Physical and chemical changes in minimally processed green asparagus during cold-storage

The purpose of this research is to study effects of an innovative packaging method on the shelf-life of minimally processed green asparagus. The physical-chemical parameters analyzed (weight loss, colour, texture, chlorophyll and citric acid), and monitored by untrained panellists during the cold storage period at 6 degrees C, showed that pairing of a semi-permeable film with an adsorbent material and immersion in ascorbic acid solution were able to extend the shelf-life of green asparagus. Summary In order to obtain information on the nitrogen metabolism of undamaged and damaged spruce ( Picea abies ), investigations were performed in 1985 and 1986 on the activity of glutamine synthetase and on the content of free ammonium and soluble proteins in spruce needles. In addition, the chlorophyll content was determined. Needles from the second needle year and the seventh whorl were used. The investigations were carried out in pair comparison on a 20-year-old spruce plantation and in comparison with damage classes on an 80-year-old spruce plantation. Effects of Kinetin and Different Light Qualities on the Content of Carbohydrates

Summary The effects of kinetin on the content of soluble redueing sugars, starch, soluble proteins and various components of the photosynthetic apparatus were studied with primary leaves of Sinapis alba, which were grown under different light qualities (white, red, blue Jight conditions). It was especially the content of soluble reducing sugars that was most influenced by kinetin. The enhancement of the sugar content was dependent on the duration of application as well as on the concentration of kinetin. A new fluorescence retrieval method is proposed to support ESA's 8th Earth Explorer FLuorescence EXplorer/Sentinel-3 (FLEX-S3) candidate tandem mission. FLEX is the first mission specially dedicated to measure the Sun-Induced vegetation chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) strongly related with the vegetation photosynthetic activity. The major light-harvesting complex (LHC) of the prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata is unique compared to other chlorophyll (Chl) a/b-binding LHC with respect to the primary protein structure and the pigmentation. Although the presence of Chl a, Chl b, a Chl c-type pigment and the xanthophylls neoxanthin, violaxanthin and prasinoxanthin was clearly determined, several carotenoids remained unidentified or were described controversially. We re-analysed the carotenoid composition and identified a new set of xanthophylls present in the LHC: uriolide, micromonol, micromonal and dihydrolutein. Polypeptide sequence of the chlorophyll a/b/c-binding protein of the prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata.

The primary structure of the Chla/b/c-binding protein from Mantoniella squamata is determined. This is the first report that protein sequencing reveals one modified amino acid resulting in a LHCP-specific TFA-cleavage site. The comparison of the sequence of Mantoniella with other Chla/b-and Chla/c-binding proteins shows that the modified amino acid is located in a region which is highly conserved in all these proteins. The alignment also reveals that the LHCP of Mantoniella is related to the Chla/b-binding proteins. Finally, possible Chl-binding regions are discussed.
