Parameter retrieval and model inversion are key problems in remote sensing and Earth observation. Currently, different approximations exist: a direct, yet costly, inversion of radiative transfer models (RTMs); the statistical inversion with in situ data that often results in problems with extrapolation outside the study area; and the most widely adopted hybrid modeling by which statistical models, mostly nonlinear and non-parametric machine learning algorithms, are applied to invert RTM simulations. The semiempirical PM3 method has been used to calculate fully optimized structures of bacteriochlorophylls a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and h, magnesium−chlorin, and magnesium−bacteriochlorin. Several configuration interaction (CI) methods, the PM3 (5,5) CIS and CISD, ZINDO/S CIS (n,n) with 2 < n <30, and ab initio CIS (5,5)/6-31G* methods, were tested for their predictive power in estimation of spectroscopic properties of bacteriochlorophylls. The ZINDO/S CIS (15,15) method turned out the best results for overall simulation of absorption spectra. The main objective of FLEX is the measurement of vegetation chlorophyll fluorescence (Fs) from space and the exploitation of this signal to better understand the carbon cycle. FLuORescence Imaging Spectrometer (FLORIS) is the main instrument of the FLEX mission concept. ESA's Earth Science Advisory Committee recommended the investigation of the FLEX concept as an in-orbit demonstrator to be flown as a tandem mission with Sentinel-3 (S-3). The Fraunhofer Line Discrimination (FLD) principle is established as a good method for remote sensing of solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence. Some improvements to the method are analysed in order to determine and reduce the sources of error in the estimation of the fluorescence emission. A sensitivity analysis has been performed over simulated data generated from real diurnal cycle measurements.
Effects of 2-month ozone exposure in spinach leaves on photosynthesis, antioxidant systems and lipid peroxidation

The photosynthesis response, antioxidant systems and lipid peroxidation were studied in leaves from spinach plants (Spinacia oleracea L.) in response to ozone fumigation, ambient air and charcoal filtered air treatments. The photosynthetic activity was tested through gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements. Ambient air and ozone fumigation caused a decrease in the photosynthetic rate (25% and 63%, respectively) mainly due to a reduced mesophyll activity, as evidenced by the increased intercellular CO, concentration. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L. cv. Clermont) leaves grown in open-top chambers and exposed to three different concentrations of ozone were measured for gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, antioxidant systems, and lipid peroxidation at the end of growing season. High O-3 concentration reduced F-v/F-m, indicating that the efficiency in the energy conversion of photosystem 2 (PS2) was altered. The rate of non-cyclic electron transport rate and the capacity to reduce the quinone pool were also affected. Chlorophyllins were incorporated into the gelatin film-forming solution and the inhibiting effect of the cast films was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes.
