O-Alkylation of the dinitro calix[4]arene 2, easily available by selective ipso-nitration of the di-cyanomethyl ether 1, with allylbromide (DMF/Cs2CO3) gave tetraethers 3 and 4 with anti- and syn-orientations of the two allyl ether residues. The two possible stereoisomers of 3 in the partial cone and 1,2-alternate conformation exist as an equilibrium mixture which could be quantitatively analysed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of this equilibrium leads to ΔH0 = − 7.6 to −9.7 kJ mol−1 in different solvents (tetrachloroethane, benzene, dimethylsulfoxide). Abstract The adsorption/co-adsorption of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA) and 1-bromo,2-chloroethane (BCA) from the vapour and the liquid phases by zeolite ZSM-5 at ambient temperature is reported, using Dubinin's theory and the recent Myers-Prausnitz-Dubinin (MPD) theory. For adsorption from the liquid phase, the activity coefficients in the adsorbed and the liquid states are the same and no selectivity is observed. This is confirmed by the absence of an excess enthalpy of immersion of ZSM-5 into the mixtures. Objectives: Irritating effects of organic solvents have usually been measured by means of questionnaires. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sensitivity of different methods of detecting subclinical irritating effects. Methods: Twelve healthy, non-smoking students were exposed to 200 ppm and to 20 ppm 1,1,1-trichloroethane in an exposure chamber, using a crossover design. The conductance of tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylboride, picrate, perchlorate, and nitrate has been measured at 25°C in mixtures ofi-butyronitrile with chlorobenzene,o-dichlorobenzene,p-dicholorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, andn-pentanol covering the range of dielectric constants 10≤D≤20. In these mixtures of polar solvents, both association constants and ionic mobilities depend on ion-solvent interaction energies and on free volume in a manner that is specific for each system. This failure of the primitive model (rigid charged spheres in a continuum) is shown to be the consequence of short-range spatial and energetic interactions between ions and adjacent solvent molecules.

Organochlorinated pesticides in sediments from the Lake Albufera of Valencia (Spain).

Bottom sediment samples from 121 sites of the Lake Albufera of Valencia were analyzed. Dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor and op'-DDT were not detected (0.01 ng g(-1)) in 88-93% of the sites. Aldrin and HCB concentration ranges were between0.01 and 0.1 ng g(-1) in 86% and 94% of the sites, respectively. Heptachlor-epoxide and lindane 95% confidence intervals were 0.2-0.5 and 0.06-0.12, respectively. The greatest average concentration corresponds to pp'-DDE, pp'-DDD and pp'-DDT. The sum of six isomers and derivatives of the DDT average concentration reaches 2.1 ng g(-1), as opposed to 2.7 ng g(-1) for the sum of 13 pesticides considered.
