg kg(-1). This was 48-61% of the sigma33PCBs determined in 23 selected samples. The congeners 138(+158), 101 and 52 were most abundant. All PCB concentrations and the…
